I did not know it at the time. I had never read Frederick Winslow Taylor. I had never heard the phrase "scientific management" used in a sentence that was not a punchline. But the thing I handed to my engineer — the decomposed task, the acceptance criteria, the estimated hours, the implicit message that his job was to execute what I had designed — was the same artifact that Taylor handed to Henry Noll at Bethlehem Steel in 1899. Different language. Different century. Identical logic.

That recognition hit me midway through writing this book, and it rearranged something I thought was settled.
