Not financially — though the arithmetic was brutal every quarter. The cost was cognitive. Every board conversation required me to defend a choice that the numbers said was wrong. Twenty engineers, each now capable of doing what all twenty used to do together. The math wrote itself: keep five, cut fifteen, pocket the margin. I chose differently, and I describe that choice in *The Orange Pill* as a moral decision rather than an economic one.

What I could not articulate at the time was *why* it was moral. I knew it in my body — the way you know a codebase is wrong before you can point to the bug. Something would break if I made the cut. Not the product. Not the output. Something underneath the output, something I had no vocabulary for.

Durkheim gave me the vocabulary.

He was a French sociologist writing in the 1890s about factories and guilds, and he saw something that economists before him had missed entirely. The division of labor — people specializing in different tasks and depending on each other — was not just an efficiency arrangement. It was the *glue*. The baker needs the miller. The miller needs the farmer. Each dependency is economic on the surface and moral underneath, because needing someone creates an obligation to them, and obligation is the substance of which social bonds are made.

When I read that, the Trivandrum room rearranged itself in my memory. The exhilaration was real — I stand by every word I wrote about it. But something else was happening that I had celebrated without understanding. Each engineer becoming self-sufficient meant each engineer needing the others less. The dependencies that had held the team together as a *team* — not just a collection of individuals sharing a Slack channel — were dissolving. I was watching the glue thin in real time and calling it progress.

This book applies Durkheim's framework to the AI revolution with a precision that unsettled me. The concepts are over a century old. They land like they were written yesterday. Anomie — the condition where the old norms no longer fit but new ones haven't formed — is the exact feeling of lying awake at three in the morning knowing you should stop building but having no collective standard that tells you when enough is enough. That is not a personal failing. That is a structural condition. Durkheim saw it coming from a hundred and thirty years away.

The question he forces is the one I had been avoiding: what happens to the bonds between people when the *need* for each other disappears? The tools keep getting better. The question keeps getting sharper.

Chapter 1: The Division of Labor as Moral Fact

The proposition advanced in De la division du travail social was not primarily about factories. It was not primarily about efficiency, output, or the arrangement of workers along an assembly line. The proposition was this: the division of labor is the principal source of social solidarity in complex societies, and it achieves this function not through its economic consequences but through its moral ones. The separation of productive activity into specialized tasks creates mutual dependence, and mutual dependence creates obligation, and obligation — felt, enforced, embedded in the daily texture of social life — is the substance of which the social bond is made.

This claim requires careful separation from the one it is most frequently confused with. Adam Smith, writing a century earlier, had demonstrated that the division of labor increases productivity. His pin factory was an illustration of arithmetic: ten workers performing separate operations produce more pins than ten workers each making whole pins. The conclusion was economic. The moral dimension was absent from the analysis, because Smith was asking how nations become wealthy, and the question of how societies hold together was, for his purposes, secondary.

The two questions are not merely different. They diverge. A society organized for maximum productivity is not necessarily a society organized for maximum cohesion. A factory producing ten thousand pins per day may employ workers who feel no connection to one another, no sense of shared purpose, no awareness that their individual labors constitute a collective enterprise. The pins get made. The workers go home. The society, in the dimension that matters most for its continuation, frays.

What Smith did not see — or rather, what Smith did not need to see — was that the division of labor creates something beyond efficiency. It creates a web of dependencies that is simultaneously economic and moral. The baker depends on the miller for flour. The miller depends on the farmer for grain. The farmer depends on the blacksmith for tools. Each dependency is economic in the obvious sense: the baker cannot bake without flour. But each dependency is also moral, because it creates a relationship, a tie that binds the baker to the miller not merely through contract but through the fabric of social life itself. The baker who depends on the miller owes something to the miller — not a debt that can be discharged by payment, but an ongoing obligation that structures the baker's behavior, constrains the baker's choices, and integrates the baker into a social organism larger than any individual.

This web of dependencies is not a metaphor. It is the actual structure of solidarity in complex societies. Remove any thread, and the web weakens. Remove enough threads, and the web collapses. The collapse is not merely economic — though economic consequences follow. It is moral. People who depend on no one owe nothing to anyone. People who owe nothing to anyone exist in the condition that the subsequent analysis will examine at length: they are anomic, living without the norms that mutual dependence generates, without the obligations that interdependence enforces, without the moral structure that the division of labor, properly understood, provides.

These propositions, established against the intellectual currents of the 1890s, must now be brought to bear on a technological transformation that their author could not have anticipated but that his framework illuminates with striking precision.

The technology described in The Orange Pill has made it possible for individual human beings to perform work that previously required teams. A single builder, conversing with a machine in natural language, can now produce software, design interfaces, draft documents, analyze data, and create products that, only months earlier, demanded the coordinated labor of engineers, designers, product managers, and analysts. The author calls this the collapse of the imagination-to-artifact ratio: the distance between what one can imagine and what one can build has been compressed to the length of a conversation.

From the standpoint of productivity, this is extraordinary. From the standpoint of the moral structure that the division of labor creates, it is potentially catastrophic.

Consider what dissolves when the solo builder replaces the team. Not merely jobs — though jobs dissolve. Not merely organizational charts — though organizational charts dissolve. What dissolves is the web of interdependence that constituted the team's moral structure. The engineer depended on the designer for the visual language of the product. The designer depended on the product manager for the articulation of user needs. The product manager depended on the engineer for the assessment of technical feasibility. Each dependency created a moral relationship: an obligation to communicate clearly, to deliver reliably, to respect the expertise that one lacked and that another possessed.

When one person, augmented by artificial intelligence, can perform all of these functions, the dependencies that constituted the team's moral fabric dissolve. The builder does not need the designer's eye. The builder does not need the engineer's technical judgment. The builder does not need the product manager's strategic sense. The builder converses with a machine that provides approximations of all of these capacities, and the approximations are, for a significant range of purposes, sufficient.

The sufficiency is the danger. Not because the approximations are necessarily inferior — though in many cases they are. But because sufficiency eliminates the need that generated the moral relationship. If the analysis advanced in De la division du travail social is correct — and the evidence of more than a century of sociological research supports its essential claims — then the elimination of need is the elimination of the moral bond that need creates. The baker who no longer requires the miller's flour is free from the dependency. The baker is also free from the obligation, the relationship, the thread in the web that connected baker to miller and, through the miller, to the entire social organism.

The author of The Orange Pill describes the Trivandrum training with a characteristically honest ambivalence. Twenty engineers discovered that each could do the work that previously required all of them together. There was exhilaration — genuine, measurable, physically felt. There was also terror. The terror, though the author does not frame it in sociological terms, was at least partly the recognition that a moral structure was dissolving in real time. The team did not merely become more productive. It became, in a specific and measurable sense, less necessary. Each member needed the others less than before. The dependencies that had constituted the team's solidarity weakened.

The author chose to maintain the team — to keep and even grow the headcount. This was not an economic decision. The arithmetic pointed toward reduction. It was a moral decision, a recognition that the team provides something that individual productivity, however amplified, cannot replace. But the fact that the decision was moral rather than economic reveals the depth of the problem. In a culture that evaluates decisions primarily through economic criteria, moral decisions that contradict economic logic exist on borrowed time. The quarterly numbers arrive. The board conversation recurs. The arithmetic reasserts itself. And the moral argument, however sound, must justify itself in terms that the economic framework was not designed to accommodate.

This is the structural tension that the analysis of the division of labor as moral fact exposes. Every change in the organization of work is simultaneously a change in the moral structure of society. The AI transition is not merely an economic event. It is a moral event of the first order. The societies that treat it as merely an economic event — optimizing for productivity without attending to the moral consequences of dissolved interdependence — will discover what the study of industrial France in the 1890s revealed: that productivity without solidarity produces not wealth but anomie, not progress but disintegration, not freedom but the particular misery of individuals who have everything they need and no one they need it from.

The historical precedent is instructive. When the factory system replaced the workshop, the interdependencies of the workshop — the master's dependence on the journeyman, the journeyman's dependence on the apprentice, the apprentice's dependence on the master — dissolved. What replaced them was not freedom but a new and more brutal form of dependence: the worker's dependence on the factory owner, mediated not by moral obligation but by economic power. The moral bonds of craft solidarity, of guild membership, of mutual obligation between master and apprentice, were destroyed before new moral bonds could be constructed to replace them. The result was the anomie, the social pathology, the human suffering that characterized the early industrial period.

The AI transition repeats this pattern at a higher level of abstraction. The interdependencies of the professional team are dissolving. What replaces them is not a new form of dependence but a new form of independence: the solo builder's self-sufficiency, mediated not by human colleagues but by a machine that approximates the capabilities of an entire team. The independence is real. The moral consequences of the independence are as yet insufficiently examined, and the failure to examine them is itself a form of moral negligence.

Susan Leigh Star, writing in 1989, proposed that the development of distributed artificial intelligence should be evaluated not by its ability to mimic individual human intelligence — the standard of the Turing Test — but by its ability to meet community goals. She called this the Durkheim Test: a system evaluated by its capacity to serve the collective, to incorporate differing viewpoints, to function as a participant in social life rather than as a replacement for it. The proposal was largely ignored at the time. It should not be ignored now. The question of whether an AI system passes the Durkheim Test — whether it strengthens or dissolves the web of social interdependence — is not a technical question. It is a moral one, and it is the question that the analysis of the division of labor as moral fact compels every society confronting this technology to ask.

The division of labor was a moral fact. Its dissolution is a moral crisis. And the response to that crisis must be moral as well as economic, institutional as well as individual, collective as well as personal. The analysis that follows will examine the specific mechanisms of this dissolution, the specific pathologies it produces, and the specific institutional responses it demands. But the foundation is here, in the proposition that the economists overlooked and that the present moment has made impossible to ignore: the bonds between people who need each other are the substance of social life, and a technology that eliminates the need threatens the substance itself.

Chapter 2: Organic Solidarity and the Solo Builder

The distinction between mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity was designed to identify two fundamentally different answers to the question of what holds human groups together. The terms were chosen with deliberate precision. Mechanical solidarity is the solidarity of sameness — the cohesion that prevails in societies where individuals are interchangeable, where the collective conscience is strong enough to override individual difference, where people belong because they are alike. Organic solidarity is the solidarity of difference — the cohesion that prevails in societies where the division of labor has progressed to the point where no single person possesses all the skills necessary for survival, where each person's contribution is partial and therefore dependent on the contributions of others.

The organic quality of this solidarity lies in the analogy to biological organisms. The organs of a body are different from one another and yet depend on one another for the organism's survival. The heart cannot replace the liver. The lungs cannot substitute for the kidneys. Each organ's specificity is what makes the organism possible, and each organ's irreplaceability is what makes the organism vulnerable. The same structural logic applies to organic solidarity. The baker's specificity — the baker's inability to perform surgery — is not a limitation. It is the condition of the baker's social integration. The baker belongs to the social organism precisely because the baker is not a surgeon, not a farmer, not a teacher. The baker's difference is the baker's contribution. The baker's dependence on others who are different is the baker's bond to the collective.

The AI transition destabilizes this structural logic in a way that no previous technological transformation has accomplished. Previous technologies deepened the division of labor. The factory system created new specializations. The information economy created new professions. The internet generated new forms of interdependence. Each transition reorganized the web of mutual dependencies but did not threaten the web itself. The principle of organic solidarity — that complex societies cohere through the functional interdependence of differently specialized individuals — survived each transformation intact.

Artificial intelligence is structurally different. It does not deepen specialization. It makes specialization, across a significant and growing range of professional domains, unnecessary. The author of The Orange Pill documents this with the specificity of direct observation. An engineer who had never written a line of frontend code built a complete user-facing feature in two days. A designer who had never touched backend systems began building complete features end to end. The boundaries between specializations, which had seemed as solid and as necessary as the walls between organs, turned out to be artifacts of a cost — the translation cost that had previously made cross-domain competence impractical. When the cost dropped to the cost of a conversation, people moved across boundaries as if the boundaries had never existed.

The movement is economically rational. It is sociologically significant in a way that demands careful analysis rather than celebration or alarm. If organic solidarity depends on specialization, and if specialization depends on the practical impossibility of any single individual mastering all domains, then a technology that makes cross-domain competence available to individuals threatens the structural foundation of organic solidarity.

It is essential, however, not to overstate the claim. The AI-augmented builder is not literally interchangeable with every other AI-augmented builder. Different builders bring different biographies, different values, different aesthetic sensibilities, different strategic judgments. The fact that all builders now share access to similar tools does not make them identical any more than the fact that all writers share access to the alphabet makes literary culture a form of undifferentiated sameness. The regression toward mechanical solidarity is partial, not total, and the analysis must respect this partiality while still identifying the structural tendency it represents.

The tendency is this: when the functional basis of interdependence weakens — when the engineer no longer needs the designer because the engineer can generate competent designs through AI, when the designer no longer needs the engineer because the designer can generate competent code through AI — the basis of solidarity shifts. It shifts from what people need from each other toward what people share with each other. The builders belong to a community not because they depend on each other's specialized skills but because they share a common identity: they are builders. They share a common practice: they converse with machines. They share a common experience: the exhilaration and vertigo of operating at the frontier.

This shift — from interdependence to shared identity as the primary basis of social cohesion — is the structural direction that the analysis of mechanical and organic solidarity identifies. It does not mean that modern AI-using professionals have become identical to the undifferentiated members of a tribal society. It means that the gravitational center of professional solidarity has moved. The functional interdependence that constituted the strongest form of social bond in professional life has weakened, and what replaces it is a thinner, more voluntary, more fragile form of belonging — belonging through affinity rather than through necessity.

The consequences of this shift extend beyond the workplace. In societies characterized by organic solidarity, individual identity is strong. The division of labor creates differentiated positions, and occupying a differentiated position requires the development of individual characteristics — specific skills, specific perspectives, specific identities that are not shared by all members of the society but are uniquely the individual's own. Organic solidarity produces the individual, and the individual, in turn, sustains organic solidarity through the exercise of capabilities that the division of labor makes necessary.

When specialization weakens, the structural support for strong individual identity weakens with it. This is not a claim about psychology — it is a claim about social structure. The engineer whose professional identity was constituted by a specific, hard-won expertise in backend systems possessed an identity that was structurally supported by the division of labor. The organization needed that expertise. Colleagues depended on it. The identity was reinforced daily by the social fact of being the person others turned to for a specific category of problem. When AI makes it possible for any member of the team to address backend problems, the structural support for that specific identity erodes. The engineer's skills may remain intact. The social role that gave those skills their identity-constituting function has changed.

The author of The Orange Pill describes a senior engineer who oscillated between excitement and terror during the Trivandrum training. The excitement was at the expansion of capability. The terror — which the author correctly identifies as existential rather than merely economic — was at the question the expansion forced: if the implementation work that had consumed eighty percent of his career could be handled by a tool, what was the remaining twenty percent actually worth? The author's answer — that the remaining twenty percent, the judgment, the architectural instinct, the taste, turned out to be everything — is reassuring. But it is reassuring in a way that conceals a structural problem. The twenty percent was always present. It was always valuable. But it was not the basis of the engineer's professional identity. The eighty percent was. The daily practice of implementation, the specific struggles and satisfactions of writing and debugging code, the embodied knowledge that accumulated through years of hands-on work — these constituted the identity. The twenty percent was the crown. The eighty percent was the head it sat on.

The solo builder, then, faces a paradox that the analysis of organic solidarity illuminates. The builder is more capable than ever. The builder is also less structurally integrated than ever. The expansion of individual capability has been purchased at the cost of the interdependence that provided the strongest form of social bond available in professional life. The builder can do more, and the builder belongs less. The doing and the belonging have been separated in a way that the pre-AI division of labor held together.

The consequences of this separation are not immediately visible, because organizations persist after the structural conditions that created them have changed. Teams continue to meet. Stand-ups continue to occur. Slack channels continue to buzz. But the functional interdependence that gave these rituals their binding force has weakened, and rituals without functional substance gradually become performative — maintained out of habit or policy rather than out of the genuine need that once animated them.

The question that the analysis of organic solidarity forces into view is whether a new form of interdependence can replace the functional interdependence that AI has weakened. This question — whether solidarity can be reconstituted on a different structural basis — will be addressed in a subsequent chapter. The present analysis establishes the diagnostic: organic solidarity depends on specialization and mutual dependence; AI weakens both; the structural consequence is a thinning of the social bond in precisely the domain — professional life — where millions of individuals experience their primary form of social integration.

The thinning is not a theory. It is an observable social process, documented in the data on team dissolution, in the testimonies of displaced workers, in the silence of the middle that the author of The Orange Pill identifies as the population experiencing the transition most acutely and articulating it least adequately. The silence is itself a social fact — a product not of individual reticence but of structural conditions that provide no vocabulary for the specific form of loss that the thinning of organic solidarity represents.

Chapter 3: Anomie in the Age of Abundance

Anomie does not mean what most people think it means. It does not mean lawlessness. It does not mean chaos. It does not mean the absence of rules in the colloquial sense, as though anomie were simply a description of a society where people do whatever they want. Anomie, in its original and most rigorous formulation, is the condition that arises when the norms governing human behavior become inadequate to the circumstances in which human beings find themselves.

The distinction is critical. The norms may still exist. They may still be taught, still be preached, still be inscribed in institutional codes and professional guidelines. But they no longer fit. They no longer provide reliable guidance for action. They no longer tell people what to expect from one another, what to demand of themselves, what standards to aspire to, what behaviors to avoid. The norms have not been abolished. They have become irrelevant. And irrelevance, in the moral domain, is more destructive than abolition, because abolition at least announces itself, while irrelevance creeps in silently and is recognized only after the damage is done.

The AI transition is producing anomie in precisely this sense.

The old norms of professional life said: specialize deeply. Spend years, decades, mastering a narrow domain. Build expertise through the slow accumulation of experience, through the patient absorption of tacit knowledge that can only be acquired through practice, through the gradual development of embodied intuition that separates the expert from the merely competent. The old norms said that this investment would be rewarded — that the market would recognize depth, that the organization would promote those who had traveled furthest along the path of specialization. These norms were not arbitrary. They reflected the genuine structure of professional life as it existed for most of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first. Specialization was rewarded because specialization was necessary. The translation cost that separated domains was high enough that crossing domain boundaries was impractical for most individuals. The specialist thrived because the specialist occupied a position that could not be easily filled by a generalist or approximated by a machine.

The AI transition has not formally abolished these norms. No authority has declared them invalid. No institution has replaced them with explicit alternatives. The norms have simply become inadequate to a world in which a junior developer can ship in a weekend what a senior developer previously required months to produce, in which a designer with no coding experience can build complete features end to end, in which a founder with an idea and a conversational AI tool can prototype a product over a weekend that would have required a year of runway and a technical co-founder twelve months earlier.

The inadequacy is the anomie. The norms exist. The world they addressed does not.

Anomie was identified as a pathology of transition — it occurs not in stable societies but in societies undergoing rapid change. The speed of the change is the critical variable. Slow change allows norms to evolve gradually, adapting to new circumstances without producing the disjunction between circumstances and expectations that anomie represents. Rapid change outpaces normative evolution. The circumstances transform faster than the norms can adapt, and the gap between what the norms prescribe and what the world demands is the space in which anomie breeds.

By any available measure, the AI transition is rapid. ChatGPT reached fifty million users in two months. Claude Code's run-rate revenue crossed two and a half billion dollars within months of its emergence as a transformative tool. The percentage of AI-generated code on platforms like GitHub was climbing from a floor, not descending from a ceiling. The technology crossed its threshold in the winter of 2025, and within weeks, positions had hardened, careers had been disrupted, and the structure of the software industry had begun to shift. This speed is incompatible with the gradual normative evolution that would prevent anomie. Professional norms cannot adapt in weeks. They require years, sometimes decades, to crystallize into the stable expectations that constitute moral regulation. They require institutional support: professional associations that articulate standards, educational institutions that transmit them, regulatory bodies that enforce them. None of these institutions have kept pace.

The anomie manifests in specific, observable behaviors. The builder who changes career direction every quarter — not from restlessness or poor character, but from the genuine inability to determine which direction is worth pursuing when every direction seems simultaneously promising and threatened. The student who cannot choose a major because every field appears to be undergoing the same destabilization. The parent who oscillates between encouraging and protecting, unable to settle on a coherent stance because the normative framework that would ground such a stance does not yet exist. The manager who rewrites objectives quarterly, not from strategic insight but from the disorienting awareness that the ground beneath the objectives keeps shifting.

Each of these behaviors, examined individually, appears to be a personal failing — indecisiveness, anxiety, poor planning. Examined sociologically, as manifestations of a structural condition rather than individual pathology, the pattern emerges with the regularity that characterizes all social facts. The regularity is the signature of a social force operating on individuals from outside. Just as suicide rates vary systematically with social integration and social regulation, independently of any individual's psychological state, so the behavioral symptoms of professional anomie vary systematically with the degree of technological disruption the individual's domain has experienced.

There is a dimension of this anomie that the original analysis of industrial society did not anticipate but that the present framework can accommodate. This is anomie of abundance. The anomie documented in studies of industrial societies was typically produced by economic crisis — the sudden disruption of established expectations by market collapse, by rapid enrichment, or by the dislocations of industrialization. The anomie of the AI transition is produced not by crisis but by surplus: by the sudden availability of capabilities that were previously scarce, by the democratization of productive power, by the collapse of barriers that had historically constrained what any individual could attempt.

The anomie of abundance is, in certain respects, more insidious than the anomie of crisis. When a factory closes and workers are displaced, the suffering is visible, and the social response, however inadequate, is at least directed toward a recognized need. When AI amplifies a builder's capabilities twenty-fold, the amplification is celebrated. The normative disorientation it produces — the loss of clear standards, the dissolution of professional boundaries, the impossibility of knowing when enough is enough — is treated as a personal failing rather than a structural condition.

This mismatch between structural cause and individual attribution is characteristic of anomie in all its forms. The anomic individual does not recognize the social origin of their distress. The builder who cannot stop building, who works through the night not because any deadline demands it but because no norm defines when the work is done, experiences the compulsion as a personal characteristic — as drive, as ambition, as the inability to turn off. It is, in fact, a structural condition: the absence of collectively established and collectively enforced norms that would define what constitutes enough in a landscape of unlimited productive capacity.

The productive addiction described in The Orange Pill with such candor — the author working on a transatlantic flight long after the exhilaration had drained away, recognizing the pattern of compulsion but unable to break it — is a textbook manifestation of anomic desire. Not desire for any specific object, but desire freed from the normative constraint that would give it direction and limit. The builder does not want to build a specific thing. The builder wants to build, period — and the wanting has no natural stopping point because no social norm establishes one.

Chapter 9: The Durkheim Test

The value of the Durkheim Test is not that it provides a pass-fail verdict on any particular technology. Star proposed the Durkheim Test in 1989 as an alternative to the individualist assumptions of the Turing Test. The AI transition reopens the question with a force that no previous technological transformation achieved. What replaces the glue?

The answer cannot be nostalgia for the old interdependence. The old interdependence was functional — people needed one another's skills — and the new self-sufficiency is real. Yearning for a form of interdependence that technology has made unnecessary is not a viable social strategy. Neither can the answer be the denial that glue is needed — the position that treats the dissolution of social bonds as an acceptable cost of technological progress. The evidence accumulated across more than a century of research is unambiguous: societies without solidarity produce anomie, isolation, and the specific pathologies that the preceding chapters have documented. It is the kind of question that each generation must answer anew, with whatever tools and challenges that generation faces. The tools have never been more powerful. The challenges have never been more structurally novel. And the solidarity that the moment demands — voluntary, deliberate, sustained against the pressure of technologies that make self-sufficiency easier and collective life harder — has never been more necessary.

A society of self-sufficient individuals, each amplified by their own machine, each producing within the boundaries of their own perspective, each free from the constraints and frustrations of collective life, is a society that has solved the problem of capability. It has not solved the problem of solidarity. And capability without solidarity — production without community, output without belonging, freedom without the bonds that give freedom its meaning — is, in the final analysis, not a solution at all. It is the problem, restated in the language of achievement, wearing the costume of progress, producing the pathology of isolation at a scale and speed that no previous technology made possible.

What holds societies together is not what their members need from one another. It is what they choose to give to one another — not from surplus, not from generosity alone, but from the recognition that a life lived in connection with others is qualitatively different from a life lived in productive solitude. The recognition is not automatic. It must be cultivated, institutionally supported, and transmitted to each new generation. The cultivation is the work. The institutions are the structures that make the work sustainable. And the transmission is the obligation that the present generation owes to the one that will inherit whatever is built — or whatever is left unbuilt — in the years that follow.

Durkheim would not have been impressed by my self-awareness. He would have said: self-awareness is not the solution. The solution is structure. Build the institutions. Create the norms. Stop treating a collective problem as a personal failing.

He is right, and the rightness is uncomfortable, because I am temperamentally allergic to institutions. The builder in me wants to solve every problem through invention. Durkheim insists that some problems can only be solved through collective moral commitment — through the slow, unglamorous work of building professional communities, articulating shared standards, and creating the structures that make voluntary solidarity sustainable. There is no app for anomie. There is no prompt that generates moral community. There is only the decision to show up, to hold yourself accountable to others, to choose belonging over self-sufficiency — and to make that choice not once but daily, against the gravitational pull of a culture that rewards isolation dressed as independence.

What I will carry from this volume is the Durkheim Test. Not as a regulatory framework — though it should become one — but as a question I now ask myself every time I build something: Does this serve the community, or does it just serve the individual user? Does this strengthen the bonds between people, or does it make those bonds unnecessary? Am I building a tool that amplifies connection, or one that makes connection optional?

These are harder questions than "Does it work?" They are the questions that matter.
