Every previous technology of the intellect atrophied the internal faculty it externalized. Writing atrophied the prodigious memory of oral cultures. This is the faculty exercised by the writer at the blank page, the programmer tracing through a bug, the scientist wrestling a vague observation into a precise hypothesis. It is the labor of giving structure to thought without external assistance, and it has been, until now, irreducibly solitary.
