There is a moment when you realize that the tools you've built your career mastering are not just changing—they're being fundamentally rewritten. I felt it in February 2026, watching twenty engineers in Trivandrum transform their capabilities in a single week. I felt it again when I wrote most of this book on a ten-hour flight, collaborating with Claude in ways that would have been impossible months earlier.

That moment changes you. It forces questions you weren't prepared to ask.

But there's another kind of questioning happening right now—one that goes deeper than "Will AI replace my job?" or "How do I prompt better?" The questions that keep me awake are about risk itself. About how we decide what's dangerous. About who gets to make those decisions, and what assumptions shape them before we even notice we're making them.

This is why Aaron Wildavsky matters right now.

Wildavsky spent thirty years studying how societies decide what to fear. Not what they should fear—what they actually do fear, and why those fears cluster into predictable patterns. He discovered that risk perception isn't objective. It's cultural. An egalitarian and an individualist, looking at the exact same AI system, will see completely different dangers and propose completely different solutions.

I'm writing this because I've been building in this space long enough to see the pattern Wildavsky identified playing out in real time. The precautionary voices demanding we regulate first and innovate later. The accelerationist voices insisting the market will sort everything out. The institutional voices trying to preserve existing credentialing systems. The resigned voices saying none of it matters anyway.

All of them responding to the same technology. None of them seeing the same risks.

This book takes Wildavsky's framework—his "cultural theory of risk"—and applies it to the AI transition we're all living through. It's not another book about whether AI is good or bad. It's a book about why we can't agree on what AI even means, and what that disagreement costs us.

Aaron Wildavsky (1930–1993) was an American political scientist who revolutionized the study of risk perception, public policy, and political culture. Born in New York City and educated at Brooklyn College and Yale University, Wildavsky spent most of his career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as Professor of Political Science and Public Policy from 1962 until his death.

Wildavsky's most enduring contribution was "cultural theory," developed with anthropologist Mary Douglas, which argued that risk perception is not objective but culturally constructed. The question of professional identity is inseparable from the question of tool use. The engineer who defines herself through her capacity to write elegant code faces an identity challenge when the machine writes code that is, by most measurable criteria, equally elegant. The designer who defines herself through her aesthetic judgment faces a different but related challenge when the machine produces designs that satisfy the client without requiring the designer's intervention. The writer who defines himself through his distinctive voice faces the most intimate challenge of all when the machine produces prose that approximates his voice with uncanny accuracy. In each case, the tool does not merely change what the professional does. It challenges who the professional is, and the challenge operates at a level of identity that most professional training does not prepare the individual to address. The response to this challenge is not uniform. Some professionals find liberation in the release from mechanical tasks that obscured the judgment and vision they had always considered central to their work. Others experience loss -- the dissolution of a professional self that was built through decades of practice and that cannot be rebuilt on the new ground without a period of disorientation that few organizations have learned to support.

It is determined by the quality of the questions we bring to the encounter, the depth of the values we bring to the practice, and the strength of the institutions we build to channel the current toward conditions that sustain rather than diminish the capacities that make us most fully human. The question of what to do with that power is, and has always been, a human question -- one that requires not merely technical competence but moral seriousness, institutional imagination, and the willingness to hold complexity without collapsing it into premature resolution. We must also reckon with what I would call the distribution problem. The benefits and costs of the AI transition are not distributed evenly across the population of affected workers. Those with strong institutional support, economic security, and access to mentoring and training will navigate the transition more effectively than those who lack these resources.
