Then, and only then, bring the garbage to the machine. Let Claude polish what you have discovered. Let the second-order tool operate on first-order material.
The order matters. Elbow insisted on it throughout his career, and the insistence was not arbitrary. When second-order processing operates on first-order material, the result is genuine refinement — the writer's own thinking, clarified and strengthened by critical shaping. When second-order processing operates on nothing — when the machine generates the content and the writer merely reviews it — the result is what Segal caught himself almost keeping: a smooth, empty passage that sounds like someone thinking without anyone having thought.
The dangerous method, then, is not AI itself. The dangerous method is AI used as a substitute for first-order process rather than a supplement to it. The method is dangerous precisely because it works — the output is good, the deadlines are met, the client is satisfied, the grade is earned — and the cost is invisible until months or years later, when the writer discovers that her capacity for genuine thought has atrophied because she stopped exercising it. Elbow understood this danger before the machine existed, because the danger was never about the machine. It was about the human tendency to prefer the comfortable over the generative, the safe over the risky, the smooth over the rough. Elbow's framework predicts this variation with precision. The passages with voice are the passages where first-order process occurred — where Segal wrestled with material that resisted him, where the writing was an act of discovery rather than an act of assembly. The passages without voice are the passages where second-order product dominated — where the machine provided the structure, the connections, the polish, and the writer's role was evaluative rather than generative.
