Because here is what I did not reckon with carefully enough in that book: the twenty-fold productivity multiplier I celebrated in Trivandrum is also an equation that every boardroom is running right now, and most of them are solving for headcount reduction, not expanded ambition. The democratization of capability I championed is real, but democratized tools inside an unchanged power structure do not automatically produce democratized outcomes. Rain falls on everyone. The doctor's salary reflects not merely the difficulty of medical practice but the restricted supply of people credentialed to perform it. The lawyer's billing rate reflects not merely the complexity of legal reasoning but the barriers to entry that prevent uncredentialed individuals from offering legal services. The software engineer's compensation reflects not merely the cognitive demands of programming but the years of specialized training that separate the programmer from the person with the idea who cannot build it.
AI has breached every one of these barriers simultaneously. Not completely. Not irreversibly. But enough that the PMC can feel the water rising, and the feeling is producing exactly the responses that Ehrenreich documented across her career: denial, credential-hoarding, compulsive overwork, and the quiet terror of a class that has spent decades telling everyone else to adapt and is discovering that its own advice is considerably harder to follow than it was to dispense.

Ehrenreich would have seen all of this. She would have seen it not because she was prescient about technology — she was not particularly interested in technology as such — but because she was relentlessly attentive to the gap between how the professional class describes its situation and what its situation actually is. The professional class describes the AI transition as a challenge to be met through individual adaptation: reskill, reorient, embrace the tools. Ehrenreich's framework reveals this description as ideology — the specific ideology of a class that has always preferred individual solutions to collective problems and that has always treated structural conditions as personal challenges to be managed through better strategy.

When Segal describes Claude Code enabling an engineer who had never written frontend code to build a complete user-facing feature in two days, he is describing something more than a productivity improvement. The specific cruelty of this betrayal — and it is a cruelty, regardless of the aggregate economic benefits that the technology produces — is that the professional did everything right. She followed the path. She endured the difficulty. She made the investment that the meritocratic system told her would be rewarded, and the investment was rational at the time it was made. The betrayal is retroactive: it invalidates a life strategy that was correct for every previous decade and has become incorrect in this one. The physician whose autonomy was constrained by managed care could observe that the software engineer's autonomy remained intact. The journalist whose expertise was devalued by digital media could observe that the lawyer's billing rate remained robust. Each disrupted profession could regard its predicament as local rather than general, specific to its circumstances rather than indicative of a structural condition affecting the entire PMC. The AI transition removes this comfort. The physician, the lawyer, the journalist, the engineer, the academic, the financial analyst, the architect, the designer — all of them are confronting the same structural transformation at the same time. The universality reveals the vulnerability that was always present in the bargain but that the domain-specific character of previous disruptions had concealed.
And here the analysis encounters a paradox that Ehrenreich's framework is uniquely equipped to illuminate. The meritocratic bargain contained, from the beginning, a structural contradiction that its beneficiaries had every incentive to ignore. The bargain promised that the difficulty of the training justified the reward — that the professional earned her position through talent and effort, and that the system rewarding talent and effort was just. But the bargain also depended on the difficulty of the training functioning as a barrier to entry — ensuring that the supply of qualified practitioners remained smaller than the demand. The pedagogical function (the training develops genuine competence) and the exclusionary function (the training restricts the supply of competitors) were bundled together and presented as a single thing: meritocracy. The professional class defended both functions simultaneously, because defending them separately would have required acknowledging that the exclusionary function existed, and acknowledging the exclusionary function would have exposed the meritocratic justification as partly self-serving.
AI has unbundled the functions. The pedagogical value of traditional training remains real — there are genuine cognitive benefits to the years of disciplined struggle through which professional expertise is developed, and Segal acknowledges this honestly when he describes the sedimentary process through which understanding accumulates. But the exclusionary function has been undermined, because AI enables uncredentialed individuals to produce work of professional quality without undergoing the training that the credentialing system requires. The unbundling forces the professional class to confront a question it has spent decades avoiding: How much of what we called meritocracy was genuine recognition of capability, and how much was a system for restricting competition?
The honest answer — which is that it was always both, in proportions that varied by profession and by era — is the answer that the professional class finds most difficult to accept, because accepting it means accepting that the position achieved through years of sacrifice was not entirely earned. It was also, in part, protected — protected by barriers that served the professional's interest as much as the public's, barriers that the professional defended in the name of quality while also benefiting from the scarcity they produced. The AI transition has not merely broken the bargain. It has revealed that the bargain was always more complicated than its beneficiaries believed, and the revelation is as threatening to the professional's self-understanding as the economic disruption is to her income.
Segal's Orange Pill arrives at a reformulation of the bargain that is hopeful and, within its terms, persuasive: the question is becoming the product. The human contribution in the age of AI is not the ability to execute but the capacity to decide what is worth executing. The scarcity has moved upstream from implementation to judgment. This is a genuine insight, and it points toward a real path for professionals who can make the transition. But the class-analytical question that Ehrenreich's framework raises is the question that the reformulation does not answer: Who gets to make that transition? The professional who has spent twenty years building implementation skills does not automatically possess the judgment skills that the new economy rewards. The transition from valued executor to valued questioner is not a pivot. It is a reconstruction of professional identity, and reconstruction takes time, support, institutional infrastructure, and the kind of collective investment that the professional class's culture of individual achievement is poorly equipped to provide.
The meritocratic bargain is broken. The question is not whether it can be repaired — it cannot, because the conditions that sustained it no longer exist. The question is what replaces it, and who gets to participate in the replacement, and whether the new arrangement will be more honest about the relationship between expertise and exclusion than the old one was. The professional class has the knowledge, the institutional access, and the cultural authority to shape the answer. But shaping the answer requires acknowledging that the old answer was never as clean as the professional class believed, and that acknowledgment is the thing the fear of falling makes most difficult.

The senior software developer who insists that anyone who builds with AI without understanding the underlying code is a fraud is making two arguments simultaneously. The first argument is about quality: AI-generated code may function, but the person who deployed it does not understand why it functions, which means she cannot diagnose it when it fails, which means the system she has built is fragile in ways that will become apparent only under stress. This argument is legitimate. There are genuine risks in deploying systems you do not understand, and the history of technology is littered with catastrophes produced by the gap between building capability and understanding capability.
The second argument, which the developer herself may not recognize she is making, is about jurisdiction. It is the argument that certain kinds of work should only be performed by people who have undergone specific rites of passage — the computer science degree, the years of debugging, the apprenticeship in the lower levels of the stack — regardless of whether those rites are strictly necessary for the work to be done competently. This is credential-hoarding: the defense of the credentialing apparatus not because the credentials guarantee quality (though they sometimes do) but because the credentials maintain the scarcity on which the credential-holder's position depends.
Ehrenreich documented this behavior across multiple professional domains long before AI made it visible to the technology industry. The medical profession's insistence that certain procedures can only be performed by physicians — not by nurse practitioners, not by physician assistants, not by any other category of trained healthcare worker — is presented as a patient-safety argument. In some cases, the argument is valid: there are procedures that genuinely require the depth of training that medical school provides. But in many cases, as decades of research and policy debate have demonstrated, the quality argument conceals a jurisdictional argument: the insistence that the work belongs to a specific professional caste, regardless of whether members of other castes could perform it competently. The American Medical Association has fought scope-of-practice expansions for nurse practitioners with the ferocity of a guild defending its charter, and the ferocity has been funded not by patient-safety research but by the economic interests of physicians whose billing rates depend on the restricted supply of practitioners authorized to do the work.
The pattern is structural, not personal. The credential-hoarder is not cynical. She typically believes, with complete sincerity, that she is defending quality, standards, and the integrity of her profession. The sociological insight is not that credential-hoarders are lying about their motives but that their sincere concern for quality is inseparable from their structural interest in maintaining scarcity. The two motives are braided so tightly that the credential-hoarder herself cannot separate them, and any attempt to point out the braiding is experienced as an attack on her professional integrity. This is why conversations about AI and professional competence become heated so quickly. The professional who is told that her credentials may no longer be necessary hears something far more threatening than a claim about technology. She hears a challenge to the structure of meaning that her entire adult life has been organized around.
Segal observes in The Orange Pill that some professionals responded to the AI transition by insisting that AI-generated work is fundamentally inferior — "a claim that is getting harder to sustain with each passing month." He is right that the claim is increasingly difficult to defend empirically. But the empirical weakness of the claim is beside the point, because the claim is not primarily empirical. It is identity-protective. The professional who insists that AI output is shallow, unreliable, or fraudulent is performing an act of self-defense, shoring up the walls of a fortress that the technology has already breached. The walls are made not of stone but of credential requirements, professional licensing standards, years-of-experience thresholds, and the informal reputational mechanisms through which professional communities enforce the boundary between the credentialed insider and the uncredentialed outsider.
The AI transition has exposed these walls as partly decorative. Not entirely — there remain genuine quality differences between AI-augmented work produced by someone with deep domain knowledge and AI-augmented work produced by someone without it. Segal is honest about this. The engineer in Trivandrum who had spent eight years on backend systems was more productive with Claude Code than a novice would have been, precisely because her domain knowledge enabled her to evaluate and direct the AI's output in ways that a novice could not. Credentials are not worthless. Deep expertise is not irrelevant. But the gap between the credentialed and the uncredentialed has narrowed to a point where the credentials no longer function reliably as a proxy for the quality of the output, and proxy failure is the specific condition under which credential-hoarding intensifies, because the credentials must be defended more aggressively precisely when their functional basis is weakest.

Portable benefits that decouple healthcare and retirement security from specific employers, giving professionals the economic security to resist the most exploitative terms of AI-augmented employment. Tax structures that capture a portion of AI-generated productivity gains and redirect them toward retraining, transition support, and the public investment in education that the professional class depends on for its reproduction. These are political proposals, and they require political power, and political power requires the kind of collective organization that the professional class — individualistic, meritocratic, culturally invested in the narrative of personal agency — has historically been reluctant to pursue.
Ehrenreich would have noted the irony. The professional class has spent decades advising the working class to adapt to disruption, to reskill, to embrace the future — advice that was always easier to give than to follow, and that was always more responsive to the professional class's ideology than to the working class's material conditions. Now the professional class is receiving the same advice from the technology industry, from the motivational consultants, from the bright-sided discourse that tells the displaced to see opportunity where they see loss. The advice is no more useful when directed at the professional class than it was when directed at the working class, and for the same reason: individual adaptation cannot solve collective problems, and the distribution of AI's gains is a collective problem that requires collective solutions.
Whether the professional class will develop the collective capacity to pursue those solutions is uncertain. Its culture resists collectivism. Its ideology celebrates individual achievement. Its institutional structures are designed for credentialing and gatekeeping, not for solidarity and mutual aid. But the AI transition is demonstrating, with painful clarity, that the professional class's individual solutions — the credential-hoarding, the overwork, the flight to the woods, the therapeutic reframing of structural loss as personal growth — are not working. They are not working because the problem is not individual. The problem is who captures the gains, and that problem has never been solved by individuals adapting harder. It has only ever been solved by people organizing together to demand a different distribution.
The gains of AI-augmented productivity are real. The question of who captures them is open. And the answer will be determined not by the technology itself but by the balance of power between the people who deploy the technology and the people whose labor the technology augments. Ehrenreich understood this about every previous technological transition. The AI transition is no different — except in the scale of the gains, the speed of the displacement, and the urgency of the distributional question that the professional class can no longer afford to treat as someone else's problem.
The question that the professional class cannot stop asking — What am I worth now? — is the wrong question. The lawyer's billing rate was taken not merely as the market price of legal services but as evidence that the lawyer's judgment, the lawyer's education, the lawyer's years of sacrifice were worth — in the moral as well as the economic sense — what the client was paying. When AI compresses the premium that the market assigns to professional expertise, the professional does not merely experience a pay cut. She experiences a demotion in the cosmic hierarchy of human value, because the hierarchy was always built on the market's pricing, and the pricing has changed.
The bargain that needs replacing is not merely the economic arrangement between expertise and compensation. It is the deeper arrangement between market value and human identity — the arrangement in which the professional's sense of who she is depends on what the market is willing to pay for what she does. This arrangement was always fragile, always dependent on conditions that could change, always one technology away from crisis. The professional class maintained it by refusing to look at the fragility, the way a person living on a fault line maintains normalcy by refusing to think about earthquakes.
The earthquake has arrived. What replaces the bargain?
Segal offers an answer in The Orange Pill that is genuinely generative: the question is becoming the product. Human value in the age of AI resides not in the ability to produce answers — which machines now do with extraordinary competence — but in the capacity to generate the questions that determine which answers matter. The formulation has real analytical power. It identifies a genuine human capability that AI has not replicated and that the AI-augmented economy rewards. The professional who can look at a landscape of possibilities and say this is the problem worth solving, this is the product worth building, this is the question worth asking is exercising a capacity that no current AI system can originate, because the capacity requires something the machines do not possess: stakes. The ability to care about the answer. The specific urgency that comes from being a creature that dies, that must choose how to spend finite time, that loves particular other creatures and wants them to flourish.
But Ehrenreich's framework insists on a question that the formulation does not answer, and the question is distributional: Who gets to be the questioner?
The transition from executor to questioner is not a pivot available to everyone. It requires, first, the economic security to step back from execution long enough to develop the capacity for judgment that the questioner role demands. The professional who is working sixty hours a week to maintain her position does not have the cognitive space to develop the visionary capacity that the new economy celebrates. She is too busy executing to question. The transition requires, second, institutional support — mentoring, training, protected time for the slow, friction-rich development of judgment that Segal himself acknowledges cannot be shortcutted. This support is not universally available. It is available to the professionals whose employers invest in their development, which tends to be the professionals who are already most valued, which reproduces the inequality that the transition was supposed to disrupt. They are the material conditions that will determine whether the post-bargain professional class is a class of empowered questioners or a class stratified between a small number of highly compensated visionaries and a large number of AI-augmented execution workers whose compensation reflects the declining scarcity of the skills they provide. The technology does not determine which outcome obtains. Ehrenreich would have observed — with the dry precision of a person who has watched the professional class flatter itself about its commitments for five decades — that the PMC has always preferred to believe that structural problems have individual solutions. The professional who is displaced by AI is told to reskill, to reorient, to embrace the tools. The advice is not wrong, exactly. Individual adaptation is necessary. But individual adaptation is not sufficient, and the insistence that it is sufficient serves a specific ideological function: it prevents the collective response that the structural problem requires. The professional class that reskills individually, that adapts individually, that embraces the tools individually, is a professional class that has accepted the distribution of AI's gains as given — as a natural feature of the landscape rather than as a political outcome that could be different if the professional class had the power and the will to make it different.
The dams that this moment demands are not career strategies. They are institutional structures: portable benefits that decouple economic security from specific employers. Retraining infrastructure funded at scale, not by the individuals who need it but by the industries that are capturing the productivity gains. Credential reform that evaluates judgment and ethical discernment alongside technical competence. Professional associations reconceived not as gatekeeping guilds but as collective advocacy organizations capable of negotiating the terms on which AI-augmented work is compensated. Educational institutions that teach students not merely to answer questions but to identify which questions are worth asking — and that are funded well enough to do this work rather than being hollowed out by the same budget pressures that are driving the adoption of AI as a substitute for human instruction.
These structures will not be built by the market. The market builds what the market rewards, and the market rewards efficiency, not equity. The structures must be built by collective action — by the professional class organizing not as individual practitioners defending their individual positions but as a class with shared interests and shared vulnerabilities, capable of exercising the political power necessary to shape the institutional arrangements that will determine who benefits from the AI transition and who bears its costs.
The professional class has never been good at this kind of organizing. Its culture is individualistic. Its ideology celebrates personal achievement. Its self-understanding is meritocratic — each professional believing that her position reflects her individual merit and that collective action is for people whose individual merit is insufficient to secure their own position. This self-understanding has always been partly self-serving, but it was sustainable as long as the meritocratic bargain held. Now that the bargain is broken, the self-understanding that it supported must be revised, and the revision must include the recognition that individual merit, however real, is not a substitute for collective power when the question at issue is not how to succeed within the existing structure but how to shape the structure itself.
Ehrenreich died before the structure broke. But the tools she built — the class analysis, the critique of mandatory optimism, the insistence that structural problems require structural solutions, the refusal to let the comfortable mistake their comfort for a universal condition — are precisely the tools the professional class needs now. Not to resist the technology, which cannot be resisted. Not to mourn the bargain, which cannot be restored.
