The error that haunts me most is not the one Claude made. It is the one I almost missed because the output was too clean to question.
I described this in *The Orange Pill* — the passage where Claude attributed a concept to Deleuze that sounded right, read beautifully, and was wrong in a way that only someone who had actually read Deleuze would catch. "Confident wrongness dressed in good prose," I called it. The smoothness concealed the fracture. I nearly kept it. That near-miss changed how I think about everything we are building.
But it did not give me a framework for understanding *why* the smoothness is dangerous at scale. For that, I needed a historian who spent her career studying what happens when a civilization's entire system for producing and distributing knowledge undergoes a phase transition. Not a philosopher diagnosing cultural malaise. Not an economist measuring productivity. A historian who sat with primary sources for decades and traced, with extraordinary patience, how the shift from handwritten manuscripts to printed books did not merely speed up the old world but created conditions for an entirely new one.
Elizabeth Eisenstein published *The Printing Press as an Agent of Change* in 1979. Nearly seven hundred pages arguing that the most consequential technological event in early modern European history — the one that made the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution structurally possible — had been systematically overlooked by the historians whose job it was to explain that history.
Her central move is surgical. She does not argue that the press *caused* those transformations. She argues it *conditioned* them — created the space in which they could occur. The distinction sounds academic until you apply it to right now. Claude did not cause the engineer in Trivandrum to build features outside her domain. It conditioned the possibility. The language interface did not cause the solo founder to ship a product over a weekend. It removed the barrier that had made the attempt irrational.
Eisenstein gives me something the technology discourse lacks: a precedent studied at sufficient depth to reveal what first-generation observers always miss. The printing press was designed to produce cheaper Bibles. It produced modernity. The consequences that mattered most were the ones nobody anticipated, and the institutions that managed them took centuries to build.

Elizabeth Eisenstein (1923–2016) was an American historian whose work transformed the understanding of how communication technologies shape civilization. Born in New York City and educated at Vassar College and Radcliffe, she spent most of her academic career at the University of Michigan. Her magnum opus, *The Printing Press as an Agent of Change* (1979), argued that the shift from script to print was the unacknowledged precondition for the major intellectual revolutions of early modern Europe — the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the rise of modern science. In 1979, a historian at the University of Michigan published a two-volume work that made an argument so large it took the academic establishment a decade to absorb it. Elizabeth Eisenstein's The Printing Press as an Agent of Change contended that the most consequential technological event in modern European history had been systematically overlooked by the historians whose job it was to explain that history. The Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution — every major cultural transformation of early modern Europe had been attributed to individual genius, religious fervor, economic forces, or some combination of the three. What had been overlooked, Eisenstein argued with nearly seven hundred pages of meticulous evidence, was the communication technology that made all of them possible.
The printing press did not cause the Reformation. Martin Luther's theological convictions were his own, shaped by a specific reading of Paul's epistles and a specific revulsion at indulgence-selling. But the Reformation could not have occurred without the press, because the press created the conditions under which a theological argument composed in Wittenberg could reach every literate person in Germany within weeks. Before the press, Luther would have been one more dissident monk whose protest circulated among a handful of correspondents and was either absorbed or suppressed by the institutional Church. After the press, he was the author of pamphlets that sold three hundred thousand copies in three years — a distribution velocity that no scribal network could have approached and that the Church had no mechanism to contain.
Eisenstein was careful to specify what she meant by "agent." The press was an agent, not the agent, and certainly not the only agent, of change in early modern Europe. She warned explicitly that "the very idea of exploring the effects produced by any particular innovation arouses suspicion that one favors a monocausal interpretation or that one is prone to reductionism and technological determinism." The warning was necessary because the argument was so powerful that it invited misreading. Eisenstein was not saying that technology determined history. She was saying something more precise and more useful: that a change in the means of communication altered the conditions of intellectual life so fundamentally that developments previously attributed to other causes became, for the first time, historically possible.
The distinction between causing and conditioning is the analytical move that makes Eisenstein's framework applicable far beyond the fifteenth century. A cause produces an effect directly. A condition creates the space within which effects become possible. The printing press did not produce the heliocentric theory. Copernicus arrived at that through astronomical observation and mathematical reasoning. But the press created the conditions under which Copernicus's work could be disseminated in standardized form to astronomers across Europe, compared systematically against Ptolemy's tables, and subjected to the collaborative criticism that eventually produced Kepler's corrections and Newton's synthesis. Without the press, Copernicus's manuscript might have circulated among a dozen correspondents, accumulated scribal errors at each copying, and been lost within a generation — the fate of countless medieval manuscripts whose contents we will never know.
The language interface — the capacity of artificial intelligence to receive instructions in natural human language and produce working software, analysis, prose, or other cognitive artifacts in response — operates as an agent of change in precisely Eisenstein's sense. It does not cause the innovations that Segal describes in The Orange Pill. The engineer in Trivandrum who builds features outside her domain is driven by her own ambition and capability. The solo founder who ships a product over a weekend is driven by a specific market insight. The designer who writes backend code for the first time is driven by a creative vision that was always present but previously unrealizable. None of these innovations originates in the AI. Each originates in a human need, a human insight, a human ambition.
What the language interface does — and this is the Eisenstein point, the point that separates structural analysis from mere enthusiasm — is create the conditions under which those needs can be addressed by the people who feel them, without the intermediation that previously stood between intention and artifact. The cost of translation has collapsed. The engineer does not need to learn frontend development to build an interface. The founder does not need a technical co-founder. The designer does not need a backend engineer. The intermediation that the old cost structure required has been bypassed, and the bypass is the agent of change, not the quality of any individual output.
What is often overlooked in discussions of AI's transformative potential is that the same analytical error Eisenstein identified in Renaissance historiography is being reproduced in real time. Commentators attribute the changes they observe to the intelligence of the models, the brilliance of the engineers who built them, the capital deployed by the companies that funded them, the visionary leadership of the executives who directed the investment. These attributions are not wrong. The models are genuinely capable. The engineers are brilliant. The capital is enormous. The leadership is consequential. But they are incomplete in exactly the way that attributing the Reformation to Luther's theology is incomplete. They identify the content without examining the conditions.
The conditions are structural. They have to do with who can build, at what cost, with what speed, and with what relationship between intention and result. These conditions are not features of any individual AI model. They are properties of a communication regime — a way of producing and distributing cognitive artifacts that differs from the previous regime not in degree but in kind. The shift from scribal to print culture was not a quantitative improvement in the speed of book production. It was a qualitative transformation in the conditions of intellectual life. The shift from traditional software development to AI-augmented building is not a quantitative improvement in coding speed. It is a qualitative transformation in the conditions of capability production.
Eisenstein demonstrated this by showing what became possible after the press that was impossible before it. The systematic comparison of ancient texts — what Renaissance humanists called collatio — required multiple copies of the same text, and those copies had to be identical. In the manuscript era, no two copies were identical, because each was produced by a different scribe who introduced different errors. The press made identical copies possible for the first time, and collatio followed — not because humanists suddenly became more careful readers, but because the technology created the conditions under which careful reading could produce cumulative results.
The same structural logic applies to the AI transition. Consider what Segal describes as the "imagination-to-artifact ratio" — the distance between a human idea and its realization. In the manuscript era, the ratio between an author's idea and its circulation was enormous: months of scribal labor, enormous expense, severe restrictions on who could afford to commission a copy. In the print era, the ratio collapsed: days of typesetting, modest expense, availability to anyone who could reach a bookshop. The consequences were not merely that more books existed. The consequences were that entirely new categories of intellectual activity became possible — categories that had no precedent in the manuscript era because the cost structure made them unthinkable.
Speculative publication was one such category. Before the press, publishing a text required a commitment so large that only texts of proven value were copied. After the press, texts of uncertain value could be published on speculation — cheaply enough that the risk of failure was justified by the possibility of success. The result was an explosion of pamphlets, broadsides, experimental treatises, and vernacular works that transformed European intellectual culture not by improving the quality of individual texts but by dramatically expanding the range of what was attempted.
The language interface produces an analogous explosion. When the cost of building software drops from months of professional development to hours of conversation, the range of what is attempted expands in ways that the previous cost structure could not have supported. The marketing manager who builds a custom analytics tool. The teacher who builds a curriculum platform tailored to her specific students. The retired architect who builds a structural analysis application. None of these people would have attempted these projects under the old cost structure, because the investment required — hiring developers, managing a project, translating requirements through multiple intermediaries — was too large relative to the uncertain return. The language interface reduces the investment to the cost of a conversation, and speculative building becomes rational.
This is not a metaphor. It is the same structural mechanism operating in a different medium. The printing press reduced the cost of producing and distributing texts to the point where speculative publication became economically rational. In both cases, the consequence is an explosion of diversity — more ideas attempted, more experiments run, more failures sustained and more successes discovered — that transforms the ecosystem not by improving the quality of any individual output but by dramatically expanding the population of attempts.
Eisenstein's framework demands one further distinction, and it is the distinction that separates her analysis from both techno-utopianism and techno-pessimism. The printing press was an agent of change. It was not a benevolent agent. It did not select for truth, beauty, or social benefit. It amplified whatever was fed into it — Luther's theology and anti-Semitic pamphlets, Copernicus's astronomy and astrological quackery, vernacular Bibles and pornographic broadsides. The press was generous in the way that Segal describes AI as generous: indiscriminate, falling on the deserving and undeserving alike.
The quality of the output depended entirely on the quality of what was fed in and on the institutional structures that emerged to curate, evaluate, and preserve the resulting abundance. Peer review. Editorial standards. The indexed catalog. The research library. These institutions did not exist before the press created the need for them. They were developed over generations, through trial and error, in response to the specific problems that print's abundance created.
The language interface is an agent of the same kind. It does not select for quality. It amplifies what it receives. The institutions that will manage the resulting abundance — the AI equivalents of peer review and the research library — do not yet exist. Building them is the work that the current moment demands, and the historical record suggests it will take longer, require more iteration, and produce more unexpected consequences than anyone currently anticipates.
Eisenstein regarded the printing press not as the cause of modernity but as its unacknowledged precondition — the structural transformation without which the intellectual movements that defined early modern Europe could not have occurred. The language interface may be the unacknowledged precondition of whatever comes next. Not the cause. The condition. The thing that makes it possible. The agent of change that, like its fifteenth-century predecessor, will be the last variable most commentators think to examine and the first one that future historians will recognize as indispensable.
To understand what the language interface is doing to the production of software, it helps to understand what the printing press did to the production of texts — not in summary, but in the granular, social, economic detail that Eisenstein spent her career reconstructing. The transition from scribal to print culture was not a single event. It was a process that unfolded over generations, produced winners and losers in proportions that no one anticipated, and transformed institutions that had seemed permanent into relics of a prior age. The parallels to the present are not decorative. They are structural, and the structures reveal what the present cannot yet see about itself.
In the manuscript era, every text was a handmade object. A scribe sat at a desk with a quill, a pot of ink, and a prepared sheet of parchment or vellum — animal skins that had been soaked, scraped, stretched, and dried, a material process so labor-intensive that the cost of the writing surface often exceeded the cost of the copying itself. A single book could take months to produce. A Bible might take a year or more. The scribe copied letter by letter, line by line, page by page, and at every stage introduced the variations that are inevitable when a human hand reproduces a complex text over hundreds of hours: a word misread, a line skipped, a marginal gloss absorbed into the body of the text, a correction that introduced a new error.
The result was that no two copies of any manuscript were identical. Every copy was an original in the sense that it differed from every other copy of the same work. This mutability had consequences that shaped the entire structure of medieval intellectual life. Knowledge was local, because the version of a text available in Paris might differ significantly from the version available in Bologna. Knowledge was fragile, because a single fire or a single act of neglect could destroy the only copy of a work that existed in a particular region. Knowledge was conservative, because the investment required to copy a text was so enormous that only texts of proven value — Scripture, the Church Fathers, classical authorities, legal codes — justified the expense. Speculative works, experimental treatises, ideas of uncertain merit, had almost no path to circulation because no patron would commission their copying and no monastery would allocate scarce scribal labor to untested material.
The economics of this system produced a severe selection pressure. The intellectual ecosystem of medieval Europe was not impoverished because medieval minds were inferior. It was constrained because the cost of production permitted only a narrow range of ideas to circulate. A brilliant observation by a monk in an Irish abbey had no mechanism for reaching a scholar in Constantinople unless the observation was embedded in a text that someone with resources deemed worth copying — and the determination of "worth copying" was made not by the intellectual community at large but by the small number of institutions that controlled scribal labor: monasteries, cathedral schools, and, later, universities.
The printing press relaxed this selection pressure with a suddenness that contemporaries found disorienting. Between 1450 and 1500 — a single half-century — an estimated twenty million volumes were printed in Europe, more than had been produced by all the scribes in all the monasteries in all the preceding centuries combined. The cost of a book dropped by roughly eighty percent. A text that would have taken a scribe months to copy could be set in type and printed in hundreds of identical copies in days.
The consequences cascaded. First, the obvious one: texts became cheaper, and cheaper texts meant more readers. Literacy rates climbed, and the relationship between literacy and social status began to shift. In the manuscript era, reading was an elite activity — confined to clerics, aristocrats, and the small professional class that served them. In the print era, reading spread to merchants, artisans, and eventually to a broad urban middle class whose demand for printed material drove the economics of the new medium.
But the less obvious consequences were more transformative. The severe selection pressure that had restricted the intellectual ecosystem to proven works was relaxed. Suddenly, speculative publication became economically rational. A printer could set a pamphlet in type, run off a few hundred copies, and test whether a market existed. If the pamphlet sold, more copies could be printed quickly. If it did not, the financial loss was manageable — a few days of labor and materials, not the months of scribal investment that a manuscript required.
The result was an explosion of genres that had no precedent in the manuscript era. Pamphlets — short, cheap, topical, argumentative — became the dominant medium of public discourse. Broadsides. Almanacs. How-to manuals. Vernacular translations of classical works. Travel narratives. Political satires. Heretical tracts. Each of these categories existed before the press in some rudimentary form, but none had circulated widely because the cost of scribal reproduction was prohibitive for works whose value was uncertain or whose audience was narrow. The press made narrowness affordable. A text did not need to appeal to every literate person in Europe to justify its production. It needed only to find a few hundred buyers — a threshold low enough that ideas of every kind, tested and untested, orthodox and heterodox, brilliant and absurd, could enter the public record.
The scribal class experienced this transformation as catastrophe. Professional copyists had spent years developing skills that the market now rewarded less generously with each passing decade. Monastic scriptoria, which had been the engines of textual production for centuries, found their function usurped by a technology that required neither vows of poverty nor years of calligraphic training. The displacement was not instantaneous — manuscripts continued to be produced, sometimes in luxury editions that emphasized the handmade quality the press could not replicate — but the trajectory was clear. Within two generations, professional copying was no longer a viable trade for most practitioners.
Eisenstein documented this displacement without sentimentality but also without dismissal. The scribes were not wrong to perceive a threat. Their skills were genuinely devalued. Their livelihoods were genuinely disrupted. Their communities, organized around scriptoria and the institutions that supported them, were genuinely transformed. The analogy to what Segal calls the "elegists" in the AI discourse — the experienced practitioners who can feel something valuable being lost but cannot articulate what should replace it — is not an analogy at all. It is the same social process, operating through the same economic mechanism, producing the same combination of genuine loss and inadequate response.
What the scribes could not see, because no one alive in 1480 could see it, was what would grow in the space the press created. The institutions that would manage print's abundance — the research library, the indexed catalog, the editorial apparatus, the system of peer review, the concept of copyright — did not exist and could not have been imagined by people whose entire intellectual framework was shaped by scribal culture. These institutions were developed over generations, through experimentation and failure, in response to problems that the press created but that no one anticipated at the moment of its introduction.
The parallel to the current moment is precise enough to be instructive and different enough to be dangerous if taken too literally. The AI language interface is relaxing the selection pressure that restricted software production to trained developers and funded teams, in the same way that the press relaxed the selection pressure that restricted textual production to commissioned manuscripts. The backend engineer in Trivandrum who builds frontend features for the first time, the solo founder who ships a revenue-generating product over a weekend, the designer who writes functional code — each represents a category of production that the old cost structure made impractical. The cost of attempting has fallen below the threshold of speculation, and the result is an explosion of building whose diversity is predictable from the historical precedent even if its specific consequences are not.
But the differences are consequential. The transition from scribal to print culture took two centuries to produce its mature institutional forms. The AI transition is operating on a compressed timeline, not because the underlying social processes are faster — institutions still develop through trial and error, trust still builds slowly, norms still emerge from contested practice — but because the technology itself iterates at a pace that the printing press never approached. Gutenberg's press was essentially the same machine in 1550 as it was in 1450. Claude Code in 2026 is categorically different from the AI tools available in 2023. The technology is moving faster than the institutions that need to manage it, and this gap — between the speed of capability and the speed of institutional adaptation — is the defining structural challenge of the current moment.
There is another difference that warrants careful examination. The scribal economy was a scarcity economy, but it was also a distributed one. Scriptoria existed across Europe, in hundreds of monasteries and dozens of universities, each operating independently and producing texts according to local needs and priorities. The printing economy was similarly distributed: by 1500, printing shops existed in over two hundred European cities, each controlled by an independent master printer who made his own decisions about what to publish. The AI economy is not distributed in this way. The training corpora that enable language models are controlled by a small number of companies. The models themselves are proprietary. The infrastructure required to run them at scale is concentrated in a few corporate data centers. The means of production, to use a phrase that historians of the printing press would recognize, are centralized to a degree that neither scribal nor print culture ever approached.
This concentration has implications that Eisenstein's framework illuminates but that the current discourse has not yet fully reckoned with. The resilience of print culture came from distribution: copies of important works were held in thousands of independent libraries across Europe, and the loss of any single library did not destroy the knowledge. The fragility of the AI commons comes from concentration: the knowledge encoded in training corpora is controlled by corporations whose interests may or may not align with the broader knowledge-producing community, and whose decisions about what to include, what to exclude, and how to weight different sources shape the intellectual environment in ways that are opaque to the users who depend on them.
Eisenstein would have recognized this pattern. The transition from one communication regime to another always involves a redistribution of control over the means of knowledge production. The press took control from monasteries and gave it to printers. The AI interface is taking control from development teams and distributing aspects of it to anyone with access to the tools — but concentrating other aspects, equally consequential, in the corporations that control the models.
Who controls the means of knowledge production, and under what constraints, is the question that determined whether the printing revolution produced the Enlightenment or the Wars of Religion. It produced both. The AI revolution will produce its own versions of both. The question is not whether the transition will be disruptive — the historical record guarantees it will — but whether the institutions that emerge to manage the disruption will be adequate to the scale of the change.
The scribes of the fifteenth century had no map for the world the press would create. The developers of the twenty-first century have no map for the world the language interface is creating. But historians have the advantage of knowing what happened last time — not because history repeats, but because the structural mechanisms that drive communication revolutions operate with a regularity that makes pattern recognition possible, if not prediction. The patterns are legible. The consequences are not yet determined. And the institutions that will determine them are being built now, whether consciously or not, by every person who uses these tools and every organization that deploys them.
Eisenstein identified three properties of the printing press that, taken together, explained its transformative power. She treated each as a separate causal mechanism with distinct consequences, and she insisted that collapsing them into a single "impact of printing" would obscure more than it revealed. The three properties were fixity, dissemination, and standardization. Each operated independently. Each produced consequences that the others could not explain. And each has a precise analogue in the AI transition — an analogue that behaves differently enough from its print-era predecessor to produce consequences that Eisenstein's framework illuminates but does not fully predict.
Fixity came first in Eisenstein's analysis, and it was the property she considered most consequential. Before the printing press, texts were fluid. Every copy was produced by hand, and every hand introduced variations. A scribe might misread a word, skip a line, incorporate a marginal gloss into the body text, or "correct" a passage that seemed erroneous but was in fact accurate. These variations accumulated across generations of copying. By the time a text had been copied a dozen times, the twelfth copy might differ from the first in hundreds of details — some trivial, some significant, some catastrophic for the meaning of the text.
The consequences of this fluidity were enormous. Scholars could not cite a text with confidence, because the passage they cited might not appear in other copies. They could not build systematically on previous work, because the previous work was not stable enough to serve as a foundation. They could not compare observations against a shared reference, because the reference shifted from copy to copy. The entire enterprise of cumulative knowledge-building — the ability of each generation to stand on the shoulders of the previous one — was undermined by the instability of the texts that carried the knowledge.
The printing press introduced what Eisenstein called "typographical fixity." Every copy of a printed edition was identical to every other copy. For the first time in the history of Western knowledge, two scholars in different cities — or different countries — could be certain they were looking at the same text. This certainty was the precondition for citation practices, systematic textual comparison, and the collaborative enterprise that would eventually become modern science. Fixity did not produce science. But science could not have developed without it.
The analogy to AI-generated code seems straightforward but is more complex than it appears. Software produced through the language interface is fixed in one important sense: it runs consistently. A program that has been deployed executes the same instructions on every device that runs it. In this respect, it resembles a printed book more than a manuscript — every "copy" is identical in its behavior, and users in different locations can expect the same results.
But AI-generated code is fluid in a way that printed texts were not, and the fluidity introduces a new category of epistemic challenge. The same prompt, submitted to the same model on two different occasions, may produce different code. The generation process is stochastic — it involves random sampling from probability distributions — and the outputs, while typically similar, are not guaranteed to be identical. A developer who asks Claude to "write a function that sorts a list of customer records by purchase date" will receive working code. If she asks the same question an hour later, she will receive different working code — code that accomplishes the same task but with different variable names, different algorithmic choices, different structural decisions.
This is not analogous to scribal variation, where errors accumulated involuntarily through the physical difficulty of hand-copying. AI variation is structural, built into the generation process itself. And unlike scribal errors, which were usually identifiable by comparing copies, AI variations are often invisible to the user because each version works correctly. The variations are not errors. They are alternative implementations of the same specification — equally valid, equally functional, but different.
The consequences of this generative variability are not yet fully visible, but Eisenstein's framework suggests where to look. In the manuscript era, textual fluidity undermined cumulative knowledge-building because scholars could not be certain they were working from the same text. In the AI era, generative variability threatens a different kind of cumulative process: the ability of developers to understand, maintain, and build upon code they did not write by hand. Code that is generated rather than authored has a different relationship to its creator than code that was written line by line. The developer who wrote a function by hand understands its logic in an embodied sense — every variable name reflects a decision, every structural choice reflects a trade-off that was consciously evaluated. The developer who received a function from an AI understands what the function does but may not understand why it does it that way, or what alternatives were considered and rejected, or what edge cases the particular implementation handles well or badly.
Segal describes this directly in The Orange Pill: the engineer whose architectural confidence eroded after months of AI-assisted development, who "was making architectural decisions with less confidence than she used to and could not explain why." The explanation, in Eisenstein's terms, is a loss of fixity — not in the code itself, which runs consistently, but in the developer's relationship to the code. The knowledge that was formerly fixed through the friction of hand-writing — the embodied understanding of why this function works this way — has become fluid, provisional, external.
Eisenstein would have recognized this as a version of a problem she had already analyzed. The printing press fixed texts but also introduced a new kind of fluidity: the gap between editions. A first edition contained errors. A second edition corrected some of them and introduced others. The reader could not know which edition she held, or whether the passage she was reading had been revised, corrected, or corrupted between editions. Errata sheets were invented as a partial remedy — a dam, in Segal's language — but they were unreliable, often separated from the books they were meant to correct, and frequently ignored.
AI-generated code has its own errata problem. The builder who deploys code generated by an AI tool may deploy code that contains subtle errors — not the syntax errors that a compiler would catch, but logical errors, edge cases, security vulnerabilities, or performance problems that are invisible in casual testing but consequential in production. The speed that makes speculative building rational also makes error propagation rapid. The bypass is liberating — the teacher who builds a curriculum tool, the domain expert who builds an analysis platform, the entrepreneur who ships a product over a weekend — and dangerous, because the quality-management mechanisms that protected users from the consequences of bad software do not apply to software produced outside the institutional structures that enforced them.
The danger is not hypothetical. Software produced without security review may contain vulnerabilities that expose user data. Software produced without accessibility testing may exclude users with disabilities. Software produced without performance testing may fail under load in ways that the builder, who tested only her own usage, could not anticipate. Software produced without legal review may collect data in ways that violate regulations the builder has never heard of. Each of these risks was managed, imperfectly, by the institutional gatekeepers whose function the language interface has bypassed.
The response that Eisenstein's framework suggests is neither the reactive prohibition that the Church attempted with the Index nor the laissez-faire indifference that treats every negative consequence as a "user problem." The response is the development of new quality-management institutions appropriate to the new medium — institutions that serve the filtering function of the old gatekeepers without reimposing the access restrictions that the old gatekeepers enforced.
What might such institutions look like? The historical precedent offers some guidance. Editorial gatekeeping emerged because printers discovered that their reputations depended on quality. Peer review emerged because scholars discovered that the credibility of their disciplines depended on filtering. Libraries and catalogs emerged because readers discovered that abundance without organization was useless. In each case, the institution was developed not in advance of the need but in response to it — through trial and error, over decades, by practitioners who were simultaneously experiencing the benefits and the costs of the new abundance.
The AI equivalent of editorial gatekeeping might be automated code review — AI systems that evaluate AI-generated code for security vulnerabilities, performance issues, and compliance with standards, serving as a second layer of machine intelligence that checks the first. The AI equivalent of peer review might be community-based evaluation systems — platforms where builders share and critique each other's AI-generated projects, developing shared standards through practice rather than mandate. The AI equivalent of the research library might be curated repositories of verified, documented, and maintained AI-generated code — collections that serve as shared references for the building community.
These are speculations, and Eisenstein would have regarded them with the skepticism appropriate to any attempt to predict institutional development in advance of the social learning that produces it. The institutions that ultimately managed print's abundance looked nothing like what fifteenth-century observers would have predicted, because those institutions were shaped by problems that fifteenth-century observers could not have foreseen. The institutions that manage AI's abundance will similarly be shaped by problems that present-day observers cannot anticipate, and the most honest assessment of the current moment is that the institutional development is in its earliest stages — analogous to the decades between Gutenberg's first press and the emergence of the first systematic editorial practices, a period in which the technology existed and was being deployed but the institutional responses were ad hoc, inconsistent, and manifestly inadequate to the scale of the transformation they were meant to manage.
The gap between the displacement of the old gatekeepers and the emergence of the new ones is the most dangerous period in any communication revolution. It is the period in which abundance overwhelms quality, in which the liberation of access overwhelms the capacity for evaluation, in which the exhilaration of building outpaces the development of the judgment needed to build wisely. Eisenstein documented this gap in the print revolution. The AI revolution is living through its version of the same gap. And the width of the gap — the duration of the period in which the old quality mechanisms have been bypassed and the new ones have not yet been developed — will determine much about the character of the world that emerges on the other side.
The burning of the Library of Alexandria is the event that every historian of knowledge invokes when they want to illustrate the fragility of the human intellectual inheritance. The actual circumstances of the library's destruction are more complex and more gradual than the popular image of a single catastrophic fire — the collection likely declined over centuries through a combination of conquest, neglect, and institutional decay — but the symbolic power of the image is undeniable: a building that contained the accumulated knowledge of the ancient world, destroyed, its contents lost forever.
Eisenstein identified the vulnerability of the manuscript tradition as one of the most consequential features of the pre-print intellectual environment. Before the press, knowledge was perpetually at risk. A text that existed in a single copy was one fire away from oblivion. Even texts that existed in multiple copies were vulnerable, because each copy was held in a specific physical location, and the destruction of that location destroyed everything it contained. The monasteries that preserved classical learning through the medieval period were, in this sense, performing an act of heroic preservation — but the preservation was precarious, dependent on the continued existence of specific institutions in specific places, and the margin between preservation and loss was terrifyingly thin.
Eisenstein called the press's response to this vulnerability the "preservative powers of print." The argument was straightforward but its implications were enormous. When a text could be printed in hundreds of copies and distributed across dozens of cities, no single event could destroy it. A fire in one library did not matter if fifty other libraries held copies of the same text. The distribution of identical copies across independent institutions created a redundancy that made knowledge, for the first time in human history, effectively indestructible — barring catastrophe on a scale that would make learning itself impossible.
This preservative power was not merely a practical convenience. It was the precondition for cumulative knowledge. Before print, each generation of scholars faced the real possibility that the works they depended on might not survive to the next generation. A scholar who built upon Ptolemy's astronomical tables could not be certain that those tables would be available to his students, or to their students, or to anyone who might eventually correct and extend his work. The fragility of the textual foundation meant that intellectual progress was always at risk of regression — a step forward could be erased by a single act of destruction, and the step would have to be retraced from whatever survived.
After print, regression became virtually impossible. The works of Copernicus, Vesalius, Galileo, Newton — once printed and distributed, they were permanent features of the intellectual landscape. Subsequent scholars could build on them with confidence that the foundations would not disappear. Cumulative knowledge, the enterprise of each generation standing on the shoulders of the previous one and seeing further, was made structurally possible by the preservative powers of print.
Eisenstein's analysis leads to an uncomfortable examination of the AI knowledge commons, because the AI transition presents a paradox with respect to preservation that has no precise precedent in the print era.
On one hand, the digital infrastructure that supports AI systems preserves data at a scale and redundancy that dwarfs anything the printing press achieved. The internet stores billions of documents in multiple copies across data centers on every continent. The risk that a significant body of knowledge will be destroyed by a single catastrophic event — the Library of Alexandria scenario — is lower than it has ever been. In this sense, the preservative powers of digital technology exceed those of print by orders of magnitude.
On the other hand, the knowledge encoded in a large language model is not preserved in any form that bears resemblance to the preservation that Eisenstein described. A printed book preserves a text. The text can be read, cited, verified, corrected, and argued about by anyone who holds a copy. The provenance of every claim can be traced to a specific author, a specific edition, a specific page. The preservation is transparent — the reader can see exactly what has been preserved and can evaluate its reliability through independent examination.
A large language model preserves something, but what it preserves is not a text. It is a statistical compression of millions of texts — a set of patterns derived from a training corpus that may include peer-reviewed journals, Wikipedia articles, Reddit threads, marketing copy, fiction, and technical documentation, all weighted and blended into a single set of parameters that the model uses to generate responses. The original texts may be preserved elsewhere. But the model's "knowledge" is not the texts themselves. It is an abstraction from them — a lossy compression that retains patterns while discarding the specific evidence from which the patterns were derived.
The consequence is that when an AI system asserts something, the assertion cannot be traced to a source in the way that a claim in a printed book can be traced to a citation. The model does not know which text in its training data contributed to a particular assertion, because the training process does not preserve that mapping. The assertion is the output of a statistical process that has absorbed millions of sources and blended them into a single, undifferentiated signal. The user cannot inspect the evidence. She cannot evaluate the reliability of the sources. She cannot distinguish between an assertion derived from peer-reviewed research and one derived from a forum post written by a teenager on a Sunday afternoon.
Segal encountered this problem directly. In The Orange Pill, he describes a passage in which Claude attributed a concept to the philosopher Gilles Deleuze — a passage that "worked rhetorically" and "sounded right" and "felt like insight" but that, upon examination, misrepresented Deleuze's actual position. The model had generated a plausible-sounding synthesis that bore a family resemblance to Deleuze's work but was not, in fact, a faithful representation of it. The assertion could not be traced to a source because the model does not preserve source mappings. The error was invisible precisely because the surface quality of the output was so polished — what Segal calls "confident wrongness dressed in good prose."
Eisenstein would have recognized this as a version of the problem she had already analyzed in the manuscript tradition, but inverted. In the manuscript era, knowledge was fragile because texts were insufficiently preserved — too few copies, too vulnerable to destruction, too prone to corruption through copying errors. In the AI era, knowledge is fragile in a different way: not because the underlying texts are at risk of loss, but because the model's relationship to those texts is opaque. The preservation is abundant but untraceable. The knowledge exists, somewhere in the statistical patterns, but it cannot be cited, verified, or corrected by the community of knowledge producers who depend on it.
This opacity has consequences for cumulative knowledge-building that Eisenstein's framework illuminates with uncomfortable clarity. Cumulative knowledge depends on the ability of each generation to evaluate, correct, and extend the previous generation's work. Evaluation requires access to the evidence on which claims are based. Correction requires the ability to identify errors and trace them to their sources. Extension requires confidence that the foundations are sound. All three operations are compromised when the knowledge is encoded in a statistical compression whose relationship to its sources is opaque.
The fragility of the AI commons is compounded by its concentration. The training corpora that encode the accumulated knowledge of human civilization are controlled by a small number of corporations. The decisions about what to include in the training data, what to exclude, how to weight different sources, and how to constrain the model's outputs are made by corporate teams whose deliberations are not subject to public scrutiny. The user who relies on Claude's output is relying on decisions she did not participate in, cannot inspect, and has no mechanism to contest.
The contrast with print is instructive. The resilience of the print knowledge commons came from distribution. Copies of important works were held in thousands of independent libraries across dozens of countries, each library controlled by a different institution with different priorities. No single decision — by a publisher, a government, a religious authority — could remove a text from the commons once it had been printed and distributed. The distribution of control across independent institutions was itself a form of preservation, because it ensured that no single point of failure could destroy the knowledge base.
The AI knowledge commons lacks this distributed resilience. The training corpora are centralized. The models are proprietary. The decisions that shape the knowledge base are made by a few organizations whose interests may or may not align with the broader knowledge-producing community. A decision by a single company to retrain a model with different data, to adjust the weighting of different sources, or to modify the constraints on the model's outputs can alter the knowledge base in ways that affect millions of users — and the users have no mechanism to evaluate, contest, or reverse the change.
Eisenstein's framework does not prescribe a solution to this problem, but it does clarify what is at stake. The preservative powers of print were not merely practical. They were the structural foundation on which cumulative knowledge was built. The ability of each generation to stand on the shoulders of the previous one depended on the confidence that the previous generation's work would survive, intact and inspectable, for evaluation and extension. If the AI transition undermines that confidence — if the knowledge encoded in the models cannot be inspected, cited, or traced to its sources — then the cumulative enterprise that print made possible, and that has defined the trajectory of human knowledge for five centuries, faces a structural challenge that no previous communication technology has posed.
The preservative powers of print were not automatic. They were consequences of a specific technology with specific properties — identical reproduction, wide distribution, independent storage. The AI knowledge commons has different properties — statistical compression, opaque provenance, centralized control — and these properties produce a different relationship between knowledge and preservation. Understanding that relationship, and building the institutions needed to manage it, is among the most consequential tasks of the current moment. The historical record suggests that the institutions will emerge — but it also suggests that they will take longer to develop, and will be more contested in their development, than anyone currently anticipates.
In the early sixteenth century, a network of scholars began to coalesce across European borders that would eventually be called the Republic of Letters. It was not a formal institution. It had no charter, no membership rolls, no governing body. It was a practice — the practice of scholars communicating with each other through letters and printed works, sharing observations, criticizing arguments, collaborating on problems, and gradually developing the norms that would define scholarly inquiry for centuries.
The Republic of Letters was made possible by the printing press, but it was not created by it. The press provided the infrastructure — cheap, standardized texts that could be distributed across distances, enabling scholars who had never met to engage with each other's ideas. But the Republic itself was a social achievement, built by people who recognized each other as participants in a shared enterprise and who developed, through practice, the norms and expectations that governed their interactions. Citation practices. Standards of evidence. The obligation to respond to criticism. The principle that ideas, once published, belonged to the community and were subject to communal evaluation. None of these norms were mandated by anyone. They emerged through the accumulation of individual decisions — thousands of scholars, over decades, choosing to hold themselves to standards that no institution enforced.
The Republic of Letters was also, by modern standards, deeply exclusionary. It was composed almost entirely of European men of a certain social class who wrote in Latin or, later, in the major vernacular languages of Western Europe. Women, non-Europeans, the working class, and anyone without access to the educational institutions that trained scholars were effectively excluded. The Republic's universalist rhetoric — the pretense that anyone with ideas could participate — concealed a system of access that was restricted by class, gender, geography, and language. The scholars who celebrated the Republic as a meritocracy of ideas were often blind to the structural barriers that determined who got to have ideas in the first place.
Eisenstein documented the Republic of Letters as a consequence of the printing press's dissemination function, but she was careful to note that the consequence was not automatic. The press created the conditions for scholarly exchange across distances. It did not create the exchange itself. The exchange required people — people who chose to write, to publish, to correspond, to criticize, to collaborate — and the norms that governed their choices were products of social negotiation, not technological determination.
The AI transition is producing its own version of the Republic of Letters, and the version is recognizable to anyone who has spent time in the communities that have formed around AI-augmented building. Segal describes the mutual recognition among people who have taken what he calls the "orange pill" — the moment of realizing that the tools have crossed a capability threshold and that everything about the relationship between human intention and machine capability must be reassessed. That recognition produces a social bond that resembles, in structure if not in content, the bond that united the scholars of the Republic of Letters: the sense of participating in a shared enterprise whose significance is not yet fully understood, and whose norms are still being negotiated.
The discourse Segal describes in Chapter 2 of The Orange Pill — the triumphalists, the elegists, the silent middle — is the early, contentious self-organization of this community. The triumphalists who post metrics like athletes posting personal records. The elegists who mourn something they cannot name. The silent middle who feel both things at once and do not know how to express the contradiction. The voices on X and Substack and in Slack channels, sharing techniques, debating implications, celebrating breakthroughs, warning of dangers. This is the Republic of Builders in its embryonic phase — a network of practitioners who are developing, through practice, the norms that will govern their shared enterprise.
The historical parallel illuminates both the promise and the danger of this emergent community. The Republic of Letters, at its best, was one of the great achievements of European intellectual culture. It created the conditions for collaborative knowledge-building on a scale that the manuscript era could never have supported. The norms it developed — citation, peer criticism, the obligation to respond to evidence — became the foundation of modern scientific practice. The community it created transcended national borders and institutional boundaries, enabling scholars of different nationalities and different disciplinary backgrounds to contribute to a shared enterprise.
But the Republic of Letters also exhibited pathologies that its members were slow to recognize and slower to correct. The exclusivity was one — the systematic exclusion of women, non-Europeans, and the working class from a community that claimed to value ideas above social position. The insularity was another — the tendency of the Republic to become a closed system, a network of established scholars who cited each other and reviewed each other's work and granted each other recognition, making it increasingly difficult for outsiders to enter. The hagiography was a third — the tendency to celebrate the community's achievements without examining its failures, to treat participation as a mark of distinction rather than a responsibility.
These pathologies were not incidental. They were structural consequences of the way the community was organized. The Republic of Letters was organized around institutions — universities, academies, learned societies — that controlled access to the tools of scholarly production: libraries, publishing opportunities, correspondence networks. The institutions served as gatekeepers, and the gatekeeping, while less restrictive than the monastic gatekeeping that preceded it, still limited participation to those who could gain institutional access.
The Republic of Builders exhibits some of the same structural features and is at risk of reproducing some of the same pathologies. The community that has formed around AI-augmented building is disproportionately composed of people in wealthy countries with reliable internet access, English-language fluency, and sufficient economic security to experiment with new tools. The developer in Lagos whom Segal invokes as evidence of democratization is real, but she is not typical. The typical participant in the current AI discourse is a knowledge worker in North America or Europe with a college education and a professional salary. The community's universalist rhetoric — the claim that AI tools are available to everyone and that anyone can build — conceals access barriers that are less visible than the monastic walls of the medieval period but no less effective: bandwidth, hardware, language, economic security, and the cultural capital required to navigate tools built by and for Western knowledge workers.
Eisenstein would have recognized this pattern. The printing press democratized access to texts, but the democratization was uneven. Printed books were cheaper than manuscripts, but they were not free. They required literacy, which required education, which required access to institutions that were themselves unevenly distributed. The press expanded the circle of participation enormously, but it did not eliminate the circle — it drew a new one, larger than the old one but still bounded, and the boundaries were shaped by class, geography, language, and institutional access.
The Republic of Builders faces the same challenge. AI tools expand the circle of who can build, but they do not eliminate the circle. The cost of access — connectivity, hardware, English fluency, the subscription fees that Segal mentions — determines who participates and who watches from outside. The claim that AI democratizes capability is true in the same way that the claim that printing democratized knowledge was true: it expanded access enormously, but the expansion was shaped by economic and social structures that the technology itself did not alter.
What the Republic of Letters can teach the Republic of Builders is primarily about the long arc of institutional development. The norms that governed scholarly exchange in the Republic of Letters — citation practices, standards of evidence, the obligation to engage with criticism — took generations to develop. They were not mandated by any authority. They emerged through the accumulated practice of thousands of scholars who were simultaneously exploring the possibilities of a new communication technology and negotiating the rules that would govern its use.
The Republic of Builders is in the earliest phase of this process. The norms that will govern AI-augmented building — standards for code quality, expectations about disclosure, practices for attribution, mechanisms for quality assurance — are being negotiated in real time, through the contentious discourse that Segal describes. The negotiation is messy, contradictory, and incomplete. Triumphalists and elegists talk past each other. Norms that are accepted in one community are rejected in another. Standards that seem obvious in retrospect have not yet been proposed, because the problems they will address have not yet become visible.
Eisenstein's history provides one further cautionary insight. The Republic of Letters eventually calcified. The norms that had originally served to enable open inquiry gradually became instruments of exclusion, as established scholars used them to police the boundaries of acceptable scholarship and to maintain their own positions within the hierarchy. Peer review, originally a mechanism for improving the quality of published work, became a mechanism for controlling access to publication. Citation practices, originally a mechanism for giving credit and enabling verification, became a mechanism for reinforcing the reputations of established scholars at the expense of newcomers. The institutions that had been built to manage the abundance of print culture became, over time, gatekeepers in their own right — less restrictive than the monastic gatekeepers they had replaced, but gatekeepers nonetheless.
The Republic of Builders will face the same risk. The norms that are currently being developed to manage the abundance of AI-augmented building will, over time, tend to calcify — to become instruments of exclusion rather than inclusion, of control rather than quality, of hierarchy rather than merit. The early participants in any new community tend to establish norms that serve their own interests, and those norms tend to persist long after the conditions that produced them have changed. The printing press produced the Republic of Letters, and the Republic of Letters produced both the Enlightenment and the systems of academic gatekeeping that still constrain scholarly participation today.
The AI transition will produce its own institutions, its own norms, its own systems of inclusion and exclusion. Whether those institutions serve the broad community of builders or primarily the early participants who shaped them will depend on choices that are being made now — in the discourse, in the tooling, in the access structures, in the norms that are being negotiated through practice. The choices are not being made by any single person or any single institution. They are being made collectively, through the accumulated decisions of thousands of practitioners who are simultaneously building with the new tools and building the community that will govern their use.
The Republic of Letters was both a triumph and a cautionary tale. It demonstrated that a new communication technology can produce communities of extraordinary intellectual productivity. It also demonstrated that those communities tend to reproduce the exclusions of the societies that created them, unless deliberate effort is made to resist that tendency. The Republic of Builders has the opportunity to learn from both halves of that lesson — the triumph and the caution — but only if it recognizes that the lesson applies.
The printing press was designed to produce cheaper Bibles.
This fact deserves to sit in the reader's mind for a moment, because it is both entirely true and entirely inadequate as an explanation of what the printing press became. Johannes Gutenberg was a goldsmith and entrepreneur in Mainz who identified a commercial opportunity: the Church needed Bibles, monasteries could not produce them fast enough, and a mechanical process for reproducing text would reduce the cost of each copy while increasing the volume. The business plan was straightforward. The technology was ingenious. The market was clear. Gutenberg designed his press, cast his type, printed his Bibles, and promptly went bankrupt — his creditor, Johann Fust, seized the equipment and completed the print run.
Nothing about this sequence — an entrepreneur identifying a market, building a technology, failing commercially, being succeeded by someone with better business instincts — would have suggested to any observer in 1455 that the device in Fust's workshop would, within a century, fracture the institutional structure of Western Christianity, enable the development of modern science, create the conditions for the emergence of the novel as a literary form, generate an entirely new legal concept called copyright, and produce the newspaper, the pamphlet, the encyclopedia, the research library, and the modern university as recognizable institutional forms.
Every one of these consequences emerged from the interaction between the technology's capabilities and the creative energies of millions of users acting over generations. Not one was foreseeable at the moment of the technology's introduction. Not one was intended by the technology's creators. Not one was predicted by the technology's contemporaries — not because those contemporaries were insufficiently intelligent, but because the consequences were emergent properties of a complex system whose behavior could not be derived from the properties of its components.
Eisenstein was meticulous about this point. She did not argue that the printing press caused the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, or any other specific historical development. She argued that the press created the conditions under which those developments became possible — conditions that did not exist before and that could not have been produced by any other means. The distinction between causing and conditioning is the most important analytical move in her entire framework, because it preserves both the causal significance of the technology and the agency of the human beings who used it. Luther chose to write his theses. Copernicus chose to publish his astronomy. Vesalius chose to challenge Galenic anatomy. The press did not make those choices. It made those choices consequential.
The language interface was designed to produce better code more efficiently. Like Gutenberg's press, this description is entirely true and entirely inadequate. The business plans of the companies that built the large language models — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind — identified clear commercial opportunities: software development was expensive, the demand for developers exceeded the supply, and a tool that could reduce the cost of producing code would capture an enormous market. The technology is ingenious. The market is clear. The commercial logic is sound.
Nothing about this commercial logic predicts the consequences that are already visible, much less the consequences that have not yet emerged. The solo founder who ships a product over a weekend was not in anyone's business plan. The backend engineer who starts building user interfaces was not a target use case. The teacher who builds a curriculum platform, the architect who builds a structural analysis tool, the retired professional who builds a domain-specific application — none of these users were the intended market. They are emergent users, people whose relationship to the technology was not anticipated by its creators and could not have been predicted from the technology's specifications.
Segal's The Orange Pill is, among other things, an attempt to foresee the consequences of the AI transition — to identify the patterns, trace the trajectories, and offer frameworks for understanding what is happening and what will happen next. The attempt is valuable. The patterns he identifies — the five stages of technological transition, the ascending friction thesis, the inversion of specialist and generalist value — are historically grounded and analytically productive. The frameworks he offers — the beaver and the dam, the candle in the darkness, attentional ecology — are useful tools for thinking about a moment that resists easy comprehension.
But Eisenstein's history provides a corrective that any honest assessment of the current moment must incorporate: the most important consequences of a transformative communication technology are, by definition, the ones its contemporaries cannot foresee.
This is not a counsel of despair. It is an empirical observation drawn from the most thoroughly documented communication revolution in human history. The observers who lived through the print revolution were not stupid. Many were extraordinarily perceptive. They saw, with remarkable clarity, the immediate consequences of the press: cheaper books, wider literacy, the erosion of monastic control over textual production. What they could not see — what no one in their position could have seen — were the second-order and third-order consequences that would take decades or centuries to unfold.
Consider the consequence that was most transformative and least anticipated: the emergence of the scientific method as an organized social practice. Before print, natural philosophy was a largely individual enterprise. A scholar might observe nature, formulate hypotheses, and record observations, but the observations were not easily shared, the hypotheses were not systematically tested by others, and the records were not cumulative. After print, the standardization and dissemination of observations made it possible for a community of scholars to build on each other's work — comparing observations against shared references, testing hypotheses against independently collected data, correcting errors through collaborative criticism. The scientific method was not invented by any individual. It emerged from the interaction between a communication technology that enabled certain practices and a community of practitioners who discovered, through trial and error, that those practices produced reliable knowledge.
No one in 1455 could have predicted this. The concept of a "scientific method" did not exist. The institutions that would support it — scientific societies, peer-reviewed journals, research universities — did not exist. The epistemological framework within which it would make sense — empiricism, falsifiability, the distinction between hypothesis and theory — had not been articulated. The consequence was real, transformative, and unforeseeable, because it was an emergent property of a system whose complexity exceeded the cognitive reach of any individual observer.
The AI transition will produce consequences of comparable magnitude and comparable unforeseeability. Some of these consequences are already visible in embryonic form — the Republic of Builders described in the previous chapter, the dissolution of specialist silos that Segal documents, the redistribution of creative capability across populations that were previously excluded from building. But these visible consequences are, in all likelihood, the equivalent of "cheaper Bibles" — the immediate, obvious, anticipated effects that will be dwarfed by the emergent, non-obvious, unanticipated effects that take decades to unfold.
What might those unanticipated consequences look like? The institutional capacity to respond to unforeseen consequences — the ability to adapt, to build new structures when existing ones prove inadequate, to recognize problems before they become catastrophes — is more important than the accuracy of any specific prediction.
Eisenstein's history of the print revolution is, ultimately, a history of institutional adaptation. The institutions that managed print's abundance — peer review, editorial standards, the research library, copyright law — were not designed in advance. They were developed in response to problems that the technology created but that no one anticipated. The development was slow, contested, and never complete. The institutions that emerged were imperfect, and the imperfections produced their own problems, which required their own institutional responses, in a process of continuous adaptation that has not ended five centuries after the technology was introduced.
The AI transition will require the same kind of continuous institutional adaptation, and the historical record suggests that the adaptation will be slower than the technology, more contested than the builders hope, and more consequential than the pessimists fear. The AI discourse, as it exists in 2026, is almost entirely a first-generation discourse. It is focused on the immediate, visible, measurable effects of the language interface: faster code production, expanded capability, the displacement of certain kinds of labor, the democratization of certain kinds of access. These effects are real. They are the equivalent of "cheaper books" in the print revolution — the obvious, economically significant, socially disruptive consequences that anyone who understands the technology can predict.
But the first-generation effects are not the revolution. They are the beginning of the revolution. The revolution is the process that unfolds over decades and generations as the technology interacts with human creativity, institutional adaptation, social contestation, and the accumulation of second-order and third-order consequences that no one alive today can foresee.
Segal identifies the current moment as "Stage Four: Adaptation" in his five-stage model of technological transition. The identification is instructive, but Eisenstein's history suggests that the stages are not as sequential as the model implies. In the print revolution, adaptation and resistance coexisted for generations. The Index Librorum Prohibitorum was published in 1559 — more than a century after Gutenberg's press — and the institutions it represented continued to resist the consequences of print for centuries after that. Adaptation was not a stage that followed resistance. It was a process that operated simultaneously with resistance, in different institutions, in different regions, at different speeds.
The AI transition exhibits the same simultaneity. Adaptation and resistance are not sequential stages but concurrent processes operating at different speeds in different domains. Some organizations are adapting rapidly — restructuring teams, redefining roles, building new workflows around AI tools. Others are resisting with equal vigor — banning AI tools, insisting on traditional methods, treating the technology as a threat to be contained rather than a capability to be integrated. Both responses are occurring at the same time, in the same industries, sometimes in the same organizations. The idea that the technology world will move neatly from resistance to adaptation to expansion is a simplification that the historical record does not support.
What the historical record does support is a more complex and more useful observation: the institutions that ultimately emerge to manage a communication revolution are shaped by the interaction between the technology and the society, not by either one alone. The printing press did not determine whether Europe would get the Reformation or the Counter-Reformation, the Scientific Revolution or the Wars of Religion, the Enlightenment or the Terror. Europe got all of them, and the character of each was shaped by the interaction between the technology's capabilities and the specific social, political, and institutional context in which those capabilities were deployed.
The AI transition will be shaped by the same kind of interaction. The technology creates conditions. The society responds. The response shapes the conditions. The conditions shape further responses. The process is recursive, and the recursion makes prediction unreliable beyond the first generation of effects.
What can be said with confidence is that the institutions that ultimately manage the AI transition will bear little resemblance to the institutions that currently exist. The educational systems that train people for a world of AI-augmented work will not look like current schools and universities with AI modules added. They will be fundamentally different institutions, organized around different principles, teaching different skills, measuring different outcomes. The regulatory frameworks that govern AI deployment will not look like current technology regulations with AI-specific provisions appended. They will be new frameworks, developed in response to problems that current regulations do not address and cannot anticipate.
The same is true of the social norms that govern the use of AI in creative work, in professional practice, in education, in personal life. The norms that eventually stabilize will not be the norms that anyone is currently proposing. They will be the norms that emerge from the accumulated experience of millions of people using these tools over years and decades, discovering through practice what works and what does not, what serves human flourishing and what undermines it, what structures are needed and what structures are counterproductive.
Eisenstein's deepest methodological contribution was her insistence that the historian's task is not to predict the future of a communication revolution but to identify the structural features that shape its trajectory. The current moment is analogous to the decades between Gutenberg's first press and Luther's Ninety-Five Theses — a period in which the technology existed, was being adopted, was producing remarkable outputs, and was generating social disruption, but in which the institutional responses were ad hoc, contested, and manifestly inadequate to the scale of the transformation they were meant to address.

That capacity — the ability to recognize new problems as they emerge, to develop institutional responses through experimentation and social learning, to maintain those responses against the constant pressure of a technology that continues to evolve — is the most important resource a society possesses in the face of a communication revolution. It is, in Segal's language, the dam that matters most: not any specific structure built at any specific point in the river, but the ongoing practice of building, maintaining, and rebuilding structures in response to a current that never stops changing.

The answer will not be what anyone alive today expects. The change after the change is the one that matters. It is the one that the current generation is building the conditions for, whether it knows it or not. And the building has already begun.

That is the image from Eisenstein's work that lodged in my mind and will not leave. A thirteenth-century scribe in a monastery outside Regensburg, copying a passage from Ptolemy's astronomical tables. He misreads a numeral. The error is small — a single digit transposed, the kind of mistake that anyone makes at three in the afternoon when the light is fading and the vellum is rough under your fingers. He does not catch it. The monk who copies his copy does not catch it either, because the copied error looks exactly like a correct entry: confident, neat, embedded in a page of otherwise accurate numbers. The error propagates. A century later, an astronomer in Florence, working from a fourth-generation copy, builds a calculation on a foundation that was corrupted before he was born. His calculation fails. He does not know why.
I think about this when I work with Claude at two in the morning, when the output looks clean and reads well and the logic seems to hold. The surface is polished. The prose is confident. The code runs. And somewhere inside it — maybe — there is a digit transposed, a reference misplaced, a connection drawn between two ideas that are not actually connected, and the polish is precisely what makes the error invisible.
