And the design of decisive experiments — the identification of the one variable that distinguishes between competing explanations, the construction of conditions that isolate that variable, the anticipation of the ways in which the experiment might fail to distinguish what it was designed to distinguish — requires the prepared mind. Not the informed mind. The informed mind can generate a list of plausible explanations. Only the prepared mind can design the experiment that eliminates all but one.
The Lille observation almost went unseen because the established framework had pre-classified it as irrelevant. Each correction deposits what Segal, in The Orange Pill, calls a geological layer. The metaphor is apt: each failure examined with rigor lays down a stratum of understanding that becomes part of the investigator's perceptual bedrock. The bedrock is not a database. It is a landscape — contoured, featured, navigable by one who has walked it enough times to know where the ground is solid and where it will give way.
But the failure mechanism operates in tandem with another mechanism that is equally essential and equally threatened by the elimination of friction: the calibration of surprise.
Surprise is not a uniform phenomenon. The novice scientist is surprised by everything — the color of a reagent, the smell of a reaction, the growth rate of a culture, the reading on an instrument. Everything is unfamiliar, and the unfamiliarity registers as a generalized alertness that carries no diagnostic information. The novice does not know what to expect, so every observation exceeds or contradicts a baseline of zero expectation. A culture that grows normally is as surprising to the novice as a culture that grows abnormally, because the novice has not yet built the internal model of normal against which deviations can be measured. The novice's surprise is noise.
The expert's surprise is rare, and its rarity is what makes it meaningful. After years of daily engagement with the same class of phenomena, the expert has constructed a comprehensive, detailed, continuously updated model of what normal looks like. Normal fermentation has a specific color trajectory, a specific pattern of gas production, a specific odor profile at each stage. Normal crystal growth follows specific geometric constraints. Normal culture behavior falls within specific parameters of growth rate, morphology, and metabolic output.
