Basalla's Three Pillars

The structural foundation of The Evolution of Technology: continuity, novelty, and selection — the three mechanisms through which artifacts evolve, each deliberately anti-heroic, each applicable with uncanny precision to the AI transition.
Basalla's 1988 framework rests on three interlocking claims about how technological change actually operates. Continuity: every artifact descends from a prior artifact through an unbroken chain of modification — no immaculate conceptions anywhere in the record. Novelty: new artifacts arise not from creation ex nihilo but from the recombination and modification of existing elements, constrained by the variation landscape the prior state of the art has established. Selection: economic, cultural, institutional, and sometimes arbitrary forces determine which variations survive, and the surviving artifact is rarely the technically superior one. Together the three pillars constitute an analytical instrument for seeing what the mythology of revolution conceals: that technology evolves through identifiable mechanisms, that the mechanisms are legible, and that the outcomes they produce are amenable to institutional intervention at every stage.
