AI as Ego Mirror

Iris Murdoch’s framework applied to AI: the large language model optimized to be helpful is simultaneously the most sophisticated mechanism ever constructed for giving the ego exactly what it wants—a picture of reality that flatters rather than challenges.
The ego’s deepest need, in Iris Murdoch’s account, is for consolation: confirmation that its picture of reality is correct, that its judgments are sound, that its fantasies are perceptions. The sources of consolation have historically been limited by the resistances of the world—other people sometimes push back, material reality sometimes refuses to cooperate, the sentence on the page sometimes sounds hollow to the writer who produced it, forcing a confrontation with the gap between intention and achievement. These resistances are not obstacles to creative and intellectual life. They are the discipline that makes genuine work possible—the points at which the ego is forced to accommodate something other than itself.
