The sentence that stopped me was one nobody finished.
Francis Fukuyama, in a July 2025 interview, started to say something about how social institutions have always adapted to new technology. Then he said "but." And then silence. The thought trailed off. The most important word in the sentence was the one that never arrived.
I have been sitting with that silence for months.
In You On AI, I built an argument around amplification. AI amplifies whatever you feed it. The question is whether you are worth amplifying. I believe that. I still believe it. But Fukuyama's framework exposed a blind spot in my own thinking that I cannot ignore and that you should not either.
