When an engineer in Trivandrum used Claude Code to build a complete frontend feature in two days without any prior frontend experience, the feature worked. The tests passed. The interface responded. By every functional metric, the output was successful. But the engineer did not develop the embodied understanding that two years of frontend development would have deposited. She did not experience the formative friction of a layout that refused to behave, a CSS property that produced unexpected results, a responsive design that collapsed at a breakpoint she had not anticipated. She obtained the artifact without undergoing the process, and the process is where the understanding lives.
Crawford has written that the degradation of work in the modern economy proceeds through exactly this mechanism: the progressive substitution of process by product, of engagement by commodity, of understanding by output. They are administered by reality, and reality does not grade on a curve.
The third criterion is what Crawford might call earned difficulty — the requirement that understanding be built through engagement with materials that resist the practitioner's intentions and force revision of her approach. AI is the most powerful device in Borgmann's sense that human beings have ever built. It delivers the commodities of knowledge work — code, analysis, prose, strategy — while eliminating the engagement that producing those commodities through genuine effort would have required. The commodities are real. The code compiles. The analysis is coherent. The prose is fluent. But the engagement has been bypassed, and the engagement was where the understanding lived.
Crawford's geological metaphor, which echoes through Edo Segal's account of the AI transition in The Orange Pill, captures the temporal dimension of this loss. Each hour of genuine engagement with resistant material deposits a thin layer of understanding. The layers accumulate over months and years into something solid — something the practitioner can stand on. A sophisticated simulation — output that is ninety-five percent correct, articulated with confidence, delivered in prose that sounds like expertise — is almost impossible to distinguish from the genuine article without the genuine article's own hard-won understanding as a basis for comparison. The lawyer who has spent twenty years reading cases can recognize when the AI-generated brief cites a case for a proposition it does not support. The lawyer who has spent twenty years accepting AI-generated briefs cannot, because the capacity for recognition was built through the reading the AI has made unnecessary.
This is the circular vulnerability at the heart of Crawford's analysis applied to the AI moment: the tool's effective use depends on the practitioner's judgment; the practitioner's judgment depends on the engagement that builds understanding; the tool eliminates the engagement. The circle does not close immediately. It closes over a generation, as the practitioners whose judgment was built through pre-AI engagement retire and are replaced by practitioners whose entire experience has been mediated by the tool. The first generation evaluates AI output against independently developed understanding. The second generation evaluates AI output against AI-mediated understanding. Crawford has been explicit about the political-economic dimension of this dynamic, particularly in his 2025 essay "Ownership of the Means of Thinking." The AI revolution, he argued, extends the logic of oligopoly into cognition itself. Crawford's concern — and it is a concern grounded not in nostalgia but in a precise analysis of how understanding is produced and transmitted — is that the coexistence has a natural expiration date, determined by the career span of the last generation trained through unmediated engagement with the material of their work. After that generation, the counterfeit has no original to be compared against, and the distinction between genuine knowledge and its simulation becomes invisible — not because it has been resolved, but because the capacity to perceive it has been lost.

The human drivers at that intersection resolved the ambiguity the way human drivers always do — through eye contact, through a kind of body language of driving, through the social intelligence that emerges when embodied agents negotiate shared space in real time. It is that human judgment, exercised in contact with material reality and tested against incorruptible standards, possesses a quality that automated systems cannot replicate: the quality of being answerable. The mechanic who diagnoses incorrectly is answerable — to the motorcycle, to the customer, to her own professional identity. The AI that produces an incorrect output is answerable to no one, because answerability requires a subject — someone who bears the weight of the diagnosis, who experiences the professional consequences of being wrong, who carries the memory of the failure into the next diagnostic encounter and is changed by it. In his 2021 Senate testimony, published as "Defying the Data Priests," Crawford directed this analysis at the institutions of technological governance. He argued that AI's inscrutability creates a new form of unaccountable power: "a new priesthood peers into a hidden layer of reality that is revealed only by a self-taught AI program — the logic of which is beyond human knowing." The priesthood metaphor is precise. A priest mediates between the laity and a reality the laity cannot access directly. The data scientist mediates between the public and an algorithmic process the public cannot inspect or evaluate. The mediation concentrates power in the mediator and disempowers the mediated, not through force but through opacity — the specific inability of the governed to evaluate the basis upon which decisions affecting them are made.
The incorruptible standard is the antidote to this opacity, because the incorruptible standard is transparent by nature. The motorcycle's verdict is available to anyone who can observe whether the engine is running. The wood's verdict is available to anyone who can see whether the joint holds. The patient's outcome is available to anyone who can assess whether the treatment worked. These verdicts are democratic in the deepest sense: they do not require specialized knowledge to interpret. They are assessable by anyone who can observe the material result.
AI-generated output, by contrast, is evaluated through processes that are opaque to most of the people affected by the output. The code that compiles is evaluated by engineers. The brief that satisfies the client is evaluated by lawyers. The diagnosis that the system generates is evaluated by physicians. In each case, the evaluation requires specialized knowledge that the general public does not possess, and the opacity creates the conditions for what Crawford identifies as a fundamental threat to self-government: the concentration of evaluative authority in a technical class that operates without democratic accountability.
The loss of the incorruptible standard is not merely an epistemic concern. It is a political crisis disguised as a technical improvement. Each domain that AI enters is a domain in which the external, material, democratically accessible test of reality is replaced by an internal, linguistic, technically mediated test of functional adequacy. The replacement is experienced as progress — faster, cheaper, more efficient. It is also experienced, by those who understand what is being lost, as a contraction of the space in which reality's honest feedback operates.
Crawford noted in his 2024 essay "AI as Self-Erasure" what the loss of the standard means at the level of individual experience. He told the story of a father preparing a toast for his daughter's wedding. The father tried ChatGPT. The machine produced something competent — articulate, appropriate, touching in a generic way. The father rejected it, because to use it "would have been to absent himself from this significant moment in the life of his daughter, and in his own life." The toast was not the commodity. The toast was the occasion for the father's engagement — his struggle with words, his attempt to articulate what his daughter meant to him, his willingness to be imperfect in public because the imperfection was the evidence of his presence. The AI-generated toast was smooth. The father's toast would be rough. But the roughness was the signature of a human being who had shown up, who had submitted to the difficulty of saying something true, who had allowed the material — language, in this case — to resist his intentions until something genuine emerged.
