The body keeps score. That phrase belongs to a different book about a different kind of trauma, but it is the phrase that surfaced when I tried to articulate what Alva Noë's philosophy did to my understanding of the past year.

I had been measuring everything in outputs. Lines of code shipped. Products launched. Chapters written. The twenty-fold productivity multiplier I describe in *The Orange Pill*. The thirty-day sprint to CES. The ten-hour flight where I drafted a hundred-and-eighty-seven pages. Every metric pointed upward. Every metric confirmed that the tools were working, that the collaboration with Claude was producing something real, that the imagination-to-artifact ratio had collapsed to the width of a conversation.

And then I read Noë, and he asked a question none of my metrics could answer: What happened to your hands?

Not metaphorically. Literally. What happened to the specific, physical, bodily knowledge that used to accumulate when building was hard? When writing assembly code meant feeling the architecture of the processor through your fingertips? When debugging meant hours of friction that deposited understanding into the body the way silt deposits into a riverbed?

I had been celebrating the removal of that friction. Noë made me see what I had removed along with it.

His argument is not that AI is bad. He has spoken at OpenAI. He engages with the technology seriously. His argument is more precise and more uncomfortable: consciousness is not a program running inside your skull. It is something you do — an activity of your whole body, in ongoing engagement with a world that pushes back. The pushing back is not an obstacle to understanding. It is where understanding lives. Remove the resistance, and you do not get faster thinking. You get a different phenomenon altogether — fluent output without the embodied comprehension that makes output meaningful.

This matters for everyone navigating the AI transition, not just philosophers. It matters for the engineer whose architectural intuition was built through years of physical struggle with systems that refused to cooperate. It matters for the student whose deepest learning happened in the bodily discomfort of not-knowing. It matters for the parent wondering what cognitive capacities their children will develop — or fail to develop — in a world where friction is treated as a bug.

It is the assumption that consciousness is a species of information processing — that the brain is a kind of computer, that thinking is a kind of computation, and that a sufficiently powerful computer will therefore think. This assumption has dominated cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and artificial intelligence research for more than half a century. It informs the architecture of neural networks, the ambitions of AI laboratories, the popular imagination of what it would mean for a machine to "think." And it is, in the considered judgment of Alva Noë, profoundly wrong — wrong not in its details but in its foundations, wrong in a way that makes nearly everything built on top of it unreliable.

Noë's position, developed across decades of work at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and the phenomenological tradition running from Husserl through Merleau-Ponty, constitutes one of the most rigorous philosophical challenges to the computational orthodoxy shaping the technology industry's self-understanding. Where the computationalist sees consciousness as a program running on the hardware of the brain, Noë sees something categorically different: consciousness as a skilled activity, an achievement of the whole organism in its dynamic, ongoing engagement with an environment that is not merely observed but actively enacted. The difference is not one of emphasis. It is a difference of kind. And its implications for the cultural phenomenon Edo Segal describes in The Orange Pill — the arrival of large language models that process natural language with startling fluency — are more far-reaching than even that book's most philosophical chapters fully reckon with.

"You are not your brain." Noë has said this so many times, in so many contexts, that it has become something like a philosophical slogan. But slogans can obscure the arguments behind them, and Noë's argument deserves to be stated with the precision it has earned. The claim is not that the brain is unimportant. The brain is necessary for consciousness in the same way that an engine is necessary for driving. But an engine does not drive. Driving is an activity that requires an engine, a vehicle, a road, a driver with intentions, traffic laws, weather conditions, and the ongoing, dynamic coordination of all of these in real time. Remove any of them and driving does not become a lesser version of itself. It ceases to be driving at all. Consciousness is the same kind of thing. It is not a state produced inside the skull. It is an activity performed by the whole organism — a bodied creature, situated in a world, engaged in the ongoing work of making sense of that world through perception and action.

This is the enactive approach, and its central insight can be illustrated with an example that reveals how deeply the computational assumption has distorted our understanding of something as basic as seeing. Consider what happens when a person perceives a red apple. The standard computational account goes roughly like this: light of a certain wavelength reflects off the surface, enters the eye, stimulates photoreceptors on the retina, which transduce the light into electrical signals that travel to the visual cortex, where they are processed through increasingly complex operations until a representation of "red apple" is constructed in the brain. On this view, the redness is in the representation. It is a computational product. The brain built it.

Noë's account is fundamentally different. On the enactive view, the redness of the apple is not a representation constructed inside the head. It is a mode of interaction between the perceiver and the apple — a skilled engagement with the way surfaces reflect light under varying conditions of illumination and viewing angle. To see the apple as red is to possess practical knowledge of how its appearance will change as you move around it, as the lighting shifts, as the background alters. This is sensorimotor knowledge — knowledge constituted by the perceiver's capacity for action, not by a static computational state. The perceiver does not construct a model of the apple and then inspect it. The perceiver actively explores the apple through a temporally extended process of looking, attending, and moving that is inseparable from the perceiver's embodied situation in the world. The seeing is not something the brain does to the perceiver. The seeing is something the perceiver does with the brain, the body, the eyes, the hands, the world.

The evidence supporting this account is not merely philosophical. Change blindness — the well-documented failure of perceivers to notice dramatic alterations in a visual scene when those alterations occur during a saccade or other interruption — is nearly inexplicable on the computational model, which predicts that the brain's internal representation should register the change. But it is exactly what the enactive approach predicts: the perceiver attends to features relevant to ongoing purposes and does not construct a comprehensive internal model of the scene. Sensory substitution research tells the same story. Blind users of devices that translate visual information into tactile patterns on the skin report that their experience shifts over time — from feeling buzzing on the skin to something more like perceiving objects in space. The input has not changed. What changed was the user's skill in employing the input as a medium for active exploration. Perception, as Noë argues, is not determined by input. It is determined by the perceiver's embodied skill in using whatever input is available.

Now consider what this means for the question of artificial intelligence. If consciousness were indeed a form of computation — if seeing red were a matter of constructing the right internal representation — then there would be no principled reason why a computer that constructed the same representation could not, in some meaningful sense, see red. The gap between human consciousness and machine processing would be technical: a matter of getting the computation right. But if seeing red is a mode of embodied interaction, a skilled activity requiring a body capable of moving through and exploring a world of colored surfaces, then no amount of computational sophistication can produce the experience in a system that lacks a body and a world. The gap is not technical. It is ontological. It is the same kind of gap that separates a simulation of water from actual water. You cannot get wet in a simulation, regardless of its resolution.

The Orange Pill approaches this territory with more intellectual honesty than most popular writing about AI. Its author notes, in the Prologue, that when he sat down with Claude he was "not talking to a consciousness in any sense Uri would recognize as rigorous." The qualification matters. It distinguishes the book from the breathless faction that claims the machines are thinking and from the dismissive faction that calls them mere statistical parrots. Segal occupies the more honest position: acknowledging that something remarkable is happening in human-AI interaction without making metaphysically extravagant claims about what that something is.

Yet the book's larger framework risks dissolving the distinction that its author is careful to maintain in particular moments. When The Orange Pill describes intelligence as a "river" flowing from hydrogen atoms through biological evolution to human consciousness to artificial computation, when it traces a lineage across 13.8 billion years as though these were different sections of a single current, it constructs an architecture that makes the qualitative distinction between processing and engagement appear to be merely quantitative — a wider channel versus a narrower one. This is the precise move that Noë's enactivism contests. Calling hydrogen bonding and a twelve-year-old's existential question two expressions of the same "intelligence" creates a false continuity. It produces a smooth conceptual surface that conceals the places where the nature of the phenomenon genuinely changes. The intelligence that organizes atoms into crystals is not the same kind of thing as the intelligence that allows a human being to wonder about the atoms. Using the same word for both is not unification. It is equivocation.

Noë's most recent and sharpest articulation of this challenge appeared in his 2024 essay for Aeon, titled "Can Computers Think? No. They Can't Actually Do Anything." The provocation is not rhetorical carelessness. It is a precise philosophical claim. "Computers don't actually do anything," Noë writes. "They don't write, or play; they don't even compute. Which doesn't mean we can't play with computers, or use them to invent, or make, or problem-solve." The distinction is between the tool and the user. A clock keeps time, but it does not know what time it is. Watson played Jeopardy!, but it answered no questions — we used it to answer questions. The achievement is human. The sophistication belongs to the tool's designers, not to the tool.

This framing cuts directly against the collaborative language that pervades The Orange Pill's account of writing with Claude. The book describes moments when "something happened in that exchange that neither of us predicted," moments when insight seemed to belong not to the human or the machine but to "the collaboration, to the space between us." Noë would not deny that the interaction produced something valuable. What he would deny is that the "space between" is symmetrical. On one side is an embodied consciousness — a father, a builder, a person who lies awake worrying about his children's future, a person with decades of accumulated experience felt in the body. On the other side is a pattern-matching system of extraordinary sophistication, trained on the residue of human experience but possessing none of it. The collaboration is real in the way that a pianist's collaboration with a Steinway is real: the instrument extends the musician's capabilities, but the music comes from the musician. The piano does not compose. The piano does not care about the melody. The piano makes available a range of sonic possibilities that the pianist's embodied skill converts into music. Claude does something analogous for language — and the analogy is important precisely because it clarifies, rather than obscures, what each partner contributes.

The stakes of this clarification are not academic. If consciousness is computation, then the response to AI is primarily instrumental — use the tool wisely, build the right safeguards, maintain human oversight. If consciousness is embodied engagement, then the response must include something deeper: a commitment to protecting and cultivating the conditions of embodied engagement itself. Not as one priority among many, but as the condition on which all other priorities depend. Judgment, creativity, care, the capacity to ask genuine questions — all of these depend on embodiment. They depend on having a body that is oriented in a world, vulnerable to consequences, sustained in engagement over time. These are not features that can be simulated by a system that processes text about judgment, creativity, and care. They are activities that require the specific, material, biological conditions of being alive.

Noë's challenge is not a refusal of the tools. It is a demand for philosophical clarity about what the tools are and what they are not. The demand is urgent because the culture is moving fast — faster, as Segal persuasively documents, than at any previous technological transition — and clarity about fundamentals is exactly what tends to be sacrificed when speed becomes the dominant value. The question is not whether AI will transform work, education, and creative practice. It will. The question is whether we will understand the transformation clearly enough to preserve what matters most about human cognition even as the tools that augment it grow ever more powerful. And what matters most, on the enactive view, is not computational capacity. It is embodied engagement with a world that resists, surprises, and rewards attention. Lose that, and you lose the ground on which everything else stands.

"To think is to resist — something no machine does." Noë posted this sentence on X alongside his Aeon essay, and it condenses his entire philosophical position into eight words. Resistance is not an obstacle to thought. It is constitutive of thought. The friction of the world against the organism, the pushback of reality against expectation, the bodily experience of encountering something that does not conform to one's model — this is the medium in which genuine thinking develops. A system that processes data frictionlessly, that encounters no resistance because it inhabits no world, that cannot be surprised because surprise requires expectations that arise from embodied engagement — such a system does not think, regardless of the fluency of its outputs. It computes. And computation, for all its power, is not the same thing as thought.

The difference between these two claims — that computation approximates thought and that computation is categorically distinct from thought — is the difference on which this entire book turns.

Chapter 2: The Body's Knowledge

There is a kind of knowledge that cannot be written down. Not because it is mystical or ineffable in some romantic sense, but because it lives in the body — in the hands, the posture, the rhythm of engagement with resistant material — and the body's knowledge does not translate into propositions without losing what makes it knowledge in the first place. This is the philosophical insight that Alva Noë has spent decades developing, and it takes on new urgency when the tools reshaping human work are tools that systematically bypass the body's participation in cognitive processes.

Gilbert Ryle drew the foundational distinction in 1949 between knowing that and knowing how. Knowing that Paris is the capital of France is propositional knowledge — it can be stated, communicated, stored, and transferred without loss. Knowing how to ride a bicycle is practical knowledge — it can only be exercised, not stated, and it resists communication in language. You cannot learn to ride a bicycle by reading a manual. The manual can describe the physics of balance, the mechanics of steering, the optimal cadence of pedaling. None of this gets you onto the bicycle. What gets you onto the bicycle is the body's slow, often painful process of learning to coordinate muscles, perceive balance, and respond to the felt resistance of gravity and momentum. The knowledge that emerges from this process is not a set of propositions about cycling. It is a bodily capacity, a skill, a way of being in relation to the bicycle and the ground that cannot be abstracted from the body that possesses it.

Noë extends Ryle's insight in a direction that Ryle himself did not fully pursue. For Noë, knowing how is not merely a different category of knowledge running alongside knowing that. It is the more fundamental form — the ground from which propositional knowledge itself emerges. The infant does not first form a theory about gravity and then learn to navigate a world of falling objects. The infant develops practical mastery of reaching, grasping, dropping, and catching, and whatever understanding of gravity the infant later develops emerges from this practical mastery. The body knows first. The mind articulates later. And the articulation is always dependent on, always parasitic upon, the bodily knowledge that precedes it.

This developmental priority has profound consequences when the tools that reshape cognitive work are tools that remove the body from the cognitive process. Consider what The Orange Pill describes happening in Trivandrum, where twenty engineers spent a week learning to build with Claude Code. The book reports a twenty-fold productivity multiplier — each engineer producing output that would previously have required an entire team. One engineer, a woman who had spent eight years exclusively on backend systems, built a complete user-facing feature in two days. She had never written frontend code. Claude handled the implementation. The output was real, functional, deployable.

But what did she learn? This is the question that Noë's framework forces, and it is a question that productivity metrics cannot answer. She learned that she could produce frontend output. She did not learn frontend development — the embodied understanding of how interfaces behave, the practical knowledge of what makes a user interaction feel right or wrong, the bodily intuition that comes from years of building interfaces and watching people use them and feeling, in one's own engagement with the material, where the friction is productive and where it is merely obstructive. She acquired the output without undergoing the process. And the process, from the enactive perspective, is not merely the means to the output. It is the medium through which a different kind of outcome — embodied understanding — is achieved.

The geological metaphor that The Orange Pill uses to describe this is one of the book's most philosophically precise moments. Every hour spent debugging, the book suggests, deposits a thin layer of understanding. The layers accumulate over months and years into something solid, something the practitioner can stand on. When a senior engineer looks at a codebase and feels that something is wrong before she can articulate what, she is standing on thousands of those layers, each deposited through friction, through the specific resistance of a system that did not do what she expected.

Noë would not want to leave this at the level of metaphor. The deposits are real. They are patterns of sensorimotor engagement that the body has internalized through repeated interaction with resistant material. The senior engineer's architectural intuition is not stored as a set of propositions in her prefrontal cortex. It is distributed across her entire cognitive-bodily system — in the way her eyes scan code, in the rhythm of her keystrokes, in the postural configuration she assumes when she is concentrating, in the felt sense of rightness or wrongness that arises not from analysis but from the accumulated experience of thousands of encounters with systems that worked and systems that broke. This is knowledge in the body. And it is this knowledge that Claude skips.

The distinction between having the output and having the skill is not a distinction between a better and a worse version of the same thing. It is a distinction between two different things entirely. Consider the difference between reading a recipe and cooking a meal. The recipe is propositional: a sequence of instructions transferable from one mind to another without loss. The cooking is practical: the feel of dough under your hands, the sound of onions when the oil is at the right temperature, the judgment about reduction that comes not from measuring but from looking, smelling, tasting. A person who has read a thousand recipes but never cooked possesses extensive propositional knowledge about cooking and absolutely no practical knowledge of it. And it is the practical knowledge — the bodily know-how — that determines what happens when the recipe fails, when the ingredients are not quite right, when the situation demands improvisation rather than execution.

This maps directly onto the situation The Orange Pill documents in the software industry. A developer who produces code through Claude and a developer who produces code through hours of manual effort may generate functionally identical outputs. The code works or it does not. The system runs or it does not. But the two developers are not in the same epistemic position. The manual developer has deposited another layer of embodied understanding. The Claude-assisted developer has not. And over time, across hundreds of such interactions, the accumulated difference becomes the difference between a practitioner with deep judgment and a practitioner with shallow competence — between someone who can handle the situation the model did not anticipate and someone who can only handle the situations the model was trained on.

The neuroscience of embodied cognition supports this analysis with growing empirical force. Research on motor cognition has demonstrated that motor areas of the brain activate during purely perceptual tasks — that the motor cortex engages when subjects observe manipulable objects even when no action is required. Mirror neuron research suggests that perception and action are not separate cognitive modules but integrated aspects of a single sensorimotor system. Studies on embodied cognition have shown that bodily states influence cognitive processes in ways the computational model struggles to accommodate: the physical act of smiling can influence the evaluation of stimuli; the heaviness of a clipboard can influence the perceived seriousness of a document; the warmth of a cup of coffee can influence the assessment of a stranger's personality. These are not quirky side effects of an otherwise disembodied cognitive system. They are evidence that cognition is constitutively embodied — that the body's states and capacities are not mere inputs to a cognitive computer but constitutive elements of the cognitive process itself.

A system that lacks a body cannot cognize in this full sense, regardless of the sophistication of its information processing. The missing body is not a missing input that could be simulated by providing the right data. The missing body is a missing constitutive element, and its absence fundamentally alters the nature of what the system does. This is why Noë, along with Mariel Goddu and Evan Thompson, argued in Trends in Cognitive Sciences that "LLMs don't know anything." The claim is deliberately provocative, but it is also precise. LLMs produce outputs consistent with the distributional patterns of their training data. They do not know anything in the sense that knowing requires — the sense that involves an embodied organism that has engaged with a world, that has built practical understanding through the friction of that engagement, that can deploy its understanding in novel situations because the understanding is grounded in bodily experience rather than in statistical regularities.

The paper identified two specific grounds for resistance to claims of LLM knowledge. First, such claims cast LLMs as agents rather than as models — treating them as entities that know rather than as tools that pattern-match. Second, they suggest that causal understanding could be acquired from the capacity for mere prediction. But prediction is not understanding. A weather model predicts rain with remarkable accuracy. It does not understand rain — does not know what it feels like to be caught in a downpour, does not grasp the causal processes that produce precipitation in the way that a meteorologist who has spent decades studying those processes understands them through accumulated, embodied engagement with the phenomena.

The Orange Pill wrestles with this territory when it describes the author's realization that Claude's prose had "outrun the thinking" — that the output sounded like insight but the author could not tell whether he actually believed the argument or merely liked how it sounded. This is a precise description of what happens when the body is removed from the thinking process. The body provides signals — felt rightness or wrongness, somatic markers of conviction or doubt — that are the organism's own feedback system for distinguishing genuine understanding from mere fluency. When the output arrives pre-polished, without passing through the body's evaluative process, those signals are absent. The thinker is left with text that reads well and no embodied basis for determining whether it is true.

The prescription that follows from this analysis is not to abandon the tools. Noë has been invited to speak at OpenAI; he is not a philosopher who refuses to engage with the technology. The prescription is to ensure that the tools are accompanied by practices that preserve the body's participation in cognitive work. The medical profession faced an analogous challenge when laparoscopic surgery reduced the surgeon's tactile engagement with the patient's body. The response was not to abandon laparoscopic surgery but to develop simulation-based training that maintained the development of embodied skills even in an era of less invasive procedures. The music world continues to insist on live performance and physical practice even in an era of digital production. These are not nostalgic gestures. They are institutional recognitions that practical knowledge must be cultivated through the body, and that tools which bypass the body must be supplemented by practices that restore it.

The question for the AI age is whether the culture of technology will develop analogous practices — institutional structures and norms that protect embodied engagement as the foundation of expertise — or whether the seductive efficiency of AI-produced outputs will gradually eliminate the bodily participation on which genuine understanding depends. The output will continue to be excellent. The code will work. The briefs will be competent. The essays will be articulate. But the knowledge behind the output — the embodied, practical, bodily knowledge that enables judgment, improvisation, and the capacity to handle what the training data did not anticipate — may be quietly eroding, invisible behind the screen of functional equivalence, measurable only in the moment when the situation demands something the model cannot provide and the human has nothing in the body to fall back on.

Chapter 3: World, Not Data

An organism does not exist in an environment. An organism enacts a world. The distinction sounds like jargon, but it carries the full weight of everything Alva Noë has argued about consciousness, and its implications for understanding what artificial intelligence actually does — and does not do — are devastating to the casual equation of processing with understanding.

The concept of world-enactment draws on a philosophical lineage stretching from Jakob von Uexküll's concept of the Umwelt — the species-specific perceptual world each organism inhabits — through Heidegger's analysis of being-in-the-world, to the enactivist synthesis developed by Francisco Varela, Evan Thompson, and Eleanor Rosch. At each stage, the insight is the same: the world that matters for an organism is not the objective world described by physics but the meaningful world constituted by the organism's capacities for perception and action. A tick's Umwelt consists of butyric acid, warmth, and hair — the three sensory dimensions relevant to its survival. The tick does not perceive the color of the leaf it sits on, the sounds of the forest, the temperature fluctuations of the season. Not because it lacks sophisticated sensory equipment, but because those features are not part of its world. A human being walking through a room does not perceive a collection of physical objects arrayed in Cartesian space. She perceives affordances — possibilities for action constituted by the relationship between her body's capacities and the features of the environment. The chair affords sitting. The doorway affords passage. The coffee cup affords grasping. These affordances are relational properties, constituted by the meeting of a particular body with a particular arrangement of the world. The chair does not afford sitting for a creature that cannot sit.

AI does not enact a world. It processes data about worlds enacted by others.

This claim requires careful unpacking, because it is the hinge on which the entire enactive critique of AI turns. A large language model's training set is an extraordinary artifact — a compressed archive of human linguistic production representing an enormous quantity of texts produced by embodied organisms in the course of their engaged encounters with meaningful worlds. Scientific papers recording discoveries made through years of laboratory work. Love poems written from the felt experience of longing. Code produced through the back-and-forth struggle between a programmer's intentions and a system's resistance. Legal briefs drafted by lawyers who sat across from clients and heard their voices crack. Each text in the training set is a residue of embodied engagement — a trace left behind by an organism that was alive, situated, vulnerable, and engaged.

Consider an analogy that makes the point visceral. A seismograph produces a record of an earthquake: a tracing that encodes the amplitude, frequency, and duration of the earth's movement. This record is enormously useful. But the record is not the earthquake. An AI trained on every seismographic record in history could produce synthetic tracings statistically indistinguishable from real ones. It could predict with remarkable accuracy what future seismographic records will look like. But it would not know what it is like to be in an earthquake — the ground shaking beneath your feet, objects falling from shelves, the visceral terror that arises from the earth betraying its promise of solidity. The experience is not in the data. It is in the embodied organism that lived through the earthquake and, as a byproduct of that living, produced the data.

When The Orange Pill describes the collaboration between its author and Claude as producing insights that "belong to the collaboration, to the space between us," Noë's framework reveals an asymmetry that the language of collaboration tends to obscure. On one side of that space is an embodied consciousness — a person with a history, with children he worries about, with decades of building and breaking and rebuilding that have deposited layers of practical understanding in his body. He lies awake at night. He feels vertigo. His hands have shaped things. On the other side is a system trained on the residue of billions of such lives but possessing none of them. Morris, applying Noë's framework from The Entanglement directly to AI, captured this asymmetry with an image that is worth dwelling on: "A robot can't make coffee because a robot can't taste coffee." The observation is not about the difficulty of building coffee-making robots, which already exist. It is about the nature of the activity called "making coffee" when that activity is performed by an organism for whom coffee matters — an organism that adjusts the grind because the last cup was bitter, that heats the milk to the temperature it prefers, that times the extraction based on a felt sense of when the coffee is ready. The robot executes an algorithm. The person enacts a world in which coffee has taste, preference has weight, and the morning ritual has meaning constituted by the body's engagement with the activity over years of practice.

Noë's 2023 book The Entanglement develops this insight systematically, identifying four dimensions of entanglement that constitute the difference between genuine cognitive activity and its computational simulation. The first is entanglement by body: cognition is inseparable from the specific body that performs it, with its particular sensory capacities, motor skills, and history of physical engagement. It is that a culture dazzled by the impressive outputs of pattern-matching systems will gradually lose sight of the conditions that make genuine cognition possible: the embodied engagement of living organisms with worlds that matter to them. And in losing sight of those conditions, the culture will fail to protect them — not through malice but through the slow, seductive substitution of processing for engagement, of data for world, of the residue of experience for experience itself.

An AI trained on every love poem ever written does not know what it is like to love. An AI trained on every medical text ever published does not know what it is like to be ill. An AI trained on every codebase in the history of software does not know what it is like to debug — the frustration, the false starts, the moment when the problem suddenly reorganizes itself in your perception and you see, with the felt certainty of embodied understanding, what went wrong. The words are correct. The understanding is absent. And the distance between correct words and genuine understanding is the distance between data and world — a distance that no amount of computation can cross because computation, however sophisticated, remains on the data side of the divide.

Chapter 4: Strange Tools for the AI Age

Alva Noë's concept of "strange tools" provides a framework for understanding something that the current discourse about artificial intelligence badly needs but almost entirely lacks: a way of making visible the hidden assumptions that organize our relationship to the technology, so that those assumptions can be examined, questioned, and — where necessary — reorganized.

The concept, developed in Noë's 2015 book Strange Tools: Art and Human Nature, begins with a deceptively simple observation about tools and the way they shape experience. An ordinary tool organizes engagement with the world. A hammer organizes the capacity to drive nails. A language organizes the capacity to communicate. A software interface organizes the capacity to interact with digital systems. The large language model makes fluent text production easy and the slow, painful, productive struggle of thinking-through-writing harder to justify when the output arrives pre-polished. When the reader encounters Han's analysis of Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog as an expression of the smoothness aesthetic, or the description of the iPhone as a slab of glass so featureless it could have been grown rather than made, the familiar technology is suddenly visible in a new way. It takes the experience of human-AI collaboration and defamiliarizes it by exposing its failure modes. The Deleuze passage that sounded like insight but broke under examination. These are strange tools because they do not merely employ AI or refuse it. They reflect on it. They take the increasingly habitual, increasingly invisible experience of working with AI and make it available for the kind of critical examination that habitual use forecloses. And this critical examination is not a luxury. It is a necessity — the cognitive equivalent of the beaver's daily inspection of the dam, checking for the gaps and weaknesses that the river's constant pressure will exploit.

Noë's philosophical interest in strange tools connects to his broader concern with the conditions of conscious experience. If consciousness is an activity of the whole organism in its ongoing engagement with an environment, then the technologies that organize that engagement are not merely instrumental. They are constitutive of the form that consciousness takes. The tools shape how we perceive, attend, think, and experience being alive. When those tools change, consciousness changes — not in its essential nature, which remains embodied and enactive, but in its concrete form, the specific patterns of attention and action through which embodied engagement is realized.

This is why the creation of strange tools is not an intellectual exercise but a practical imperative. Without practices that make the organizing function of AI visible, the technology operates unchecked, below the threshold of awareness, shaping consciousness in ways that accumulate gradually and become apparent only when the transformation is advanced. The strange tool is the instrument of a specific vigilance: the vigilance of a culture that refuses to let its technologies operate in the dark, that insists on understanding how its tools shape its experience, that maintains the capacity for critical reflection even as the tools become more powerful and more seductive.

The Orange Pill's deepest contribution — the thing it does that most AI commentary does not — is precisely this strange-tool function. It is a book written with AI that examines what it means to write with AI. It celebrates the tools while confessing their dangers. It performs the recursion that strange tools require: the turning of the instrument back upon itself, the making-visible of what the instrument ordinarily conceals. Byung-Chul Han tends a garden in Berlin and listens to music only in analog, where the resistance between the sound and his attention cannot be eliminated. Alva Noë chairs a philosophy department at Berkeley and has been invited to speak at OpenAI. The two thinkers occupy different positions in the cultural landscape — Han refusing engagement with the tools, Noë engaging critically from inside the conversation — but their diagnoses converge on a single point that neither could reach alone. Han identifies the pathology. Noë identifies the mechanism. Together they produce an account of what the removal of friction from cognitive work actually costs, an account more powerful than either thinker provides independently.

Han's critique of the "aesthetics of the smooth," which The Orange Pill engages across several chapters with genuine seriousness, identifies a cultural condition: the progressive elimination of resistance, texture, and friction from the surfaces of contemporary life. The iPhone's featureless glass. The one-click purchase. The algorithmic feed calibrated to eliminate surprise. The seamless interface designed so that the user never encounters anything that disrupts the flow of engagement. Han sees in this smoothness not a neutral design preference but a cultural ideology — the aesthetic expression of a society that has made optimization its highest value and friction its enemy.

The Orange Pill takes Han seriously enough to feel the weight of the diagnosis before mounting its counter-argument. The book describes the developer's experience of building understanding through struggle, the geological metaphor of layers deposited through friction, the risk that AI tools will produce practitioners who have the surface of expertise without its depth. This is honest and important. But the book's treatment of Han, for all its seriousness, does not follow the diagnosis to its philosophical root. It treats the loss as primarily experiential — a thinner, less satisfying way of working — rather than as epistemological. Noë supplies what Han's cultural criticism and The Orange Pill's honest phenomenology both gesture toward but neither fully articulates: an account of why smoothness is pathological, grounded not in aesthetic preference or cultural commentary but in the philosophy of embodied cognition.

The reason smoothness is pathological is that it undermines the conditions of embodied engagement on which understanding depends. This is not a claim about preferences. But the writer has not found anything, because finding requires searching, and searching requires the embodied engagement of an organism with resistant material. The writer reviews the output — judges it, edits it, approves or rejects it. But reviewing is a different cognitive activity from producing. It engages a different set of capacities. It does not deposit the same layers of understanding that the struggle of production deposits. The smoothness of the output conceals the absence of the process, and the absence of the process means the absence of the specific kind of knowledge that only process can produce.

Han diagnoses this at the level of cultural symptom. He sees the smooth surface as the expression of an achievement society that has internalized the demand for constant optimization, that treats every friction as a cost and every removal of friction as a gain. His analysis of auto-exploitation — the way the contemporary subject cracks the whip against her own back, converting every moment of potential rest into another opportunity for productivity — resonates with The Orange Pill's honest confessions about the inability to stop working with Claude, the compulsive quality of productive engagement with a tool that never says no and never gets tired.

But Han does not explain why this is damaging to cognition rather than merely to well-being. His framework operates at the level of political philosophy and cultural theory. He can show that the smooth society produces burnout, exhaustion, the erosion of the capacity for genuine rest. What he cannot show, because his philosophical tools are not designed for the job, is that the smooth society also produces epistemic damage — damage to the quality of understanding itself, independent of its effects on health or happiness.

Noë's enactivism supplies the missing explanation. If understanding is constituted by embodied engagement — if the deepest knowledge lives in the body's skilled interaction with resistant material — then the removal of resistance is the removal of the condition under which understanding develops. The smooth interface does not merely make work more pleasant or more efficient. It alters the epistemological structure of the activity. It replaces an activity in which understanding is built through bodily engagement with an activity in which output is generated through delegation. The two activities may produce identical products. They do not produce identical practitioners.

The comparison with laparoscopic surgery, which The Orange Pill deploys as the pivotal example in its counter-argument, is illuminating from this combined Han-Noë perspective. The book argues, correctly, that removing the tactile friction of open surgery relocated friction rather than eliminating it. The laparoscopic surgeon faces different challenges — interpreting two-dimensional images of three-dimensional spaces, coordinating instruments she cannot directly feel, operating at a cognitive remove from the patient's body. The friction ascended. The new difficulties are real.

But what the ascending friction thesis does not fully account for is that the new friction is of a different kind. The ascending friction thesis treats these as equivalent because both are difficult. Noë's framework reveals that they are not equivalent, because they engage the body differently. Both are genuine skills. They are not the same skill. It has changed in kind. The new friction is more abstract — questions of architecture, design, product judgment. Both are real difficulties. But the new friction does not develop the same embodied knowledge that the old friction developed. The practitioner freed from implementation friction gains something: time, scope, the capacity to work at a higher level of abstraction. She also loses something: the specific bodily knowledge that can only be built through implementation struggle. And the loss is invisible because the output — the working code, the shipped product — does not reflect it.

The invisibility is the most dangerous feature of the smoothness problem. Han recognized this: the smooth does not announce itself as a loss. It announces itself as a gain. The frictionless interface feels like progress. The instant output feels like capability. The seamless experience feels like what technology is supposed to provide. And because the loss is invisible — because the erosion of embodied knowledge does not show up in the code or the product or the quarterly metrics — it compounds silently. Each frictionless interaction reinforces the expectation of frictionlessness. Each time output is accepted without the embodied struggle that would have built understanding, the capacity for that struggle atrophies slightly. The tolerance for friction diminishes. And with it diminishes the capacity for the specific kind of thinking that only friction produces — the slow, embodied, resistant thinking through which genuine understanding is built.

The Orange Pill describes this erosion with honesty — the developer who lost "ten minutes" of formative struggle buried in four hours of plumbing, the author who could not tell whether his thinking or merely his prose had been improved by the collaboration. These are precise observations of the smoothness problem operating in real time. Noë's contribution is to explain why these observations matter beyond the level of personal experience. The erosion is not merely a change in the quality of work life. It is a change in the epistemological conditions under which expertise develops. And expertise — the deep, embodied, judgment-grounding kind of expertise that The Orange Pill correctly identifies as the most valuable human contribution in the age of AI — depends on the very friction that the tools are designed to eliminate.

The synthesis, then, is this. Han sees the cultural condition: a society that has made smoothness its aesthetic ideal and friction its enemy. Noë sees the epistemological mechanism: the body's engagement with resistant material as the medium through which deep understanding develops. Together, they produce a diagnosis that is more precise than either could produce alone. The smoothness that Han identifies as culturally pathological is epistemologically pathological because it removes the embodied engagement that Noë identifies as the condition of genuine knowledge. The achievement society's war on friction is, at the deepest level, a war on the conditions of understanding — waged not through prohibition but through seduction, not through the removal of liberty but through the removal of resistance, not through the demand that you stop thinking but through the provision of tools that think for you so smoothly that you do not notice the thinking has stopped.

The question that remains is whether this diagnosis forecloses the use of AI tools or merely constrains it. Noë, who has spoken at OpenAI, is not a philosopher of refusal.
