The Beachhead Strategy

Moore's prescription for crossing the technology chasm—choose one specific pragmatist segment, serve it so completely that it becomes a reference for the next, and resist every temptation to serve everyone before serving anyone.
The beachhead strategy is the operational core of Geoffrey Moore's framework for crossing the technology chasm, and it is counterintuitive enough that most technology companies do not follow it even when they know it. The prescription is to select a single narrow pragmatist segment—not the largest, not the most glamorous, but the one whose whole product gap is narrowest and whose need is most acute—and serve it with a completeness that leaves no room for complaint. Do not build a generic solution for the broadest possible market. Build the specific, integrated, institutionally supported solution that one specific kind of pragmatist actually needs. The beachhead serves two functions: it produces the first crossing of the chasm, generating the reference customers that pragmatists in adjacent segments will trust; and it generates the organizational discipline of depth before breadth, which is the discipline the bowling alley requires.
