The lineage was the thing I had never bothered to trace.

I built my career on the assumption that what mattered was what came next. The next interface. The next platform. The next capability threshold. When Claude Code crossed that threshold in December 2025, I experienced it the way everyone around me experienced it — as a rupture. Before and after. Old world and new. I wrote about it that way in *You On AI*. Phase transition. Water becoming ice.

George Basalla would have told me I was wrong about the mechanism, even if I was right about the magnitude.

Basalla was a historian of technology who spent his career making one argument with the stubbornness of a man who knew the evidence was on his side:
