CONCEPT
Background Relation
The mode in which technology disappears from experience while continuing to shape its conditions — the thermostat, the electrical grid, the algorithmic feed, the AI that has receded into infrastructure.
Background is the least dramatic of
Ihde's four relations and the most consequential. The technology does not present itself to attention, invite interpretation, or sustain encounter. It simply operates — silently, continuously, constitutively —
shaping the environment in which all other experience unfolds. The notation places the technology outside the intentional arc entirely: present in its effects, absent from awareness. Background is the mode in which the
amplification-reduction structure operates most invisibly, because the mediation is no longer experienced as mediation; it is experienced as the way things are. AI's recession into background is the fastest in technological history, and it is the recession most urgently in need of sustained philosophical attention.
In The You On AI Field Guide
Background is the terminal condition of technological integration. Electricity has largely achieved it; most people interact with outlets without noticing them as technologies. The thermostat has achieved it — homeowners feel the temperature, not the device that maintains it. The smartphone has substantially achieved it
