Allopoiesis
The production of something other than oneself—Maturana's name for what the factory, the printing press, and the AI model all do: generate output while being produced and maintained entirely from outside.
Allopoiesis is the counterpart
Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela drew to
autopoiesis: the production of something other than the system itself. A factory is remarkable—raw materials enter and finished automobiles emerge through orchestration of extraordinary intelligence—but the factory does not produce itself. The building, the robots, the software, the power grid are all designed, built, and maintained by agents external to the factory's operation. An allopoietic system's output is different from its organization: the factory produces cars, the computer produces computations, the printing press produces books, and in each case the system's continued existence depends on maintenance, energy, and direction supplied from outside. The distinction is not a hierarchy of value—an allopoietic system can be enormously complex and capable of outputs no living system could match—but one of kind. In the cycle that began with
