Not the performance. The performance was excellent. I hated the way it felt. The transitions between states were abrupt. The visual feedback when a user approached was technically correct but emotionally dead. The typography on the display communicated nothing except that someone had picked a default. The whole thing worked perfectly and meant nothing.

I spent two days with Claude redesigning the experience layer — the animations, the visual language, the micro-interactions that tell a user this thing was made by people who care about you. My engineering team thought I was wasting time. The spec was met. The deadline was real. Why was I fussing with how the screen breathed when the user walked away?

Because that breathing was the product. Everything else was plumbing.

I did not have the vocabulary for this conviction until I encountered Virginia Postrel. Chapter 2: Look and Feel as Economic Foundation

A stranger from another planet, arriving on Earth in 2025 and studying human purchasing behavior with the detachment of a field researcher, would be baffled by coffee.

The substance itself is unremarkable. Roasted seeds of a tropical shrub, ground and steeped in hot water, producing a bitter liquid with mild stimulant properties. The functional specification is simple: deliver caffeine to the bloodstream. A gas station dispenser accomplishes this for a dollar. A home drip machine accomplishes it for pennies.

And yet, across every major city on the planet, millions of human beings pay five, six, seven dollars for the same functional outcome, delivered in a paper cup from a counter in a room that has been carefully designed to look and sound and smell a certain way. The chair is a specific height. The lighting is warm but not dim. The music is present but not intrusive. The barista writes your name on the cup, which serves no functional purpose — you already know your name — but transforms the transaction from commodity exchange into something that feels, however faintly, like recognition.

The alien anthropologist would record that Starbucks is not a coffee company. It is an aesthetic experience company that uses coffee as its medium. The product is not the caffeine. The product is the feeling of being in a certain kind of space, holding a certain kind of object, participating in a certain kind of ritual. The five-dollar premium is the price of that feeling.

Virginia Postrel would not be baffled. She would say this is the most natural thing in the world — the logical expression of a species that has satisfied its functional needs and is now purchasing aesthetic satisfaction with the same economic rationality it once applied to bread and shelter.

Postrel's central empirical claim, developed across hundreds of examples in The Substance of Style, is that look and feel are not additions to economic value. They are constitutive of economic value. The industrial design was clean in a way that suggested the engineers had thought about not just what the device should do but what it should mean to hold it. Every aesthetic choice — the rounded corners, the single home button, the weight distribution, the typeface — communicated a set of values: simplicity, elegance, care, the conviction that technology should adapt to human beings rather than the reverse.

The market responded with a clarity that no focus group could have predicted. Within six years, the iPhone had obliterated the competition. Not because it functioned better — for years, it functioned worse on several technical dimensions — but because it felt better. The aesthetic experience was so superior that consumers were willing to accept functional compromises in exchange for it. They paid a premium for a phone that looked and felt like an artifact made by people who cared.

Postrel's framework reveals this as rational economic behavior, not irrational consumer sentiment. The consumer who pays more for the iPhone is not being manipulated by marketing. She is purchasing a genuine good — aesthetic satisfaction — that the competing products do not provide. The satisfaction is real. The value is real. And the market's response was, in retrospect, predictable from Postrel's framework: function was no longer enough. When every product on the shelf works, the consumer stops comparing function and starts comparing feeling. The interface that communicates care captures attention. The design that expresses a coherent aesthetic identity builds loyalty. The experience that satisfies the cave painter's ancient demand — the demand for things to look and feel right — commands the premium.

In the months following the AI coding revolution, the most successful AI-generated products were not the ones with the most sophisticated functionality. They were the ones whose creators had brought aesthetic sensibility to the direction of the AI tool. They were the products where someone had specified not just what the thing should do but what it should feel like — what the typography should communicate, how the transitions should move, what the overall experience should mean to the person using it.

The someone in question is the human being with taste. Not taste in the subjective, unaccountable sense of personal preference — I like blue, you like green — but taste in the sense Postrel's work implies: the developed capacity to evaluate aesthetic quality, to distinguish the excellent from the adequate, to perceive the difference between a product that was designed with care and one that was assembled from defaults.

This capacity is unevenly distributed. It develops through sustained exposure to quality — years of using well-designed products, inhabiting well-designed spaces, consuming well-made cultural objects. The senior product designer who can look at an interface and feel, before articulating, that something is wrong — the spacing is off, the hierarchy is unclear, the color palette communicates anxiety rather than confidence — possesses this capacity in the same way that Segal's senior engineer feels that a codebase is wrong before she can explain why. Both are standing on thousands of hours of accumulated experience, deposited layer by layer through attention and practice.

The economic implications are profound and uncomfortable. When execution was scarce, the hierarchy of economic value ran from those who could build to those who could merely describe. The engineer commanded the premium. The designer supported the engineer. The person who could specify what a product should feel like was, in the compensation hierarchy of most technology companies, valued less than the person who could make the product work.

AI inverted this hierarchy with a speed that caught most organizations unprepared. When any member of the team could produce functional code through conversation with an AI tool, the capacity to write code was no longer the scarce resource. The scarce resource was the capacity to direct the code toward something worth building — and, crucially, toward something that would feel worth using. The creative director, the design lead, the person whose contribution had been classified as a support function, suddenly occupied the position of highest leverage.

Segal describes this inversion at Napster, where engineers who had spent years in narrow technical silos began reaching across disciplines — backend engineers building interfaces, designers writing features, the boundaries between roles dissolving as the translation cost between domains collapsed. What he is describing, in Postrel's framework, is the revelation of what had always been true: the aesthetic dimension was always the durable layer of value. It was just hidden beneath the mechanical difficulty of execution.

The Dyson vacuum cleaner illustrates the point from a different angle. James Dyson's engineering innovation — the cyclone separation technology that eliminated the need for bags — was genuinely novel. But the vacuum that resulted from that innovation looked like nothing else on the market. It was transparent where others were opaque. It was curvaceous where others were boxy. It came in colors — purple, yellow, silver — that communicated something about the relationship between the user and the act of cleaning: this is not drudgery. This is technology. This is design.

The Dyson premium — the willingness of consumers to pay two, three, four times the price of a functionally comparable vacuum — was partly an engineering premium. But engineering premiums erode as competitors replicate the technology. The aesthetic premium persisted, because the aesthetic was harder to replicate than the engineering. Competitors could reverse-engineer the cyclone. They could not reverse-engineer the feeling of using a Dyson — the specific aesthetic signature that communicated innovation, care, and a refusal to accept that household appliances should be ugly.

AI makes the Dyson pattern universal. When the engineering is available to everyone — when the functional specification can be executed by a tool that costs a subscription fee — the aesthetic dimension is all that remains as a basis for differentiation. The company that invests in look and feel, that treats the aesthetic dimension as constitutive rather than decorative, captures value that its functionally identical competitors cannot reach.

Postrel observed in The Substance of Style that this shift was already underway before AI. The rise of design-driven companies — Apple, IKEA, Target's Graves and Starck partnerships, the entire premium segment of every consumer category — testified to a market that was already migrating from functional to aesthetic value. What AI has done is complete the migration. By commoditizing the functional floor, it has made the aesthetic dimension not merely important but definitional.

The implications extend beyond consumer products. Enterprise software, which spent decades competing on feature checklists and integration capabilities, is now competing on experience. The SaaS companies that are surviving the Software Death Cross Segal describes are the ones whose products feel a certain way — whose interfaces communicate competence and care, whose workflows feel intuitive rather than imposed, whose aesthetic signature creates loyalty that functional parity cannot dislodge.

The alien anthropologist, returning after a year to study the AI economy, would observe that the species had reached a peculiar equilibrium. It had built machines that could produce anything that functioned. And it had discovered, in the process, that function was never the point. The point was the feeling. The substance was the style.

Chapter 3: The Taste Premium

The most valuable skill in the AI economy cannot be taught in a semester, cannot be automated by an algorithm, and cannot be acquired by anyone in a hurry. It develops the way a geological formation develops — through the slow, patient accumulation of experience, layer upon layer, until something solid exists where nothing was before.

The skill is taste. Not preference — the passive expression of what one happens to like — but the active, trained capacity to evaluate aesthetic quality. To look at a product, an interface, an environment, a piece of writing, and perceive whether it is excellent or merely adequate. To feel, before articulating, that something is wrong — or, more rarely and more valuably, that something is exactly right.

Virginia Postrel's work provides the framework for understanding why this capacity commands a premium, how it develops, and why it resists the commoditization that AI brings to every other dimension of production.

Start with the economics. In any market, the scarce resource commands the premium. When raw materials were scarce, the premium went to those who controlled supply. When manufacturing capacity was scarce, the premium went to those who could produce at scale. When technical skill was scarce, the premium went to the engineers and programmers who could translate human intention into machine instruction.

AI has made technical skill abundant. Not worthless — skill remains valuable as an input to judgment, the way a surgeon's anatomical knowledge remains valuable even after the scalpel becomes robotic — but abundant in the economic sense: available to anyone with a subscription and a description. The coder who spent years mastering Python is now competing with a college student who can describe a product and have Claude write the Python. The functional output is comparable. The cost difference is enormous.

When execution becomes abundant, the premium migrates to the layer above execution: the capacity to decide what should be executed, and how it should feel. This is the taste premium. It is the economic expression of the scarcity shift that Segal describes throughout The Orange Pill — the transition from valuing the person who can build to valuing the person who knows what is worth building and can specify what it should feel like to use.

Postrel's contribution is to explain why this premium is durable — why taste, unlike execution, resists commoditization even as every other dimension of production is being automated.

The answer begins with how taste develops. Taste is not innate. It is not genetic. It is not distributed by divine lottery to a fortunate few. It is the product of sustained, attentive engagement with quality — exposure, over time, to excellent work across multiple domains, combined with the evaluative practice of distinguishing the excellent from the merely competent.

The senior designer who can look at an interface and say "the spacing is wrong" without measuring a pixel is not exercising a mystical intuition. She is drawing on thousands of hours of looking at interfaces, using interfaces, critiquing interfaces — an accumulated database of aesthetic experience that has been deposited, layer by layer, into a form of knowledge that operates below conscious analysis. She does not calculate the optimal line height. She feels it, the way a musician feels when a chord resolves or a chef feels when a sauce has reduced to the right consistency.

This knowledge cannot be articulated in a prompt. It cannot be extracted from a training dataset. It cannot be transferred from one person to another through documentation or instruction. It can only be developed through the slow, experiential process of exposure and evaluation that no shortcut can replace.

Segal describes an analogous phenomenon in The Orange Pill when he writes about the geological metaphor for understanding — every hour spent debugging deposits a thin layer of comprehension, and the layers accumulate over years into something solid, something the practitioner can stand on. The same geological process produces taste. Every hour spent looking at good design, using well-crafted products, inhabiting thoughtfully designed spaces, deposits a layer of aesthetic understanding. The layers compound. And the person standing on twenty years of accumulated layers sees differently from the person standing on twenty months.

This is what makes taste scarce in the economic sense: the time required to develop it cannot be compressed. AI can compress execution from months to hours. It cannot compress the twenty years of aesthetic experience that allow a creative director to specify what a product should feel like — to describe, in the natural language that AI now understands, not just the functional specification but the experiential quality that will distinguish this product from every other functional equivalent on the market.

Consider what the creative director actually does. In the old economy, the creative director's value was partially obscured by the mechanical demands of execution. Producing a prototype required engineers. Testing it required time. Iterating required multiple cycles of translation between the director's vision and the team's implementation. By the time the product shipped, the director's original aesthetic vision had been filtered through so many layers of execution that the contribution of taste was difficult to isolate from the contribution of technical skill.

AI strips away the layers. The creative director can now describe a vision and see it realized in hours. The translation cost between aesthetic intention and functional reality has collapsed.
