Adoption Curve Compression
The progressive shortening of the interval between a technology's introduction and its mass adoption — from 75 years for the telephone to two months for ChatGPT — and the step function AI represents in the pattern.
Every general-purpose technology follows an S-curve. What has changed across technology waves is not the shape but the timescale: each successive technology reaches mass adoption faster than the last. The telephone required 75 years to reach 50 million users; radio 38; television 13; the internet 4; ChatGPT achieved 100 million monthly active users in two months. When the curves are stacked against each other, the visual argument is immediate — each acceleration is itself accelerating. Meeker's 2025 report identifies the mechanism: AI is a
compounder on infrastructure that prior technology waves built. Unlike each earlier technology, which required new distribution channels, AI inherited the global internet, the mobile ecosystem, and cloud infrastructure simultaneously. The compression is not gradual refinement of prior patterns. It is a step function — a discontinuity that separates AI from every technology that preceded it.
