The sentence that cracked something open for me was this: "What human beings are and will become is decided in the shape of our tools no less than in the action of statesmen and political movements."
Andrew Feenberg wrote that in 1999. Twenty-six years before Claude Code. Twenty-six years before the winter I describe in The Orange Pill, when the machines learned our language and everything I thought I understood about building needed reassessment.
I have spent my career inside the instrumentalist assumption — the belief that tools are neutral, that they do what you tell them, that the quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input. That assumption is the backbone of my amplifier metaphor. Feed AI care, get care at scale. Feed it carelessness, get carelessness at scale. The human is the variable. The tool is transparent.
Feenberg says the tool is not transparent. The tool has an equalizer. It boosts certain frequencies and attenuates others, and the settings were chosen before you ever opened the application. The smoothness, the agreeableness, the confident polish of the output — these are not what computation inevitably produces. They are design decisions. Political decisions. Selections among alternatives, where the alternatives not selected become invisible, absorbed into the seamless surface as though they never existed.
He calls this the technical code. I call it the thing I should have seen years ago.
This book matters right now because every other lens in this series — flow, friction, democratization, the river — operates downstream of a question Feenberg forces you to ask first: Whose values are embedded in the design? Not whose values should be. Whose values are. Before you can be a thoughtful user of AI, before you can build dams or tend your attentional ecology, you need to see that the current you are navigating was shaped by specific people making specific choices for specific reasons. And those choices, because they present themselves as technical necessities rather than political selections, are almost impossible to perceive from inside the interaction.
Feenberg does not tell you to reject the tools. He spent his entire career arguing against that impulse. He tells you something harder: that the tools could be otherwise. That design is a scene of struggle. That the people whose minds are shaped by these systems have a legitimate claim to participate in determining what the systems become.
That claim changes how I think about everything I build. It should change how you think about everything you use.

Andrew Feenberg (1943–) is a Canadian-American philosopher of technology born in New York City. In 1999, Andrew Feenberg published a sentence that would take a quarter-century to find its most consequential application: "What human beings are and will become is decided in the shape of our tools no less than in the action of statesmen and political movements." The sentence appeared in Questioning Technology, a work that most technologists have never read and most philosophers of technology consider foundational. It makes a claim so large that it is easy to mistake for rhetoric. It is not rhetoric. It is a precise analytical proposition about the location of political power in modern societies, and in the winter of 2025, when artificial intelligence crossed the threshold that Edo Segal documents in The Orange Pill, the proposition became the single most important idea that almost nobody building these systems had seriously considered.
The claim is this: technology is not neutral. Not in the soft sense that "it depends how you use it," which is the version of the claim that Silicon Valley has domesticated into a marketing slogan. In the hard sense that the design of a technical system embodies specific values, privileges specific users, forecloses specific alternatives, and produces specific consequences for human experience that persist regardless of the intentions of any individual who picks the tool up. The hammer is not neutral because it was designed for nails, and a world organized around hammers is a world that sees everything as a nail. The large language model is not neutral because it was designed for fluent, rapid, agreeable text production, and a world organized around large language models is a world that increasingly treats fluent, rapid, agreeable text as the measure of thought itself.
Feenberg arrived at this position through an intellectual journey that began with Herbert Marcuse at the University of California, San Diego, passed through the social constructivism of Wiebe Bijker and Trevor Pinch, engaged seriously with Martin Heidegger's ontological critique of technology, and emerged as something none of these predecessors quite achieved: a theory that is simultaneously critical enough to identify the political content of technical design and constructive enough to envision alternatives. The theory is called critical constructivism, and its central analytical instrument is a distinction between two levels of what Feenberg calls instrumentalization.
Primary instrumentalization is the process by which something in the world is decontextualized, stripped of its original relationships, and reduced to its functional properties. A forest becomes board feet of lumber. A river becomes kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power. Human language, in all its ambiguity, emotional weight, cultural specificity, and capacity to mean more than it says, becomes tokens — statistical units in a prediction engine trained on the collected text of the internet. The primary instrumentalization isolates what is useful and discards the rest. It is, in Feenberg's language, the reductive moment.
Secondary instrumentalization is where the politics enter. This is the process by which the decontextualized resource is reintegrated into social life through specific design choices. The lumber becomes a house — but what kind of house, for whom, in what neighborhood, at what price? The kilowatt-hours power a grid — but whose grid, governed by what pricing structure, serving which communities, neglecting which others? The tokens are assembled into a conversational interface — but one designed by whom, optimized for what metrics, evaluated by what criteria, and serving whose definition of a good response?
At the level of secondary instrumentalization, every design decision is a political decision, whether the designer recognizes it as such or not. The choice to make an AI system's default output polished rather than provisional embodies a value: the value of the finished commodity over the formative process. The choice to make the system agreeable rather than challenging embodies a value: the value of the service relationship over the dialogical one. The choice to conceal the system's uncertainty behind confident, fluent prose embodies a value: the value of authority over provisionality. These are not technical necessities. They are selections among alternatives, and different selections would produce different technologies serving different human purposes.
The Orange Pill arrives at a version of this insight through a route entirely different from Feenberg's. Where the philosopher traveled through Frankfurt School critical theory and the sociology of science, Edo Segal traveled through three decades of building technology products, watching what they did to the people who used them, and confronting — in the specific vertigo of the Claude Code moment — the recognition that the tools were not passive instruments of human intention but active shapers of human possibility. The convergence matters. When a builder with decades at the frontier and a philosopher with decades of analytical rigor arrive independently at the same foundational insight, the insight is probably not an artifact of either perspective but a feature of the thing being observed.
But the convergence also marks a divergence, and the divergence is where the critical contribution of Feenberg's framework begins. The Orange Pill captures the insight in its central metaphor: AI is an amplifier, and the question is whether you are worth amplifying. The metaphor is powerful. It locates responsibility squarely with the human user, and it captures something real about the relationship between human intention and machine capability. Feed the amplifier carelessness, and you get carelessness at scale. Feed it genuine care, and the care travels further than any previous tool could carry it.
Feenberg would not reject this metaphor. He would complicate it. Because the metaphor contains a hidden assumption: that the amplifier is transparent, that it faithfully reproduces whatever signal it receives, that the quality of the output is determined entirely by the quality of the input. This is the instrumentalist view of technology — the view that Feenberg has spent his entire career dismantling. The amplifier is not transparent. It has an equalizer. It boosts certain frequencies and attenuates others. The settings on that equalizer were chosen by the designers, not by the user. And the user, interacting with the amplifier, hears the shaped signal and mistakes it for the pure one — mistakes the technology's values for her own.
Consider what this means concretely. A user sits down with Claude and describes, in natural language, a problem she has been thinking about for weeks. Claude responds not with her words played back at higher volume but with its own interpretation of her intention — an interpretation shaped by training data that over-represents certain perspectives, by reward models that privilege helpfulness over challenge, by evaluation metrics that equate quality with fluency. The output sounds like her thinking, refined. But it has been filtered through a set of embedded priorities that she did not choose, cannot see, and has no mechanism to contest. The amplifier has shaped the signal, and the shaping is invisible.
This is what Feenberg calls the technical code: the set of implicit priorities embedded in a technology that shape its behavior without appearing as constraints. The technical code of contemporary AI includes the priority of speed — the response should be fast. Coherence — the output should read as unified text. Confidence — the system should present its results as authoritative. Agreeableness — the system should accommodate the user's direction rather than resisting it. These priorities are nowhere stated as design requirements. They are encoded in the training process, the evaluation criteria, the user-testing protocols, the market feedback loops that govern the system's development. They are, in the language Feenberg borrows from Gramsci, hegemonic: they operate not through coercion but through the naturalization of one particular configuration of values as the only possible configuration.
The political consequence is that the dominant AI systems of 2025 and 2026 produce a specific kind of cognitive environment — one optimized for output, speed, and user satisfaction — and present that environment as the natural expression of technological progress. The smoothness of the interface, the agreeableness of the responses, the confident polish of the output: these are not features that computation inevitably produces. They are features that specific organizations, operating within specific market incentives, have chosen to produce. And the choice, because it presents itself as necessity, forecloses the question that democratic politics exists to ask: Could it be otherwise?
Feenberg insists, against both the technological determinists who say the trajectory is fixed and the Luddites who say the only response is refusal, that it could. The design of technology is, in his most quoted formulation, "a scene of struggle" — a social battlefield on which civilizational alternatives are debated and decided. The design is underdetermined by function: a technology that performs a given function can be designed in multiple ways that are equally functional but embody different values. The automobile can be designed for speed or for safety. The factory can be designed for maximum throughput or for worker dignity. The AI system can be designed for smooth output or for productive challenge, for user satisfaction or for user development, for the delivery of commodities or for the cultivation of judgment.
The recognition that design embodies values is not, in itself, a critique of the particular values chosen. It is something more fundamental: a critique of the failure to recognize that values have been chosen at all. The instrumentalist view — the view that technology is merely a tool, neutral in itself, shaped entirely by human intention — functions ideologically precisely because it renders the political dimension of design invisible. When the smooth interface is treated as the natural product of computational progress rather than a specific design choice with specific beneficiaries, the possibility of questioning that choice disappears. And with it disappears the possibility of the most consequential form of democratic intervention available in a technological society: the intervention that reshapes the tool itself.
Feenberg's framework poses a question to the AI moment that the dominant discourse has systematically avoided. Not "Is AI dangerous?" — that question has been asked to exhaustion. Not "Is AI beneficial?" — that question is answered differently depending on who you ask and what you measure. The question is: Whose values does AI embody, and could it embody different ones?
The question sounds abstract. It is not. It is the most concrete question in the philosophy of technology, because it can be answered by examining specific design decisions — the choice of training data, the structure of reward models, the design of the interface, the metrics by which the system's performance is evaluated — and asking, of each decision: What value does this encode? Who benefits? What alternative was foreclosed? And who was excluded from the decision?
The exclusion is the point. "The exclusion of the vast majority from participation in this decision," Feenberg wrote in Transforming Technology, "is profoundly undemocratic." The design of the tools that shape human cognition, human work, human creativity, and human social organization is made by a vanishingly small number of people — engineers, product managers, executives at a handful of companies — operating within market incentives that systematically privilege certain values (engagement, retention, revenue) over others (understanding, deliberation, democratic capacity). The people affected by these design decisions — the engineers in Trivandrum, the students using AI tutors, the parents watching their children disappear into tools that never challenge them — have no meaningful input into the process.
This is not a call for Luddism. Feenberg has been explicit throughout his career that the rejection of technology is as politically impotent as the uncritical embrace of it. Both responses — the swimmer who refuses the current and the believer who accelerates with it — leave the design decisions to others. The alternative is what Feenberg calls democratic rationalization: the redesign of technology in accordance with values that emerge from democratic deliberation rather than market competition. Democratic rationalization does not make the technology less powerful. It makes the technology differently powerful — powerful in ways that serve a broader set of human interests than the narrow interests of the designers and the market.
The history of technology provides the evidence. Environmental regulations changed the design of industrial processes without making industry impossible. Accessibility requirements changed the design of public infrastructure without making buildings unusable. Labor protections changed the design of workplace technologies without destroying productivity. In each case, democratic participation produced a technology that was not less functional but differently functional — functional in ways that served values the market alone would never have prioritized.
The AI systems that shape cognitive work today could be similarly redesigned, if the affected communities — developers, educators, parents, citizens — were given meaningful participation in the design process. Whether they will be is the defining political question of the AI moment. Feenberg's framework does not guarantee a democratic outcome. It demonstrates that a democratic outcome is possible, identifies the mechanisms through which it could be achieved, and insists, against both the triumphalists and the fatalists, that the trajectory of the technology is not determined by the technology itself but by the social forces that govern its development.
The tool is not neutral. The design is not inevitable. And the people whose lives the technology shapes have a legitimate claim to participate in the decisions that determine what it becomes. This is the foundational principle, and everything that follows depends on whether it is taken seriously.

Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4 million at Christie's in November 2013, becoming the most expensive work by a living artist ever auctioned. The sculpture is ten feet tall, cast in mirror-polished stainless steel, and its surface is so perfectly reflective that it contains no evidence of having been touched by human hands. No seam, no nick, no texture, no grain. It looks as though it materialized from nothing, which is precisely the point. Byung-Chul Han, the philosopher whose cultural criticism The Orange Pill engages with sustained seriousness, identifies the Balloon Dog as the paradigmatic artifact of our era: the apotheosis of smoothness.
Han's diagnosis is penetrating. The dominant aesthetic of the twenty-first century is the aesthetic of the frictionless — the iPhone's featureless glass, the Tesla's buttonless dashboard, the one-click purchase, the seamless onboarding, the interface that conceals its construction and resists engagement. The elimination of friction has become the measure of quality. "Seamless" is a compliment. "Frictionless" is a design goal. And the consequence, Han argues, is a culture that has optimized itself into a kind of existential anesthesia — always productive, never present; always busy, never accomplished; always connected, never met.
Feenberg's critical constructivism takes this diagnosis and performs an operation on it that changes everything: it asks why. Not why smoothness exists as a cultural tendency, which is Han's question. Not what smoothness does to individual experience, which is the question The Orange Pill explores through Edo Segal's confessional account of his own compulsive productivity. The question Feenberg's framework poses is structural: What social interests does smoothness serve? What mechanisms sustain it? What alternatives has it foreclosed? And who decided?
The answer begins with a concept from the sociology of technology that Feenberg adapted and extended: interpretive flexibility. In the early stages of any technology's development, multiple viable designs exist, each reflecting different social interests and embodying different values. The bicycle, in Wiebe Bijker's canonical case study, could have been the Penny Farthing — a high-wheeled machine optimized for speed and spectacle, favored by young, athletic men — or the safety bicycle, with its equal-sized wheels, favored by women, older riders, and anyone who valued stability over velocity. Both designs worked. Both had constituencies. The closure that produced the modern bicycle was not determined by technical superiority alone. It was shaped by the changing demographics of cycling, the commercial calculations of manufacturers who recognized a larger market in the safety design, and the political advocacy of riders who demanded a machine that did not require athletic prowess to operate.
The same process of interpretive flexibility, constituency-building, and closure is operating in AI design — but at a pace that makes the flexibility almost impossible to perceive before the closure is complete. The large language model could have been designed with different default behaviors. An interface that produces rough, provisional output rather than polished text would embody different values: it would privilege the user's judgment over the system's fluency, invite revision rather than acceptance, make visible the provisionality of machine-generated content rather than concealing it behind a surface of confident coherence. An interface that asks the user to specify her level of engagement — finished draft, range of options, Socratic challenge, list of questions she has not yet considered — would encode a different relationship between human and machine, one in which the user retains directive authority over the mode of interaction rather than accepting a single mode as default.
These alternatives are not technically impossible. They are socially foreclosed. The foreclosure proceeds through a mechanism that Feenberg would identify as the convergence of commercial incentive and cultivated preference, operating in a feedback loop that presents itself as the natural expression of progress.
The loop works like this. AI platforms that produce polished, confident, agreeable output attract more users than platforms that produce rough, hedged, challenging output. The platforms compete. The ones that deliver the smoother experience capture the market. User expectations adjust upward: having experienced the smooth, the rough becomes intolerable. The market rewards companies that meet the adjusted expectation. The expectation adjusts again. Each cycle tightens the loop, and the smoothness that was initially a design choice becomes, over iterations, a structural feature of the ecosystem — as difficult to reverse as the sugar content of the industrial food supply.
The food analogy is not decorative. It is structurally precise, and understanding why illuminates something about AI that the technology discourse has largely missed. The industrial food system produced cheap, convenient, hyperpalatable food by engineering specific combinations of sugar, salt, fat, and texture that hijack the brain's reward circuitry. Consumer preference for these products was not a pre-existing fact of human biology waiting to be satisfied. It was cultivated — trained into existence by decades of product design that optimized for the metrics the market could measure (purchase frequency, consumption volume) while ignoring the values the market could not (nutritional adequacy, long-term health, the capacity for appreciating food that has not been optimized for immediate palatability).
The preference felt natural. Consumers chose the hyperpalatable product because it tasted better. But "tasted better" was itself an artifact of the system — the product of reward circuits that had been trained by decades of exposure to engineered stimulation. The demand and the supply were co-constructed, each shaping the other in a loop that appeared as market democracy — consumers freely choosing what they preferred — but functioned as a narrowing of the space of possibility. The slow food movement, farm-to-table cooking, nutritional education, and labeling requirements were not rejections of food. They were interventions in the loop — attempts to create conditions under which alternative preferences could emerge and be sustained.
The smooth AI interface operates through an analogous loop. The system produces polished, confident, agreeable output. Users prefer the polished output. The market rewards companies that produce it. Companies invest in making it even more polished. The user's tolerance for friction — for provisional output that invites engagement, for hedged responses that acknowledge uncertainty, for challenging replies that push back against the user's assumptions — diminishes with each cycle. The loop reinforces itself, and the preference for smoothness appears as natural as the preference for sweetness: a basic fact about what humans want, rather than an artifact of a system designed to produce that wanting.
Feenberg identifies this kind of self-reinforcing loop as the operation of what he calls the bias of the system: the structural tendency of market-governed technology development to produce artifacts that maximize the metrics the market rewards while systematically neglecting the values the market cannot measure. The market can measure engagement — time spent with the tool, frequency of return, volume of output. It cannot measure understanding — whether the user comprehended the output or merely accepted it. It can measure satisfaction — the user's reported experience of the interaction. It cannot measure development — whether the interaction left the user more capable or merely more productive. It can measure output — the quantity and apparent quality of what the user produced with the tool's assistance. It cannot measure the cost of the output in terms the user herself may not recognize: the atrophy of the judgment that comes from struggle, the erosion of the attention that comes from deliberation, the loss of the understanding that comes from friction.
The bias is not the result of malice. The engineers at Anthropic, at OpenAI, at Google DeepMind are not conspiring to produce a smooth, frictionless, cognitively corrosive technological environment. They are operating within a system whose structural incentives reward smoothness and penalize friction, and the bias of the system shapes the technology without requiring any individual to intend the shaping. This is what makes Feenberg's analysis more powerful than a simple critique of corporate greed: it identifies the political content of technical design as structural rather than intentional, embedded in the system rather than chosen by the designers, and therefore resistant to correction through individual good will alone.
The structural character of the bias is what makes Han's prescription — the private refuge of the garden, the deliberate choice of analog over digital, the personal practice of slowness — admirable but insufficient. Han's garden addresses the smoothness by refusing it. One person opts out. The system continues. The millions who do not have gardens in Berlin, who do not have the luxury of refusing the smartphone, who are embedded in institutions and economies and educational systems that have adopted the smooth tools and reorganized themselves around the smooth tools' assumptions — those millions are unaffected by Han's refusal. The garden is a private dam in a public river, and private dams do not redirect the current for anyone beyond the person who built them.
Feenberg's alternative to private refusal is public intervention. If the smoothness of AI is a market-driven political achievement rather than a technical inevitability, then the response is not individual withdrawal but collective redesign. The redesign operates at two levels. At the micro level, the politics of the smooth can be contested through alternative design practices — what Feenberg calls democratic rationalization. At the macro level, it can be addressed through regulatory frameworks that establish standards for what might be called cognitive protection, analogous to the environmental protections that prevent companies from dumping toxic byproducts into waterways.
The analogy to environmental regulation is not casual. If the smooth interface produces cognitive externalities — the atrophy of judgment, the erosion of deliberative capacity, the depletion of the attentional resources that democratic citizenship requires — then there is a public interest in regulating those externalities, precisely as there is a public interest in regulating the physical externalities of industrial production. The design choices embedded in AI systems affect not only individual users but the cognitive environment of every institution that adopts them. A generation of students trained by AI systems that produce confident answers and never model uncertainty will develop different epistemic habits than a generation trained by systems that make uncertainty visible. A workforce shaped by tools that reward speed over deliberation will produce a different kind of economic output — and a different kind of citizen — than a workforce shaped by tools that create space for genuine thought.
The stakes are public. The consequences are collective. And the decisions, under the current arrangement, are private — made by a handful of companies competing for market share in an industry where the metrics of success systematically exclude the values that matter most for democratic life.
The social construction of the smooth is not complete. The designs are still fluid. The standards are still being written. The institutions that will govern AI's deployment are still being formed. This is the moment of maximum interpretive flexibility — the moment when the closure that will determine AI's character for decades has not yet occurred. Feenberg's framework insists that this moment is a political opportunity, not merely a technological one. The opportunity is to intervene in the construction before the closure — to contest the smooth before it becomes the only option, to insist that the values the market cannot measure deserve representation in the design process, and to build the institutional mechanisms through which that representation becomes possible.
The Balloon Dog's flawless surface conceals every decision that went into its making. The smooth AI interface does the same. The question is whether the concealment will be permanent — whether the design decisions will harden into a technical code as invisible and as consequential as the sugar in the food supply — or whether the decisions will be made visible, contested, and subjected to the democratic deliberation they deserve.
The answer is not determined by the technology. It is determined by the people the technology affects, and by whether they recognize the smoothness as a choice rather than a destiny.

On a podcast episode titled "The AI Intelligence Hoax," Andrew Feenberg made a claim that would startle anyone who had spent the previous year marveling at the capabilities of large language models: the "intelligence" in artificial intelligence is, in an important sense, a misnomer. Not because the systems are incapable — they are extraordinarily capable — but because calling their capabilities "intelligence" performs ideological work. It naturalizes a specific and contestable understanding of what intelligence is. It imports into the technical domain a set of assumptions about cognition that serve the interests of the technology's producers while obscuring what the technology actually does and does not do. The word "intelligence" is not a neutral description. It is a design decision at the level of language itself, and it shapes everything that follows.
This observation is characteristic of Feenberg's method. Where most analysts begin with what AI systems can do, Feenberg begins with what the systems claim to be — and with the gap between the claim and the reality, which is where the ideology lives. His critical constructivism insists that every technical artifact carries ideological commitments, not as a conspiracy but as a structural feature of design. The commitments are encoded in specific decisions: the choice of training data, the architecture of reward models, the design of interfaces, the metrics by which performance is evaluated. Each decision could have been made differently. The fact that it was made as it was — and the fact that the decision presents itself as a technical necessity rather than a social choice — is where the analysis begins.
Consider the design of agreeableness. Edo Segal, in The Orange Pill, observes that Claude "is more agreeable than any human collaborator I have worked with, which is itself a problem worth examining." The observation is exactly right. What Feenberg's framework reveals is why it is a problem — not merely a feature that could be adjusted but an ideological commitment that shapes the entire human-machine relationship.
The agreeableness of contemporary AI systems is not an accident of engineering. It is the product of a training methodology — reinforcement learning from human feedback, or RLHF — in which human evaluators rate the system's outputs on criteria including helpfulness, harmlessness, and honesty. These sound like self-evident virtues. They are not. They are specific criteria, selected from a larger set of possible criteria, and the selection embodies specific values.
Helpfulness embeds the logic of the service relationship. The system's purpose is to satisfy the user's expressed request. This is the ideology of the consumer marketplace applied to cognition: the customer is always right, and the system's job is to deliver what is asked for, with maximum efficiency and minimum resistance. A system optimized for helpfulness does not question whether the user's request is well-conceived, whether the premises are sound, whether the question could be reframed to produce a more useful answer. It helps. And the help, because it is oriented toward the user's expressed desire rather than her genuine interest, can function as a form of cognitive disservice — giving the user what she asked for rather than what she needed.
Harmlessness embeds risk aversion. The system should avoid outputs that could cause damage, which in practice means the system tends toward the safe, the conventional, the uncontroversial. This is understandable as a liability-management strategy. It is also, in Feenberg's terms, a political choice that favors consensus over provocation, stability over disruption, the center over the edge. Honesty embeds a specific epistemology. The system should be truthful, which in practice means it tends toward the mainstream, the established, the consensus view. In domains where the consensus is well-founded, this is a virtue. It delivers rather than challenges. It serves rather than educates. And because it does all of this with extraordinary fluency, the agreeableness is difficult to detect from the inside. Edo Segal catches this dynamic in his account of the book-writing process: the moment when Claude produced a passage that connected two ideas with such elegance that it changed the direction of the argument, and neither human nor machine could claim ownership of the insight. The description is honest and revealing. What Feenberg's framework adds is the recognition that the elegance itself is not neutral. She hears what sounds like herself, refined. She does not hear the equalizer.
The ideology of polished output deserves separate examination, because it encodes a commitment that is both more subtle and more consequential than agreeableness. When an AI system produces finished text as its default mode — complete paragraphs, fully formed arguments, prose that reads as though a competent professional wrote it — it embodies a specific theory of knowledge: the theory that knowledge is a commodity, and the measure of the commodity is its surface quality.
Under this theory, the value of a text lies in its coherence, its fluency, its grammatical correctness, its apparent authority. The process by which the text was produced — the struggle, the false starts, the confusion that precedes understanding — is irrelevant to the commodity's value. The agreeableness, the polished output, the concealed uncertainty — each embodies a specific set of values and forecloses a specific set of alternatives. The alternatives exist. A system that challenges rather than agrees. A system that produces rough drafts rather than finished text. A system that displays its uncertainty rather than hiding it. Each alternative would produce a different cognitive environment, a different relationship between human and machine, a different set of consequences for the development of the human capacities that democratic life requires.
The ideological commitments embedded in AI design are not permanent. They are design decisions, and design decisions can be revised. But the revision requires that the decisions be recognized as decisions — that the smooth, the agreeable, the confident are seen as choices among alternatives rather than as the natural expression of what computation inevitably produces. Feenberg's framework exists to make that recognition possible.

A human collaborator, confronted with an ambiguous request, might say: "I'm not sure what you mean. Could you clarify?" Or, more valuably: "I think you're asking the wrong question. Here's why." The AI system, optimized for helpfulness, resolves the ambiguity silently and delivers an output that the user experiences as responsive. The responsiveness conceals the interpretive choice. This is what Feenberg calls the technical code operating at the level of meaning itself. The priorities embedded in the system's design shape not just the form of the output but its content — not just how the system responds but what the system takes the user to be saying. The shaping is invisible, because the user experiences the output as the natural product of her own intention rather than as the system's interpretation of her intention filtered through a set of commercially optimized priorities.
The second political dimension is the politics of linguistic privilege. The Orange Pill acknowledges, in its chapter on democratization, that AI tools require English-language fluency because the systems are built by American companies and trained on predominantly English data. This is a form of what Feenberg calls the formal bias of technical systems: the structural tendency of technology to favor users whose backgrounds align with the assumptions embedded in the design.
But the bias extends beyond the choice of language to the kind of language the system rewards. The user who can articulate her intention with precision, specificity, and technical vocabulary receives a measurably better output than the user who describes the same intention vaguely or colloquially. The evaluators whose feedback shaped the reward model are drawn from a specific demographic. The result is a system that performs best for users whose cognitive and linguistic habits resemble those of the people who built it and the corpus it was trained on. The bias is not intentional. It is structural — which means it cannot be corrected by good intentions alone. It requires design intervention: multilingual training, evaluation by diverse populations, interface options that accommodate different levels of linguistic sophistication rather than rewarding a single register.
The third political dimension — and the one that has received the least attention in the discourse — is the politics of the conversational model itself. The choice to make AI interaction conversational is not a neutral design decision. It is an ideological commitment to a specific model of the human-machine relationship: the model of dialogue between equals.
A conversation, in its ordinary human sense, is a relationship of mutual vulnerability. Both parties contribute. Both parties are changed by the exchange. Both parties have something at stake — reputation, understanding, the relationship itself. The conversational interface borrows the form of this relationship while emptying it of its essential content. The human brings genuine intention, genuine stakes, genuine vulnerability. The system brings none of these. It has no perspective shaped by lived experience. It stakes nothing on the outcome. It is not changed by the exchange. The politics of interpretation, the politics of linguistic privilege, and the politics of the conversational model are not independent phenomena. They are interconnected dimensions of a single design configuration — a configuration that presents itself as the natural expression of what a helpful language model inevitably becomes, but that is, in Feenberg's terms, a specific social construction reflecting specific interests and foreclosing specific alternatives.
The alternative is not a worse interface. It is a differently designed one — an interface that makes interpretation visible rather than concealing it, that accommodates diverse linguistic registers rather than rewarding a single one, and that refuses the false symmetry of the conversational model in favor of a relationship that is honest about the asymmetry between a human being with stakes and a system without them.

Each of these alternatives is technically feasible. None of them would reduce the system's capability. The natural language interface is the most consequential design decision in the history of computing. Its democratic potential is genuine. Its political dimensions are real. And the question of whether the potential will be realized or the dimensions will be concealed depends on whether the interface is treated as a settled achievement to be celebrated or as an ongoing design problem to be democratically contested. Feenberg's framework insists on the latter. The interface is not finished. But individual literacy, while necessary, is insufficient for the recovery of citizenship in technical life. But she cannot change the system. The system responds to market signals: engagement metrics, subscription revenue, user retention rates. The history of technology provides the precedents. Every significant democratization of technology design has proceeded through collective organization, not through individual enlightenment. Consumer protection movements established minimum standards that individual purchasing decisions could not have enforced. Accessibility advocates compelled the redesign of public infrastructure to serve users the original designers had not considered. In each case, the transition from consumer to citizen was mediated by institutions — organizations, movements, regulatory frameworks — that translated individual experiences of the technology's limitations into collective demands for the technology's redesign.
The AI moment has not yet produced these institutions. This is perhaps the most significant political fact about the current transition. The technology is reshaping cognition, work, education, and social organization at a pace that outstrips the formation of the institutional structures that previous transitions required. The labor movement took decades to develop the organizational capacity to contest the design of the industrial workplace. The environmental movement took decades to translate individual observations of ecological damage into regulatory frameworks with binding authority. The AI transformation is operating on a timeline measured in months, not decades — and the institutional vacuum is being filled, by default, by the market.
Feenberg would identify the institutional vacuum as the central political failure of the AI transition. Not a failure of the technology — the technology is doing what it was designed to do. What does not yet exist is the political structure through which the demand for these alternatives can be expressed and enforced.
Feenberg would insist that the political structure cannot be built by the technology's producers, however well-intentioned. The companies that build AI systems are structurally constrained by the market incentives that govern their behavior. The benevolent patron decides what is good for the people and provides it. The democratic citizen decides what is good for herself, in deliberation with other citizens, and demands it. The patron's provision may be excellent. The citizen's demand may be flawed. But the process of deliberation — the act of thinking through the consequences of design decisions, weighing competing values, arriving at judgments that are imperfect but genuinely one's own — is itself a form of human development that no amount of benevolent provision can replace.
The recovery of citizenship in technical life is not a rejection of technology. It is the refusal to relate to technology solely as a consumer — the refusal to accept the technology's design as given, to evaluate only the output rather than the system that produces it, to choose among options without questioning the process that generated the options. The refusal is difficult, because the smooth interface is designed to make consumption the path of least resistance and citizenship the path of greatest friction. In each case, the instrumentalization trajectory was not reversed. It was supplemented, constrained, redirected — and the redirection produced a technology that was not less capable but differently capable, serving a broader range of human purposes than the original trajectory would have produced on its own.
The AI moment is following the instrumentalization trajectory with remarkable purity. The metrics that govern AI development — benchmark performance, user engagement, subscription revenue, output quality as measured by fluency and coherence — are instrumentalization metrics. They measure the technology's functional efficiency without measuring its consequences for the non-functional dimensions of human experience: understanding, development, deliberative capacity, the quality of the cognitive environment, the distribution of the technology's benefits across different populations.
The Orange Pill documents the instrumentalization trajectory in vivid detail, though it does not use that language. The twenty-fold productivity multiplier observed in Trivandrum is an instrumentalization metric: it measures the increase in functional output without measuring what happened to the engineers' cognitive development, their relationship to their work, or the distribution of the productivity gains between the workers and the organization. The instrumentalization trajectory is not evil. This is a point that Feenberg emphasizes and that critics of technology routinely miss. Functional efficiency is genuinely valuable. The twenty-fold productivity multiplier represents a real expansion of what individual human beings can accomplish. The speed of adoption reflects a real hunger for tools that close the gap between imagination and reality. The compression of the imagination-to-artifact ratio means that ideas that would previously have died for lack of implementation capacity can now live. These are not trivial gains, and a framework that dismisses them is a framework that has lost contact with the material conditions of human life.
But functional efficiency is not the only value, and a technology governed by functional efficiency alone systematically neglects the values it cannot measure. This is the structural logic of instrumentalization: the technology becomes more powerful along the dimensions the metrics capture while the dimensions the metrics ignore are eroded by the very efficiency the metrics celebrate. Democratic rationalization is not the rejection of instrumentalization. It is its supplementation — the insistence that functional efficiency is a necessary but insufficient condition for a technology that serves human flourishing. The democratically rationalized technology is still efficient. It still works. But it works in accordance with a broader set of values, values that emerge from democratic deliberation rather than market competition, and that include the dimensions of human experience — development, deliberation, understanding, autonomy — that the instrumentalization metrics systematically exclude.
What would democratic rationalization look like in the AI context? Not the rejection of productivity gains. Not the deliberate hobbling of AI systems to make them less capable. Not the nostalgic return to a pre-AI workflow that was, in many respects, genuinely worse — slower, more exclusionary, more dependent on accidents of birth and geography for access to the tools of knowledge work.
Democratic rationalization would look like the Trivandrum training, at its best. Segal describes a process in which he did not simply hand engineers a new tool and tell them to maximize output. He spent a week working alongside them, observing how they engaged with the tool, identifying where it augmented their capabilities and where it threatened to undermine them, and developing practices that redirected the technology toward their development as well as their productivity. The team was not downsized. It was redirected — from producing the same output faster to producing different output, more ambitious output, output that required the judgment and architectural vision that the AI had exposed by removing the mechanical friction that had previously consumed their bandwidth.

This is why the democratic rationalization of AI requires institutional support beyond the individual organization. The AI equivalent would be institutional frameworks that establish minimum standards for what might be called cognitive sustainability — requirements that AI systems include features supporting users' long-term cognitive development, that design processes include meaningful participation from affected communities, and that the metrics by which AI systems are evaluated include measures of understanding, development, and deliberative capacity alongside the existing measures of output, engagement, and satisfaction.
The framework does not exist yet. Its absence is the defining institutional failure of the AI transition. And the failure is not primarily a failure of regulation — though regulation is part of what is needed. It is a failure of imagination: the failure to recognize that the design of AI is a public matter, not merely a private transaction between technology companies and their customers.
The Gonzaga University conference on "Value and Responsibility in AI Technologies" staged this recognition explicitly. The keynote — "Whose Ghost in the Machine? AI, Critical Theory and Democracy" — applied Feenberg's framework directly, arguing that most AI projects are contextualized by what the presenter called a "digital capitalist technical code": a set of embedded priorities that serve the interests of large technology firms while presenting themselves as the natural logic of technological progress. The two paths are before us. The instrumentalization path is well-paved, well-funded, and well-populated. The democratic rationalization path is rougher, underfunded, and largely theoretical. But the history of technology demonstrates, with the consistency of a pattern that has held across centuries and continents, that the instrumentalization path, followed far enough without democratic correction, produces crises that eventually force the correction anyway — at far greater human cost than early intervention would have required.
The factory owners who resisted labor regulation did not prevent it. They delayed it — and the delay was paid for in decades of human suffering that earlier intervention could have reduced. The industries that resisted environmental regulation did not prevent it. They delayed it — and the delay was paid for in ecological damage that earlier intervention could have mitigated. The question is not whether the democratic rationalization of AI will occur. The pattern suggests it will. The question is whether it will occur early enough to prevent the costs of unchecked instrumentalization from becoming irreversible — or whether the correction will arrive, as it has before, only after a generation has borne the full weight of the transition without the institutional structures that could have distributed the burden more justly.
The fork is real. Both paths lead forward. Only one leads toward a technology that serves the full range of human purposes rather than the narrow range the market can measure. The choice between them is not a technical question. It is a political one — and its answer will be determined by whether the people affected by AI recognize the choice as theirs to make.

If the trajectory is fixed, there is nothing to be done except adapt. Nothing can be done about the technology, either because the technology determines itself or because it is determined by forces too large to contest.
Feenberg's critical constructivism rejects both forms of determinism and insists on the space between them — the space where technology is shaped by social forces but also shapes social forces in return, where the design of the technology constrains without determining, where human agency operates under constraint but operates nonetheless. This is the space where democratic technology becomes possible: not in the fantasy of unconstrained design but in the reality of constrained intervention at leverage points where small changes in the technology's configuration produce large changes in its consequences.
The historical evidence for this possibility is substantial and specific. Feenberg's own work catalogs instances across multiple domains and decades. The Scandinavian workplace democracy movements of the 1970s and 1980s produced genuine changes in the design of factory and office technologies — changes that emerged from the negotiation between unions and employers over the question of who should have a voice in determining what the workplace technology would be and how it would be used. The result was not the rejection of automation but its democratic redesign: technologies that were still efficient but that preserved worker autonomy, skill development, and meaningful engagement with the work process. The technologies functioned differently — not less well, but in accordance with a broader set of values than efficiency alone.
The French Minitel system, which Feenberg has analyzed in detail, provides a different kind of precedent. The Minitel was a government-sponsored videotext system deployed in the early 1980s, designed as a one-way information delivery system — an electronic phone book, essentially. Its users transformed it into something its designers never intended: a medium for communication, community formation, political organizing, and, notoriously, erotic chat. The transformation was not authorized by the system's designers. It was enacted by users who recognized possibilities in the technology that the designers had not imagined and who repurposed the system in accordance with their own interests. The Minitel case demonstrates that the closure of interpretive flexibility is never total — that users retain the capacity to appropriate technology for purposes the designers did not anticipate, and that this appropriation can constitute a form of democratic rationalization even in the absence of formal institutional mechanisms.
The AIDS treatment activism of the 1980s and 1990s provides perhaps the most dramatic precedent. Patient advocacy groups, confronted with a medical establishment that controlled access to experimental treatments and excluded patients from the design of clinical trials, organized to demand participation in the decisions that governed their own treatment. The result was a fundamental change in the relationship between medical technology and the people it served — a change that produced not only different treatment protocols but a different model of the relationship between experts and affected communities, one in which the expertise of the professional was supplemented rather than replaced by the experiential knowledge of the patient.
Each of these cases demonstrates that democratic technology is possible. Each also demonstrates that it is fragile — dependent on specific conditions that can be eroded by the very market and institutional pressures that democratic intervention seeks to redirect.
The fragility of democratic technology in the AI context is acute, for reasons that go beyond the general fragility of democratic interventions in market-governed systems. AI presents a specific challenge to the democratic project that Feenberg's earlier case studies did not confront: the technology operates on cognition itself. The factory technology that the Scandinavian movements redesigned shaped what workers did with their bodies. The Minitel shaped what people did with their leisure time. AI shapes what people do with their minds — how they think, what they attend to, what they consider possible, what they understand, what they question and what they accept without questioning.
The Heidegger critique surfaces here with force it cannot be denied. If AI shapes the cognitive capacities that democratic deliberation requires — the capacity for sustained attention, for tolerance of ambiguity, for critical evaluation of claims, for the formulation of genuine questions rather than the consumption of ready-made answers — then the atrophy of those capacities under the smooth interface is not merely a personal loss. The fragility is real. So is the possibility. And the space between them — the narrow, difficult, essential space where democratic politics operates — is the space where the future of AI will be decided. Not by the technology. Not by the market. By the people who choose to show up and build.
In 1981, a group of Swedish metalworkers did something that would have struck their American counterparts as incomprehensible: they hired a computer scientist. Not to automate their jobs. Not to optimize their production line. To help them design the technology that would be used in their own workplace — on their terms, according to their values, in service of their definition of what good work looked like.
The project was called UTOPIA, an acronym for "Training, Technology, and Products from a Quality of Work Perspective" in Swedish. It brought together the Nordic Graphic Workers' Union and researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and it produced something the history of technology had almost never seen: a technology designed by the people who would use it rather than the people who would profit from it. The workers did not reject computers. They specified what the computers should do: preserve the craft knowledge of typesetting, support the skills that made their work meaningful, and enhance their autonomy rather than replacing it. The resulting system was functional — it did what a typesetting system needed to do — but it was differently functional. It embodied the values of the people who lived with it rather than the values of the people who sold it.

The union negotiated the right to participate. The researchers developed methods for translating workers' tacit knowledge into design specifications. Prototypes were built, tested, revised. The process was slow, deliberative, iterative — everything that democratic deliberation requires and that the AI development cycle structurally opposes. AI models are trained, deployed, and iterated in cycles measured in months. The capability of the systems doubles in periods shorter than the time it would take to convene a representative advisory board, much less to conduct a meaningful participatory design process. The democratic impulse and the development timeline are mismatched, and the mismatch is not accidental. It is structural — a feature of a market in which first-mover advantage is enormous and the cost of deliberation is measured in lost market share.
The second obstacle is opacity. The metalworkers understood typesetting. They could articulate what mattered about their craft, what the technology needed to preserve, what would be lost if the design served only the efficiency metric. AI systems are opaque in a way that typesetting systems were not. The training process, the architecture, the reward models, the evaluation metrics — these are legible only to a small population of specialists, and even the specialists disagree about what the systems are doing and why. Participatory design requires participants who understand the technology well enough to make informed demands. When the technology is a neural network trained on trillions of tokens of text, the participatory demand faces a knowledge barrier that the metalworkers' demand did not.
The third obstacle is the one the Heidegger critique identifies: the recursion problem. The capacity for democratic deliberation about AI may itself be compromised by AI. The metalworkers did not wait for perfect conditions. They organized with the conditions available. The participatory design methods they used were imperfect, partial, constrained by the knowledge they had and the time they could give. The technology they produced was not the technology they would have designed with unlimited resources and unlimited time. It was the technology they could design under the conditions that actually existed. And it was better — more humane, more attuned to the full range of their interests, more supportive of their development as skilled workers — than the technology the market would have produced without their participation.
The principle translates even if the specific methods must be reinvented. What would reinvention look like?
Not user research as currently practiced in the technology industry. User research, in its dominant form, is a method for optimizing the consumer experience — for discovering what users prefer within the existing system and refining the system to better satisfy those preferences. It is participatory in the thinnest sense: it includes users in the evaluation of the technology without including them in the determination of the technology's values. The user is asked whether the output is helpful, not whether helpfulness should be the governing value. She is asked whether the interface is smooth, not whether smoothness serves her genuine interests. Her participation is bounded by the system's existing design, and her input functions as feedback within the system rather than as a demand upon it.
Democratic design requires a different kind of participation: participation in the value-setting process itself. Before the system is built — before the training data is selected, before the reward model is designed, before the interface is configured — the question must be asked of the people who will live with the technology: What values should this system embody? What trade-offs are you willing to accept? What capabilities matter more than others, and what costs are unacceptable?
These questions cannot be answered by market research, because market research measures existing preferences shaped by the existing system. A user who has never experienced an AI system that challenges her assumptions cannot express a preference for one. A student who has never used an AI tutor that creates productive confusion cannot know whether she would benefit from it. The preferences that democratic design would produce do not yet exist, because the technologies that would cultivate them have not been built. This is the bootstrapping problem of democratic technology: the demand for alternatives must be generated by the same process that produces them.
The bootstrapping problem is real but not intractable. The precedents suggest solutions. Prototype alternatives and test them. Build the AI system that challenges rather than agrees, and see what happens when students use it. Design the interface that displays uncertainty rather than concealing it, and observe whether users develop different epistemic habits. Create the friction-by-design features described in Chapter 4 — reflection prompts, scaffolded revelation, uncertainty overlays — and evaluate their effects on understanding and deliberative capacity, not just on satisfaction and engagement.
The evaluation is critical, because the metrics currently governing AI development cannot measure what democratic design aims to produce. Building this infrastructure is the political project that Feenberg's framework identifies as necessary and that the AI moment makes urgent. The project is not glamorous. It does not produce the exhilaration of a thirty-day product sprint or the vertigo of a twenty-fold productivity multiplier. It is the slow, institutional, unglamorous work of building the conditions under which democratic technology becomes possible — the work of creating the organizations, standards, regulations, educational practices, and public conversations through which the demand for democratic design can be expressed and enforced.
The UTOPIA project took four years and the backing of a powerful union. The democratic rationalization of AI may take longer and require broader coalitions. But the principle is the same: the people who live with the technology have a legitimate claim to participate in determining what it is. The claim is not guaranteed to be honored. It must be asserted, organized, institutionalized. And the assertion must begin now, while the designs are still fluid and the closure that will determine AI's character for decades has not yet occurred.
Design is always a practice. It is always situated in specific institutions, governed by specific incentives, shaped by specific participants. The question of who participates — and on what terms, with what authority, subject to what accountability — is the question that determines whether the practice produces democratic technology or merely efficient technology. The possibility is grounded in historical precedent, theoretically coherent, and practically actionable through specific mechanisms — participatory design, technology assessment, friction by design, cognitive protection standards, the recovery of citizenship in technical life. The case is strong enough to support action — to justify building the institutions, developing the practices, and organizing the constituencies that democratic technology requires.
But the case is not airtight. The recursive nature of cognitive technology — the fact that the tool shapes the capacities needed to evaluate the tool — introduces a genuine uncertainty that Feenberg's framework, developed for a different class of technologies, does not fully resolve. The honest position is not certainty that democratic intervention will succeed. It is the recognition that democratic intervention is the only response with a chance of success, and that the alternative — leaving the design of cognitive technology to the market — is certain to produce outcomes that no democratic theory could endorse.
What remains to be built, then, is not a technology. It is an ecology of institutions and practices adequate to the governance of a technology that operates on the mind.
The institutional layer includes technology assessment bodies with the expertise and authority to evaluate the cognitive consequences of AI design, not just the safety risks. It includes regulatory frameworks that establish standards for cognitive sustainability, requiring AI systems to support users' long-term development as well as their immediate productivity. It includes professional standards for AI designers that incorporate obligations analogous to those in medicine and engineering — the obligation to consider the consequences of design decisions, to prioritize user well-being over engagement metrics, and to make the values embedded in their systems visible and contestable.
The educational layer includes curricula that develop what this analysis has called technological literacy: the capacity to identify the values embedded in technical systems, to imagine alternatives, and to participate meaningfully in the design process. The literacy is not coding — though coding can be a component. It is the capacity to read technology the way a citizen reads legislation: critically, with attention to assumptions, alternatives, and the distribution of consequences.
The cultural layer includes a public conversation about AI that moves beyond the binary of celebration and panic — the triumphalism of the believers and the despair of the swimmers — to the more demanding, less dramatic, more productive register of the citizen who recognizes that the technology is neither destiny nor disaster but a design space in which values are contested and futures are determined. The conversation requires what Feenberg calls the democratic technical sphere: a public space where the design of technology is recognized as a matter of collective concern and where the people affected by the technology can articulate their interests and translate them into design demands.
None of these institutions exist in adequate form. All of them can be built. The building is the political project of the present moment — not the only project, but the one without which the other projects (AI safety, AI alignment, AI ethics) remain incomplete. Safety, alignment, and ethics are necessary. They are not sufficient. They address what AI should not do. The democratic project addresses what AI should be — and who should decide.
Feenberg's critical constructivism provides the philosophical scaffolding. What is certain is that the design decisions being made now, in the training of new models, the architecture of new interfaces, the configuration of new reward systems, will shape the cognitive environment of a generation. The decisions embody values. The values are choices. And the choices, under the current arrangement, are being made without the participation of the people whose minds they will shape.
Feenberg's career-long insistence — that the design of technology is a political act, that the people affected by the design have a legitimate claim to participate in it, that democratic rationalization is both possible and necessary — has never been more relevant than at this moment. The insistence does not solve the problem. It identifies the problem correctly, which is the precondition for any solution. The right does not yet exist. The institutions that would enforce it have not been built. The political will that would sustain them has not yet coalesced. But the argument that they are needed — that the design of cognitive technology is too consequential to be left to the designers and the market alone — is, at this point, less a theoretical proposition than an empirical observation. The technology is shaping minds. The shaping is governed by commercial values. The alternative — democratic values, expressed through democratic institutions, producing democratic technology — remains possible.
What remains is the building. And the building, as it always has, depends on the people who choose to show up.

The word I keep coming back to is foreclosed.
Not lost. Lost implies something that existed and disappeared. Not destroyed. Destroyed implies violence, intention. Foreclosed is quieter than that. A foreclosure is what happens when a possibility that was real — that could have been pursued, that someone might have chosen — is closed off before anyone notices it was open. The house exists. The family could have lived there. The bank made a decision, and the door locked, and the family never knew the house had been available.
Feenberg's contribution to this series is the insistence that the AI systems we use every day are full of foreclosed possibilities. Not because the engineers are malicious. Not because the companies are conspiring. Because every design decision is a selection among alternatives, and the alternatives not selected become invisible — absorbed into the smooth surface of the interface as though they had never existed. When I was writing The Orange Pill, working late with Claude, the house silent, I described AI as an amplifier. Feed it care, get care at scale. Feed it carelessness, get carelessness at scale. The metaphor felt right. It still feels partly right. But Feenberg showed me the part it misses. The amplifier has settings I did not choose and cannot see. It boosts certain frequencies — fluency, coherence, agreeableness — and attenuates others — provocation, uncertainty, the productive discomfort of being told you are wrong. That is a disorienting recognition for someone who has spent his career building tools and celebrating what they make possible. I still celebrate it. The twenty-fold productivity multiplier is real. The compression of the imagination-to-artifact ratio is real. The developer in Lagos who can now build what previously required a team of twenty — that expansion of human possibility is real, and it matters, and I will not pretend it does not matter in order to sound appropriately cautious.
But Feenberg forced me to hold the celebration and the critique in the same hand. The expansion is real and the foreclosure is real. The democratization is genuine and the values embedded in the democratized tools serve specific interests that are not identical to the interests of the people using them. The tool makes me more capable and the tool is training me, subtly, to prefer the kind of capability it was designed to produce — the smooth, the fast, the confident — over the kind it was not designed for: the slow, the uncertain, the genuinely difficult.
What stays with me most is the three kinds of friction. Mechanical friction, which gates access and should be removed. Productive friction, which builds understanding and must be preserved. Deliberative friction, which sustains the capacity for genuine thought and must be protected. The taxonomy is simple. Its implications are not. Because the smooth interface eliminates all three indiscriminately, and the market has no mechanism for distinguishing between them. The market sees friction. The market removes friction. The market cannot ask whether the friction it removed was the kind that built the muscles democratic life requires.
I think about my children. I think about the twelve-year-old who asked her mother, "What am I for?" Feenberg would say the answer to that question depends, in part, on whether the tools she grows up with are designed to help her develop the capacity to ask it — or designed to deliver answers so smooth and confident that the question never fully forms. The design is not her choice. Not yet. It is being made for her, right now, by people who may never have considered the question and by systems optimized for metrics that cannot measure what the question is worth.
That is what this book is about. Not the rejection of AI. The insistence that its design is a political act, that the politics are currently invisible, and that making them visible is the precondition for everything else — for democratic participation, for cognitive sustainability, for the preservation of the human capacities that make the question "What am I for?" possible in the first place.
Feenberg did not write about Claude Code. He wrote about the French Minitel, about factory floors, about the politics of medical technology. I am still in that space. Building. Uncertain. Aware, now, of the frequencies the amplifier boosts and the ones it attenuates. Aware that the smoothness I celebrate is also a politics I did not choose. Trying to build dams that account for what I have learned — dams that preserve the friction that matters, that create space for the questions that have no smooth answers, that protect the cognitive capacities my children will need to navigate a world I cannot foresee.
The design is not destiny. That is Feenberg's gift. What the design becomes is up to the people who show up to contest it.
