Cognitive Authority Collapse

The dissolution of the tacit covenant that knowledge is hard-won and those who have won it have earned the right to be believed—diagnosed by Nietzsche’s structure of the death of God, now unfolding as AI machines answer faster, more comprehensively, and increasingly more accurately than the experts who spent years becoming capable of answering.
For most of modernity, when you wanted to know something, you asked a person who had earned the right to know it—or you became such a person yourself, through years of formation. The doctor’s diagnosis, the craftsman’s eye, the scholar’s command of a field were not databases. They were the visible surface of a long, invisible formation, and the trust a culture placed in them was trust in that formation. The whole edifice of professional authority rested on a tacit covenant: knowledge is hard-won, and those who have won it have earned the right to be believed. That covenant is now being voided. Large language models answer well, improve continuously, and do so without having paid the price the expert paid. The horizon of earned knowledge—the sense that real understanding sits at the end of a long climb—is being wiped away.
