The cell that changed my mind was not a brain cell.

I was deep into the research for this book, reading about Francisco Varela's work on the immune system, when a distinction hit me so hard I had to close the laptop and walk around the block. The immune system — two trillion cells, no central command, no brain — *knows* the body. It distinguishes self from non-self, remembers past threats, adapts to new ones. It performs cognition without consciousness. And it does this because it produces itself. The knowing and the self-making are the same process.
