Daniel Bell

The sociologist who identified the axial principle of civilization—the organizing scarce resource around which every institution arranges itself—and who gave us the only framework powerful enough to name what happens when AI automates the knowledge class out of its own commanding position.
Daniel Bell spent his career asking a question that most social scientists of his era preferred to avoid: what holds a society together, and what happens when the logic changes? His answer was the axial principle—the scarce resource around which an era's institutions, hierarchies, and cultural assumptions organize themselves. The pre-industrial axial principle was land. The industrial axial principle was capital. The post-industrial axial principle, which Bell identified with extraordinary precision in his 1973 masterwork The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, was theoretical knowledge: systematic, codified, transmissible through formal education and deployable by anyone with the requisite training. Bell predicted that the knowledge class—the professionals, scientists, engineers, lawyers, and analysts whose primary asset was their command of theoretical knowledge—would become the dominant social stratum of the late twentieth century.
