Scott (1936–2024) was an American political scientist, anthropologist, and Sterling Professor of Political Science at Yale University, where he also co-founded the Program in Agrarian Studies. Each version of the claim contains a measurable truth — AI output does have characteristic weaknesses, identifiable patterns, tendencies toward certain kinds of error — and each version deploys that truth in service of a larger strategic objective: the preservation of a world in which the quality distinctions that human expertise produces remain the primary basis of professional value.

Scott would have recognized the quality argument immediately as a form of what he called moral contestation — the assertion of an alternative standard of value against the standard that the powerful are imposing. The developer is asserting a moral universe in which craft, mastery, and the hard-won understanding that comes from years of friction are the proper measures of professional value. In that moral universe, the person who has spent a decade learning to feel a codebase the way a doctor feels a pulse occupies a position of legitimate authority. In the moral universe the AI proponents are constructing — where speed, breadth, and output volume are the operative measures — that same person's authority is diminished or irrelevant.

The quality argument is a weapon because it contests which moral universe governs the workplace. And it is a weapon of the weak because it can be wielded without open defiance: the developer who raises quality concerns in a code review is performing professional diligence, not resistance. The claim is deniable precisely because it is partly true.

It may also reflect, simultaneously and without contradiction, a defense of the pedagogical model within which the professor's expertise is most valuable — a model in which the student struggles alone with the material, and the professor's judgment of that struggle is the mechanism of credentialing.

Both motivations are real. Neither invalidates the other. And the coexistence is precisely what Scott's framework was designed to illuminate: the way subordinate groups weave genuine beliefs into strategic positions, producing arguments that are stronger than either motivation alone could produce.

There is genuine, empirical evidence that removing productive friction from skill acquisition reduces the depth of the skills acquired. Surgeons trained exclusively on laparoscopic simulators develop different competencies than those who trained on cadavers and living tissue. Pilots who spend most of their training hours on autopilot develop weaker manual flying skills. Students who use calculators before mastering mental arithmetic develop weaker number sense. The pattern is consistent enough to constitute something close to a law of skill development: friction deposits understanding, and the removal of friction removes the deposit.

Scott would have categorized the atrophy argument as what he called the "weapons of the last instance" — the arguments that subordinate groups deploy when other weapons have failed, because they contain enough truth to be undeniable even by the powerful. The landlord in Sedaka could dismiss gossip as jealousy and pilfering as petty theft. He could not so easily dismiss the argument that the destruction of traditional farming practices was destroying knowledge that the community might someday need again. That argument was true. It was also, transparently, a weapon — deployed in service of preserving a social order that benefited the person deploying it.

The atrophy argument has this same dual character. The developer who warns that a generation of engineers trained on AI assistants will lack the ability to debug at the metal level, to understand why a system fails rather than merely how to prompt a system to fix it, is making a claim that is both empirically supported and strategically positioned. The claim is supported because the relationship between productive struggle and deep learning is well-documented across every domain of human expertise. It is strategically positioned because the conclusion — that AI adoption should be slowed, limited, or supplemented with mandatory "manual" practice — happens to preserve the conditions under which the developer's existing expertise retains its maximum value.

Neither the truth nor the strategy invalidates the other. That is what makes the atrophy argument the most formidable weapon in the contemporary Luddite's arsenal: it cannot be dismissed as self-interest because the evidence supports it, and it cannot be accepted uncritically because the strategic motivation is transparent. Like all the most effective weapons of the weak, it occupies the precise territory where sincerity and strategy overlap, and it operates in that territory with a sophistication that should not be underestimated.

Open confrontation is dramatic but brief. A strike ends. A protest disperses. A manifesto is published and then forgotten. Everyday resistance is slow, continuous, and cumulative. The developer who has been raising quality concerns about AI code for eighteen months has, over that period, constructed a sustained argument that shapes the perception of AI tools within her organization — not through any single dramatic act, but through the steady, daily accumulation of small contestations that gradually shift the cultural ground.

Scott called this "the long game of resistance" — the understanding, born of long subordination, that the powerful can win any single confrontation but cannot sustain attention over the long periods that everyday resistance operates on. The landlord who confiscates pilfered grain has won a battle. The peasant who pilfered it yesterday, will pilfer it tomorrow, and will pilfer it the day after that, is playing a different game entirely — one measured not in decisive victories but in the cumulative effect of a thousand small acts that, taken together, amount to a renegotiation of the terms of subordination.

The contemporary Luddite's weapons are playing the same long game. No single quality objection, no single ethics argument, no single warning about atrophy will halt the AI transition. But their cumulative effect — the slow, steady, daily contestation of the terms under which AI is adopted — is already shaping the transition in ways that the adoption metrics cannot capture and the proponents have not yet learned to see.

Whether that shaping will prove sufficient is a different question, and it is a question that the weapons themselves cannot answer. The weapons of the weak are designed for survival, not for victory. They preserve dignity, maintain alternative moral frameworks, and buy time. What happens with the time they buy depends on whether something larger emerges — whether the individual acts of resistance find their way to a collective voice, whether the hidden transcript becomes a public conversation, whether the forum that does not yet exist is built before the terms of the transition are set.

The weapons are real. The resistance is sophisticated. And it is not enough. The gap between sophisticated resistance and effective influence over the terms of the transition is the gap this book exists to examine.

Chapter 3: Foot-Dragging and False Compliance in the AI Workplace

Scott developed his taxonomy of everyday resistance in agrarian societies where the power relations were visible to anyone willing to look. The landlord owned the land. The peasant worked it. The state set the prices and mandated the production methods. But the outlines are visible, and they are consistent enough across enough settings to permit the kind of structural analysis that Scott's framework was designed to produce.
