The sentence that undid me was one I wrote myself.
In You On AI, I described the imagination-to-artifact ratio — the distance between a human idea and its realization — and celebrated the moment that distance collapsed to the width of a conversation. I meant it. I still mean it. The collapse is real, and it is extraordinary, and it has changed what I can build in ways I could not have imagined five years ago.
But Maryanne Wolf asked a question I had not thought to ask, and the question rearranged everything.
