What the system cannot do is handle inputs that fall outside the calibration range. It was never tested against stimuli of that magnitude, because the natural environment never produced them. A fruit sweeter than any fruit that grows on a tree. A face more symmetrical than any face that has ever belonged to a living human. A problem-solving feedback loop faster than any loop the ancestral environment could sustain. When the input exceeds the range, the regulatory mechanisms that would ordinarily moderate the response are overwhelmed. The satiation signal cannot compete with a reward signal of that intensity. The tragedy is not that the organism is deceived. It is that the organism's detection system is functioning correctly, applying the rule that has worked for millions of years — pursue the most rewarding stimulus — in an environment where the most rewarding stimulus is artificially exaggerated.
What Barrett's framework contributes that no other analytical lens quite provides is the removal of moral judgment from the diagnosis. The builder who cannot stop is not weak-willed, not undisciplined, not failing at self-management. Barrett wrote that her message is that humans possess "the unique ability to exercise self-control, override instincts that lead us astray, and save ourselves from civilization's gaudy traps" — but the first step is recognizing the trap for what it is: not a personal failing but an engineering mismatch between an ancient guidance system and a modern stimulus environment. The intervention that follows from this diagnosis is correspondingly different from the intervention that follows from a moral diagnosis. This distinction between moral and engineering diagnoses matters for every chapter that follows. The question Barrett's framework asks is not "What is wrong with the builder?" but "What is wrong with the environment?" — which is to say, what features of the AI-augmented work environment exceed the calibration range of the human reward system, and what modifications to that environment would bring the stimulus back within the range the organism can regulate?
The answer begins with the specific features of the supernormal stimulus, which requires first understanding what a supernormal stimulus actually is, how it operates across species, and why the mechanism is so difficult for the organism to resist. That understanding starts in a Dutch laboratory in 1951, with a bird, a plaster egg, and an ethologist who realized he had discovered something about the architecture of instinct that would take seventy years to reach its full, uncomfortable relevance.
An oystercatcher is a shorebird. Black and white plumage, orange bill, a preference for coastal habitats. It builds a simple scrape nest on the ground and lays eggs that are roughly the size and color appropriate for a bird of its body mass. It is, by every standard measure, an unremarkable species, and Niko Tinbergen chose it for his experiments precisely because of this unremarkableness. He wanted to study the architecture of instinct in a species where the instinct was simple enough to isolate and robust enough to test.
The experiment was straightforward. Tinbergen placed a series of artificial eggs near an oystercatcher's nest — eggs that varied in size, color, and pattern. Some were slightly larger than the bird's real eggs. Some were painted with more vivid markings. Some were both larger and more vivid. The bird's response was consistent and, once understood, disturbing: given a choice between its own egg and a larger artificial one, the oystercatcher preferred the fake. Given a choice between a modestly oversized egg and a grotesquely oversized one — an egg the size of a volleyball, far too large for the bird to incubate effectively — the oystercatcher chose the volleyball.
The bird climbed on top of it, spread its wings around as much surface as its body could cover, and sat. It abandoned its own viable eggs to incubate a plaster sphere that could never hatch, that bore only the most exaggerated resemblance to a real egg, and that was so large the bird could barely balance on top of it. The maternal response was functioning. The stimulus had simply been inflated beyond the range the response was designed to evaluate.
Tinbergen called these exaggerated signals "supernormal stimuli," and his subsequent experiments demonstrated that the phenomenon was not limited to oystercatchers or to parental behavior. He found it wherever he looked, across species and across behavioral domains. Male stickleback fish, which are territorial and attack rivals that display red coloring on their undersides, attacked a crude wooden block painted with a red stripe more vigorously than they attacked an actual rival fish. The block presented the red-belly feature — the releaser that triggers the aggressive response — at greater intensity than any living stickleback could produce. The response system read the exaggerated feature and responded proportionally. More red, more aggression. The system had no upper bound, no calibrated ceiling that said "this is too red to be a real fish." The response simply scaled with the feature.
Herring gull chicks, which peck at the red spot on their parent's bill to solicit feeding, pecked more vigorously at a disembodied red rod with white stripes than at their actual parent's head. The rod was not a better parent. It was not even recognizably a bird. But it presented the specific feature — the red spot — at supernormal contrast and size, and the chick's response system, which was wired to detect that feature and respond proportionally, produced the maximum response.
Male Australian jewel beetles attempted to copulate with discarded beer bottles. The bottles were brown, dimpled, and reflective — features that, in an exaggerated form, matched the visual cues the beetles used to identify female beetles. The bottle was a supernormal female: bigger, shinier, more intensely textured than any actual beetle. Males mounted the bottles and refused to dismount, even as ants climbed their bodies and began eating them alive. The mating drive, triggered by supernormal visual cues, overrode the self-preservation instinct.
Barrett, synthesizing Tinbergen's ethological work with contemporary evolutionary psychology, identified the structural features that all supernormal stimuli share. The supernormal stimulus does not hide. It exaggerates. The features it presents are the real features the organism is looking for, just bigger, brighter, more vivid. The organism's detection system works perfectly. It detects exactly the features it was designed to detect. It just cannot evaluate whether the magnitude of those features is biologically plausible, because in the ancestral environment, it never needed to. The natural range was the only range that existed.

In each case, the analysis followed the same structure. Identify the evolved response. Identify the natural stimulus that triggers it. Processed food combines sugar, salt, and fat at concentrations that never co-occur in natural foods, producing a reward signal that the satiation system reads as evidence of the most nutritious food the organism has ever encountered. Pornography presents sexual stimuli — novelty, youth, symmetry, exaggerated secondary sex characteristics — at an intensity and variety that no real sexual environment could produce, triggering the mate-seeking response at a frequency the ancestral system was calibrated for over a lifetime, compressed into a single evening. Television and video games present social and threat-assessment stimuli — dramatic conflict, rapid scene changes, the simulated urgency of violence — that trigger the alertness response designed for rare, high-stakes ancestral events and sustain it across hours of continuous exposure.
In every case, the organism is not broken. The environment is supernormal. The distinction matters because it determines the intervention. If the organism is broken — weak-willed, undisciplined, morally deficient — the intervention is individual: therapy, willpower training, moral education. If the environment is supernormal, the intervention is environmental: modify the stimulus landscape to bring it within the range the organism's regulatory system can handle. Barrett argued firmly for the latter, and the evidence supported her. Labeling requirements, portion controls, school lunch reforms, screen-time guidelines — every effective intervention against supernormal-stimulus exploitation has operated at the environmental level, not the individual one.
What Barrett published in 2010 addressed the supernormal landscape that existed at that time. She noted that "we've reversed the relationship between instinct and object to manufacture a glut of things which gratify our basic desires with often-dangerous results." But 2010 was before the smartphone had fully colonized daily life, before social media algorithms had learned to optimize engagement with millisecond precision, before the large language model had made it possible to hold a conversation with a machine that responds with the fluency and attentiveness of an idealized intellectual partner.
Barrett's framework anticipated what she had not yet seen. It predicted, structurally, that any technology capable of presenting the reward features of productive work — feedback speed, execution completeness, progress continuity — at supernormal intensity would exploit the builder's reward system with the same predictability that junk food exploits the eater's, that pornography exploits the mate-seeker's, that social media exploits the social brain's. The mechanism does not care about the domain. It operates wherever an evolved response meets an exaggerated signal.

The instinct is sound. The stimulus is supernormal. And from the inside, the response feels not like a trap but like the best decision the organism has ever made.
The question is what, specifically, the AI-augmented work environment presents that the builder's evolved reward system reads as supernormal. That question requires understanding the specific neural architecture the stimulus exploits — the dopaminergic system that converts the anticipation of productive completion into the motivational surge that keeps the builder building, and that was calibrated, by millions of years of ancestral experience, for a pace of work that no longer exists.
Wolfram Schultz was recording from individual dopamine neurons in the midbrain of a monkey when he noticed something that did not fit the existing model. The prevailing understanding in the early 1990s was that dopamine neurons encoded reward — they fired when the organism received something good. Food, juice, a signal associated with food or juice. The simple version: dopamine equals pleasure.
What Schultz found was more complicated and, ultimately, more important. The neurons did fire when the monkey received an unexpected reward. But after the monkey learned that a particular cue predicted the reward — a light that meant juice was coming — the firing pattern shifted. The neurons stopped responding to the juice itself and began responding to the light. The reward signal moved backward in time, from the moment of receiving to the moment of predicting. And when the cue appeared but the expected reward did not arrive, the neurons produced a specific signature: a dip below baseline at the moment the reward should have occurred. Disappointment, encoded at the level of individual cells.
The system was not tracking reward. It was tracking prediction error — the difference between what the organism expected and what it received. A reward better than expected produced a surge. A reward exactly as expected produced nothing. A reward worse than expected, or absent altogether, produced the dip. The entire architecture was organized not around the experience of pleasure but around the experience of surprise in the service of learning. The system existed to teach the organism what actions lead to what outcomes, and it accomplished this by marking the moments when outcomes deviated from predictions.
The implications for understanding motivation were immediate and profound. If dopamine primarily encoded reward itself, the organism would be most motivated while consuming the reward — during the meal, during the sexual encounter, during the moment of task completion. But that is not what anyone observes. The most intense motivational states occur before the reward, during the pursuit, in the anticipation. The dieter thinks about food more than the person eating. The hunter is more alert on the track than at the kill. The builder is more energized during the build than at the moment of deployment. Schultz's findings explained why: the dopamine surge had already occurred, at the moment the organism predicted the reward was achievable. This dissociation is the neurological architecture of compulsion, and it illuminates a pattern that appears repeatedly in the testimony of builders working with AI tools. The early hours are characterized by both wanting and liking — the surge of motivation accompanied by genuine enjoyment, the experience of creative flow, the pleasure of seeing ideas materialize. But the later hours, the ones that Segal describes as the exhilaration curdling into distress, show a different signature. The motivation persists — the wanting system continues to fire, driven by the continuous stream of achievable next-goals — but the enjoyment has faded. The builder is still pursuing, still anticipating, still responding to each new completion with another surge of wanting. But the liking has departed, and what remains is the hollow compulsion of a reward circuit running without its hedonic partner.
The ancestral calibration of this system matters enormously. In the environment where the dopaminergic prediction-error system was shaped by natural selection, goals were separated from their completion by substantial intervals of effort. The anticipation of a successful hunt — the moment the tracker identified fresh spoor and the dopamine surge said "this is achievable, pursue it" — was followed by hours or days of physical pursuit across difficult terrain. The surge was metabolized during the pursuit. The organism's body processed the dopamine, the motivational state resolved into effort, and by the time the goal was achieved, the system was ready to reset, to assess the environment anew, to determine whether the next goal warranted pursuit.
The interval was the regulatory mechanism. Not willpower, not conscious self-management, but the simple physical fact that goals took time. The time between anticipation and completion allowed the dopaminergic system to return to baseline before the next anticipation-completion cycle began. A hunter who killed a mammoth did not immediately encounter another mammoth. The scarcity of opportunity was the brake, and the brake allowed the system to regulate itself without any conscious intervention from the organism.
AI-augmented building eliminates the interval. A builder working with Claude Code describes a problem and receives a working implementation in minutes. The implementation triggers a completion signal. The completion signal, in Schultz's framework, produces a new prediction: the next goal is achievable, the next feature is within reach, the next problem can be solved in the same timeframe. The dopaminergic system responds to this prediction with another anticipatory surge. The builder begins the next task, receives the next completion, generates the next prediction, receives the next surge.
The cycle that ancestral environments spaced across hours or days now repeats in minutes. The dopaminergic system is releasing anticipatory surges faster than the organism can metabolize them. Each surge drives the next pursuit before the previous one has been neurochemically resolved. The result is a state of continuous dopaminergic activation that the system was never designed to sustain — not because the system is malfunctioning but because the input frequency exceeds the regulatory bandwidth.
Robert Sapolsky, in Behave, documented what sustained dopaminergic activation does to the broader neurological landscape. Prefrontal cortical function, which mediates executive control — the capacity to evaluate whether a currently rewarding activity should continue — is progressively impaired by chronic dopaminergic overstimulation. The very brain region that would allow the builder to step back, assess whether the current activity remains the best use of time, and make a deliberate choice to stop is the region most compromised by the neurochemical state the activity produces. The system that could apply the brake is degraded by the speed at which the vehicle is moving.
This explains a specific feature of the builder's experience that Segal documents in himself and observes in his team: the progressive narrowing of attention. Early in a Claude Code session, the builder is making strategic decisions — what to build, for whom, whether the current direction serves the larger goal. As the session extends and the dopaminergic activation accumulates, the strategic frame contracts. The builder begins to build because building is available, because the next completion is achievable, because the system demands another cycle. The judgment that Segal identifies as the irreducible human contribution — the question of what deserves to exist — is precisely the cognitive function that sustained dopaminergic activation most reliably degrades.

The language matters because it determines the intervention. If the husband's behavior is understood as a choice — a deliberate prioritization of work over family — the intervention is moral: he should choose differently, care more, try harder. If the behavior is understood as a supernormal-stimulus response, the intervention is environmental: modify the stimulus landscape so that the competition between building and nesting is not so grotesquely asymmetric.
