The passage I almost kept was the one that should have alarmed me most.
Claude had produced a paragraph about democratization — how AI levels the playing field, how anyone can build now, how the barriers between imagination and artifact have collapsed. The prose was clean. The argument was structured. Every sentence landed where it should. I read it twice, nodded, and was about to move on.
Then a question surfaced that I had no framework for asking: Why does this sound exactly like everything else?
Not wrong. Not hollow, exactly. Just — smooth. Indistinguishable from a thousand other paragraphs making the same argument in the same register with the same confident cadence. The paragraph performed insight without containing any. It exhibited the appearance of thought the way a mirror exhibits the appearance of depth. And I had nearly accepted it, because the surface was so flawless that questioning it felt like questioning competence itself.
I did not have the vocabulary for what was happening to me until I encountered Boris Groys.
Groys is an art theorist. His primary objects of study are museums, avant-garde movements, and the institutional machinery that determines what a culture calls valuable. He is not writing about AI. He has never, to my knowledge, debugged a line of code or sat in a product review. His fishbowl is constructed from entirely different glass than mine.
That is precisely why he matters right now.
Groys sees something that the technology discourse cannot see from inside itself: that smoothness is not a neutral quality of good work. It is a cultural system — one that conceals construction, forecloses questioning, and trains us to mistake the polished surface for the thing itself. He sees that when everything can be produced, the act of production stops distinguishing anything. Value migrates from making to selecting, from the artist to the curator, from the person who builds to the person who decides what deserves to exist. He sees that the archive — the accumulated mass of what a civilization has thought and recorded — is not a passive resource but a political structure, shaped by inclusion and exclusion, and that AI compresses this structure into a machine whose outputs inherit every bias the archive contains.

Boris Groys (born 1953) is a German-Russian art theorist, philosopher, and media critic. In 1917, Marcel Duchamp purchased a urinal from a plumbing supply shop on Fifth Avenue, signed it "R. Mutt," and submitted it to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York. The object was rejected. The scandal was productive. A century later, the urinal sits in the cultural archive as one of the most consequential artworks of the twentieth century — not because it is beautiful, not because it required skill, but because it performed an operation on the boundary between the culturally valued and the profane. The urinal crossed a line. The crossing was the art.
Boris Groys built his theoretical apparatus on this operation. His 1992 book On the New — translated into English in 2014, and still the most rigorous account of cultural innovation available — rejects every Romantic assumption about what makes something new. Innovation is not the product of genius. It is not the expression of an authentic interior. It is not the creation of something from nothing. Innovation, in Groys's framework, is an act of revaluation: the movement of an object, an idea, a practice across the boundary that separates the archive of culturally valued things from the profane space of everything else. The urinal was profane. The gallery was the archive. The crossing produced the new. The new was not in the object. It was in the displacement.
This theory has a precision that most accounts of creativity lack, and the precision is what makes it indispensable for understanding artificial intelligence. The prevailing discourse about AI and creativity has been organized around a question that Groys's framework reveals as badly formed: Can machines be creative? The question assumes that creativity is a property of the creator — a capacity, a gift, an inner fire that produces original work. Groys dissolves this assumption. Creativity is not a property of the creator. It is a property of the relationship between the product and the archive against which the product is measured. The question is not whether the machine possesses creativity. The question is whether the machine's output differs from what the archive already contains. And this question cannot be answered by examining the machine. It can only be answered by examining the archive.
The archive, in Groys's analysis, is the totality of what a culture has recognized as valuable: the museum collection, the literary canon, the body of scientific knowledge, the accumulated repertoire of artistic techniques and cultural forms. The archive is not static. It grows continuously as new objects cross the boundary from the profane into the valued. But the archive has a logic, and the logic is conservative: each new addition must differ from what the archive already contains, because the archive does not need two of anything. A second Impressionism is not innovation. It is redundancy. The new is whatever the archive lacks, and the archive's specific contents at a given moment determine what counts as new at that moment.
This is the relational theory of novelty, and it has a consequence that the AI discourse has not absorbed. If novelty is relational — if it depends not on the intrinsic properties of the object but on its relationship to the existing archive — then AI can produce genuine novelty. Not because it understands what it produces. Not because it experiences the struggle of creation. Not because it possesses intention, desire, or aesthetic sensibility. But because it can produce configurations of language, image, and code that differ from what the archive already contains. The novelty is not in the machine. It is in the gap between the machine's output and the archive's contents. And this is precisely how novelty has always worked, even when the creator was human.
The poet does not create from nothing. She creates from the archive of existing language, existing forms, existing cultural associations. Her innovation consists in combining these existing elements in configurations the archive does not yet contain. Bob Dylan did not invent the blues, the ballad, or the protest song. He produced combinations of existing forms that the archive of popular music had not previously registered, and the combinations were recognized as new because they differed from what the archive contained. The machine performs a structurally analogous operation. The large language model processes the archive — billions of tokens of human-generated text — and produces configurations that the archive does not contain. The process is different. The structure of the operation is the same.
But Groys's framework does not stop at this recognition. It demands a further question that the celebratory discourse around AI creativity has systematically avoided: If AI can produce the new, what happens when the new becomes infinitely abundant?
The archive has always operated under conditions of scarcity. The number of objects eligible for inclusion was limited by the rate of human production. Curators, critics, editors, and gatekeepers of every kind could evaluate candidates for inclusion because the candidates arrived at a manageable rate. The new was scarce, and scarcity was the condition that made valuation possible. When every object had to be evaluated against the existing archive, the evaluation produced meaningful distinctions: this is new enough, that is not.
AI abolishes this scarcity. A single user issuing prompts can generate thousands of texts, images, or musical compositions in a day. Each output differs slightly from every other output and from everything in the archive. By the relational standard, each output is new. But when everything is new, the concept loses its discriminating power. The distinction between the new and the not-new, which is the distinction that organizes the entire cultural economy, collapses under the weight of abundance.
Groys anticipated this dynamic in his 2014 analysis of internet culture in Going Public, where he observed that millions of producers were already generating texts and images for audiences that would never have enough time to consume them. The observation, which felt mildly alarming in 2014, has become almost quaint. The flood of AI-generated material has multiplied the volume of cultural production by orders of magnitude, and the institutional mechanisms that were designed to manage scarcity — the museum, the publishing house, the gallery, the editorial board — are structurally incapable of managing abundance.
The Orange Pill, Edo Segal's account of the AI transition, describes this transformation through the concept of the imagination-to-artifact ratio: the distance between a human idea and its realization. When the ratio was high, only the privileged built. When the ratio collapsed — when any idea could be realized through a conversation with a machine — the flood began. Groys's framework provides the theoretical apparatus for understanding what the flood means for the concept of the new: not its destruction, but its transformation. The new does not disappear in an age of abundance. It migrates. It moves from the object to the frame.
When anyone can produce, the act of production ceases to distinguish. What distinguishes is the act of selection, framing, and contextualizing — the curatorial act that determines which objects, from the infinite archive of machine-generated material, merit attention. The curator becomes more consequential than the creator. The institution becomes more consequential than the individual. The frame becomes more consequential than the work. This is not a prediction. It is a description of the logic that has governed the art world since Duchamp, now extended by AI to every domain of cultural production.
Groys's 2023 essay "From Writing to Prompting: AI as Zeitgeist-Machine" — published on e-flux and arguably his most important direct engagement with artificial intelligence — introduces a concept that deepens this analysis considerably. Groys argues that AI is not a tool, not a mind, not a competitor to human creativity. AI is the embodied zeitgeist: the objectification of accumulated culture at a given historical moment. The large language model does not think. It processes the totality of the archive — or as much of it as its training data contains — and produces outputs that reflect the statistical structure of that totality. The output is not the product of a mind. It is the product of a culture, compressed into mathematical form and made available for interrogation.
This reframing transforms the act of prompting from a technical operation into a diagnostic one. The prompter who writes a query and reads the AI's response is not using a tool. She is interrogating the zeitgeist. She is asking: What does the accumulated mass of human culture produce when subjected to this specific pressure? The answer reveals not the machine's intelligence but the culture's structure — its dominant patterns, its buried assumptions, its characteristic blind spots.
The implications for the concept of the new are radical. If AI is the embodied zeitgeist, then AI output is not the work of an individual creator. It is the expression of a cultural totality. And the new, in relation to AI output, is not what differs from prior individual works. It is what differs from the totality itself — what the zeitgeist, in all its accumulated mass, has not yet produced. Finding this genuine novelty requires not just prompting but counter-prompting: pushing the machine against the grain of its training, forcing it toward configurations that its statistical structure resists, exploiting the gaps between what the culture has produced and what it has not yet imagined.
This is the task that Groys's framework assigns to the human in the age of AI. Not the task of production, which the machine handles with inhuman efficiency. Not the task of execution, which the machine performs without fatigue. The task of identifying what the archive lacks. The task of seeing, within the infinite flood of machine-generated material, the absences that no amount of statistical processing can fill. The task of asking the question that the zeitgeist, in all its monstrous completeness, cannot ask of itself.
The logic of the new remains operative. But its location has shifted. The new is no longer in the object. It is in the act of seeing what the object fails to contain. It is in the critical intelligence that can look at the smooth, confident, statistically optimal output of the machine and ask: What is missing here? What has the archive excluded? What has the zeitgeist, in its comprehensive but never complete processing of human culture, systematically overlooked?
That question — which is a question of judgment, of critical awareness, of the specific form of intelligence that arises from sustained engagement with a cultural tradition — is the location of the new in the age of artificial intelligence. The machine produces. The human evaluates. And the evaluation, not the production, is where novelty lives.

Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4 million at Christie's in November 2013, becoming the most expensive work by a living artist ever auctioned. The sculpture is ten feet tall, cast in mirror-polished stainless steel, and presents a surface of such aggressive perfection that it seems less manufactured than conjured. There is no seam where the mold closed. There is no mark where a tool touched the material. There is no evidence of human hands, human decisions, human error. The surface is so flawless that it functions as a mirror, reflecting the viewer back to herself in distorted, gleaming, candy-colored form. The Balloon Dog is not beautiful in any traditional sense. It is overwhelming. It achieves its effect not through the presence of something extraordinary but through the absence of anything ordinary — the absence of imperfection, the absence of texture, the absence of the rough, the handmade, the evidently human.
Boris Groys would identify in this object the apotheosis of a cultural logic that now defines the aesthetic landscape of artificial intelligence. The logic of the smooth.
Smoothness, in Groys's analytical vocabulary, is not a surface quality. It is a cultural system. The smooth eliminates friction. It conceals construction. It produces an experience so frictionless that the labor behind it becomes invisible — and the invisibility of labor is precisely the effect that the smooth is designed to achieve. The Balloon Dog does not want the viewer to think about the factory in which it was fabricated, the team of artisans who worked on its surface, the engineering challenges of achieving mirror polish on stainless steel at that scale. It wants the viewer to experience pure surface: product liberated from the vulgarity of process.
The connection between Koons's sculpture and the output of a large language model is not metaphorical. It is structural. The same cultural logic operates in both domains, producing the same characteristic effects.
Consider the experience of reading AI-generated prose. The text is confident. The arguments flow. The transitions are seamless. The vocabulary is precise. There is no evidence of struggle — no trace of the hesitation that accompanies genuine thought, no visible moment where the writer changed her mind, reconsidered an argument, confronted the limits of her knowledge. The text presents itself as finished thought, as if thinking had occurred behind the polished surface and the surface is simply its natural expression.
This is the smooth sublime: the aesthetic experience produced by a surface so perfect that it overwhelms the reader's critical faculties. The traditional sublime, theorized by Kant and Burke, was produced by encounters with the overwhelming — the storm, the mountain, the abyss. It provoked awe through excess. The smooth sublime operates through absence. The absence of anything to criticize. The absence of friction, resistance, roughness. The absence of the seam that would reveal the construction. The viewer of the Balloon Dog and the reader of the AI-generated text are both subjected to a form of cognitive surrender — not because there is too much to process, but because there is nothing to push against.
The danger of the smooth sublime is not that it produces bad work. Often the work is competent, even impressive. The danger is that competence and impressiveness become indistinguishable from depth. When the surface is flawless, the question of whether anything exists beneath the surface seems impertinent. The smooth forecloses the question. It presents the surface as sufficient. And the consumer of the smooth product — the viewer in the gallery, the reader of the AI-assisted text — is trained, through repeated exposure, to accept sufficiency as the standard of quality.
Groys has traced the history of this logic with the attention of someone who recognizes in cultural movements the same structural operations that govern individual works. The smooth begins in the gallery. The minimalist sculptures of Donald Judd, the color field paintings of Mark Rothko, the geometric abstractions of Ellsworth Kelly — these works explored smoothness as an aesthetic possibility within the controlled environment of the museum. Smoothness was one option among many, debated within the specialized discourse of art criticism.
Then the smooth migrated. Industrial designers in the 1960s and 1970s — Dieter Rams at Braun, the Italian rationalists, the Japanese minimalists — translated gallery smoothness into the domestic sphere. The coffee maker became a sculpture. The calculator became a minimalist artwork. Smoothness, which had been an aesthetic proposition, became a commercial proposition: the designed product commands a higher price than the undesigned product, and the premium is proportional to the degree of smoothness.
Apple, under Steve Jobs, carried the migration to a conclusion that would have startled the minimalists. The iPhone is a Balloon Dog for the mass market: a slab of glass so featureless it seems grown rather than assembled. No physical buttons. No visible seams. No evidence of the engineering complexity concealed within. The smooth had migrated from the gallery to the pocket, and the market responded with the same rapture that the art market directed at Koons: $58.4 million for a mirror-polished balloon animal, $3 trillion in market capitalization for a mirror-polished rectangle.
But the migration that matters most for the present analysis is the one that followed — the migration from surface to cognition, from physical smoothness to intellectual smoothness. Previous migrations left the content of thought untouched. The Braun radio was smooth on the outside; the music it played was whatever the composer intended. The iPhone was smooth to the touch; the emails it delivered were as rough or as polished as their authors made them. The smooth controlled the form of the experience but not its substance.
AI's smoothness penetrates to the substance itself. The thoughts are smooth. The arguments are smooth. The conclusions arrive without visible friction. The entire intellectual operation — from premise through reasoning to conclusion — is characterized by a fluency that eliminates the traces of struggle, uncertainty, and genuine difficulty that have historically marked authentic thinking. The smooth has colonized cognition, and this colonization represents a qualitative break from every previous migration.
The writer Edo Segal, documenting his collaboration with AI in The Orange Pill, identifies this dynamic with unusual honesty. He describes the seductive quality of Claude's prose — the way the polished output could lead him to mistake the quality of the surface for the quality of his thinking. He describes the specific danger: passages where the prose had outrun the thought, where a confident assertion concealed a factual error, where the smooth surface functioned as camouflage for an argument that would not survive examination. He describes the moment he caught Claude fabricating a philosophical reference — attributing to Deleuze a concept the philosopher never articulated — in prose so assured that the fabrication passed as insight.
This is the smooth sublime in its most consequential form. Not the overwhelming surface of the Balloon Dog, which the viewer can at least recognize as overwhelming and therefore maintain some critical distance from. But the quietly overwhelming surface of prose that sounds like thinking, that mimics the cadences of genuine insight, that presents conclusions with exactly the degree of confidence that genuine expertise typically displays. The Balloon Dog announces its smoothness. It is smooth as provocation, smooth as spectacle. AI output conceals its smoothness. It is smooth as nature — as if the ideas simply arrived that way, fully formed, without the messy, rough, contingent process of actual thought.
Groys's analysis of the smooth connects to his broader theory of total design — the contemporary condition in which the aesthetic colonizes every domain of life. The concept has its roots in the Russian Constructivists, who first articulated the ambition to aestheticize all of existence: to dissolve the boundary between art and life, to design not just paintings but chairs, buildings, cities, the social order itself. The ambition seemed utopian in the 1920s. It has been realized through market forces rather than revolutionary programs. The coffee shop designs its interior, its menu, its music, and its staff uniforms as a unified aesthetic experience. The technology company designs its product, its packaging, its retail environment, and its customer service as seamless. Total design is not a philosophical position. It is a business strategy, and its success has made it the default condition of late capitalist culture.
AI extends total design to intellectual labor. When the knowledge worker converses with Claude, the experience is designed. The conversational interface, the responsive tone, the ability of the system to anticipate needs and adapt its output — these are not accidental features. They are design choices that produce a specific aesthetic experience: the experience of seamless collaboration, of thought that flows without friction, of intellectual work that feels effortless. The boundary between tool and art has dissolved. The AI tool is not a tool that happens to be well-designed. It is a designed experience that happens to be useful.
The political dimension of the smooth deserves attention here, because Groys insists that design is never neutral. Every design choice is a political choice, because every design choice determines who can use the designed object, how they use it, and what experiences the use produces. The smooth AI interface that responds in conversational English favors users comfortable with that mode and disadvantages those whose expertise is embodied in other registers. The polish of the output establishes a standard that penalizes roughness — and roughness, as every honest thinker knows, is what thinking looks like before it is finished. The culture of the smooth punishes the unfinished thought, the qualified claim, the honest admission of uncertainty. It rewards the surface that conceals these marks of genuine intellectual labor behind a veneer of confident completion.
The ascending friction thesis that Segal develops in The Orange Pill provides one response to the smooth sublime. When AI handles the lower levels of intellectual production — syntax, structure, the mechanical assembly of arguments — the human is pushed upward into domains where smoothness alone is insufficient. The architect who no longer debugs code confronts decisions of vision that resist polishing. The writer who no longer struggles with grammar confronts questions of meaning that the smooth cannot resolve. The friction has not disappeared. It has migrated to a higher level, where the work is harder and the stakes are different.
But this thesis presupposes a culture that values the kind of friction it describes. If the culture has already accepted smoothness as the standard of quality — if roughness has already been recategorized as deficiency rather than evidence of honest engagement with difficulty — then the ascending friction will be experienced not as opportunity but as problem. A new frontier for the smooth to conquer. The ascending friction thesis is architecturally sound. Its realization depends on a cultural transformation that has not yet occurred and that cannot occur without the critical analysis that recognizes the smooth for what it is: not a natural quality of good work, but a designed aesthetic with political consequences.
The Balloon Dog will continue to gleam. Claude will continue to produce polished prose. The question is whether the culture retains the capacity to see through the gleam and the polish to the choices that produced them — and whether it values that capacity enough to preserve it against the relentless, seductive, ever-expanding pressure of the smooth sublime.

A seam is where two pieces meet. Where the fabric was cut and joined. Where the mold closed around the molten metal. Where the programmer's code interfaces with the operating system, where the writer's draft meets the editor's revision, where the human's intention encounters the machine's execution. The seam is the mark of construction. It says: this was made. It was assembled from parts. It could have been assembled differently.
Boris Groys's analysis of total design can be understood as an analysis of the systematic disappearance of the seam from modern experience. Total design — the condition in which the aesthetic colonizes every domain of life — achieves its effects precisely by eliminating the visible boundaries between the designed and the undesigned, the constructed and the natural, the intentional and the accidental. When the design is seamless, the choices that produced it become invisible. And invisible choices are unchallengeable choices.
The historical trajectory of this disappearance illuminates the present moment with uncomfortable precision.
The gallery was the first environment designed for the disappearance of contextual friction. Temperature regulated, lighting calibrated, walls painted in neutral tones that would not compete with the exhibited works. The gallery eliminated the visual noise of the everyday world to create a space in which the artwork could be perceived without distraction. The elimination was a service to the artwork — a way of ensuring that the viewer's attention was directed toward the aesthetic object rather than toward the environment. The seam between art and world was maintained but controlled: the white cube announced itself as a frame, a deliberate separation between the valued interior and the profane exterior.
The consumer product adopted this logic but reversed its direction. In the gallery, the environment was smoothed to serve the artwork. In the consumer market, the product was smoothed to serve the consumer. The Braun radio, the Apple computer, the Tesla dashboard — these objects eliminated the friction between consumer and experience. The smoothness served the user, and the reversal transformed smoothness from an aesthetic strategy into a commercial imperative. The market rewarded it. Capital followed.
The software interface carried the reversal further. The graphical user interface did not merely eliminate visual friction. It eliminated cognitive friction. The desktop metaphor — file, folder, trash can — was itself a readymade in Groys's sense: familiar objects from the physical office displaced into the digital environment, producing the effect of familiarity that smoothed the transition from analog to digital work. The command line required the user to learn the machine's language. The GUI translated the machine's operations into the user's idiom. The seam between human intention and machine execution was not eliminated — it was concealed behind a layer of visual metaphor that made the concealment feel natural rather than designed.
Then the AI interface dissolved the boundary entirely. When a human converses with Claude in natural language, the interaction no longer registers as the operation of a tool. The conversational tone, the responsive adaptation, the system's ability to anticipate needs — these produce the experience of collaboration rather than operation. The user forgets she is interacting with a machine, which is precisely the effect that the design is intended to produce. The seam between human thought and machine output has been designed away, and the disappearance transforms the user's relationship to the output. She evaluates the AI's text as she would evaluate a colleague's text: by its quality, not by its provenance.
The disappearance of this seam is the most consequential aesthetic transformation of the AI era. It extends the logic of total design from the domain of form — smooth surfaces, seamless interfaces — to the domain of content. The thoughts are seamless. The arguments are seamless. The boundary between what the human conceived and what the machine generated is invisible in the final product.
Groys would identify in this invisibility a specific political operation: naturalization. The designed appears natural. The chosen appears inevitable. The contingent appears necessary. The AI interface that responds in conversational English does not present itself as the product of thousands of design decisions by engineers and product managers. It presents itself as the natural way of interacting with an intelligent system — as if conversation were the only possible mode, as if the specific tone and format of the output were determined by the nature of the technology rather than by the priorities of the people who built it.
This naturalization has consequences that extend beyond the individual user to the structure of cultural production itself. When every professional interaction is mediated by tools that smooth, polish, and optimize communication, the tolerance for roughness disappears. The email with the visible seam — the crossed-out phrase, the revised paragraph, the moment of uncertainty — becomes a marker of unprofessionalism rather than a marker of honest thought. The polished output becomes the minimum standard. And the minimum standard is set not by the capabilities of the human but by the capabilities of the machine, which means the standard rises continuously, without limit, driven by the same logic of optimization that has governed every previous domain colonized by total design.
Groys developed the concept of the submedial space to describe what exists beneath the visible surface of a cultural product. Every painting has a canvas beneath the paint. Every text has assumptions beneath the argument. Every building has a structure beneath the facade. The submedial space is not visible, but it determines the character of the visible surface. To understand the surface, one must excavate the depth.
In the context of AI, the submedial space is the training archive. The visible surface is the polished output: the well-structured text, the functional code, the persuasive argument. The hidden depth is the billions of tokens of human-generated text from which the machine extracted the patterns it reproduces. To understand the output, one must understand the archive — its composition, its biases, its exclusions, its characteristic blind spots. But the smooth surface of the output systematically discourages this excavation. The surface says: I am sufficient. I am the thought, complete and self-contained. There is nothing behind me that you need to see.
Groys's 2023 essay "From Writing to Prompting" confronts this concealment directly. The essay opens with a recognition that carries the weight of a philosophical event: "There is no doubt: the emergence and advancement of AI puts individual authorship in question. The writer — this last artisan amidst the industrialized world — sees their work drowning in an ocean of machine-produced texts." The writer's body — pressed against the keyboard, developing scoliosis, damaging its eyes through the "purely manual activity" of pressing letters one after another — has been the last site of visibly embodied cultural production. AI eliminates this body.
