Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s research revealed that some people are predisposed to optimal experience in a way that transcends circumstance—a disposition he called autotelic, from the Greek
auto (self) and
telos (goal). The autotelic individual sets her own challenges rather than waiting for challenges to be assigned. She maintains internal standards of quality rather than relying on external evaluation. She derives satisfaction from the process of engagement rather than from its products. She is curious, persistent, and capable of sustained attention in the absence of external reward. Crucially, the autotelic personality is not a fixed trait but a character structure that develops through repeated experience of genuine flow itself: each flow experience teaches the practitioner, from the inside, that the richest moments of her life were not moments of promotion or recognition but moments of complete absorption in meaningful work.
